AM - 8 miles, horsepark loops. Lots of dogs out this morning.

PM - 9 miles at Alta w/ Rob, Kevin, Fritz, and the XC kids. Awesome night up there (as always)!

I've been thinking a bit about the second half of the year. Looks like Andrea and I will probably run the Big Sur 1/2 in November, and possibly the RnR Vegas 1/2 in December. If that plan pans out, those two will be my focus races (Big Sur is very competitive, and Vegas is a PR-type course... I really want another crack at 1:05), but they are a long way off. In the shorter term I'm planning to run the TOU half and marathon, but at this point I don't see myself putting in another "big" (10-12 week) training cycle / buildup for those two races... even for the marathon. I'm gonna sort of wing it. I got right back into workouts a few weeks after Boston, and while the results were pretty good in May/June, and the fire to start hitting the tempos and intervals is already burning again, I need to be objective enough to realize that I'm playing a somewhat dangerous game if I keep pressing forward with the harder efforts. Especially since I haven't taken any true "down" time in the past six months. So no structured workouts for the next month or maybe even longer... I won't rule out jumping in a low key race (Tour de Run?) if I start getting antsy, but that's it. Its very tempting to continue to keep rolling along when you're running well, but if I had a coach - the first thing they would tell me to do right now is back off for a while. No one has a linear improvement curve (in the long-term) so I'd rather shut down the intensity on my own terms, rather than risk getting stale or injured in the future. Plus, its summer, and while I really do enjoy enjoy the rigors of harder training, right now I want to keep things 100% fun and have the flexibility to do whatever comes up and seems cool. That being said, a lot of the things I think are fun/cool end up being hard, anyways :-)

Smart, great plan. I'll be up at TOU half. Never ran it before- but it looks fun.

From prestonmadera on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 09:30:51 from 67.182.220.96

Good plan, now stick to it!

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 09:31:20 from 155.100.226.54

Obviously I've only run it once, but I really like it. The course isn't a gimme - if you want to run fast, you gotta really work hard, even on the downhill part in the canyon.

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 09:32:39 from 155.100.226.54

That's why I'm writing it down and making it public, Preston - I'm more likely to stick to what I know is the right thing to do :-)

Makes total sense, especially after the monster miles you logged leading up to Boston. You've got a huge base laid that you can build on in a relatively short time. I think you're right to 'tick over' and re-charge: no point getting injured. Improvement's about good planning and commonsense - you're employing commonsense to plan to improve.

From Andrea on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 09:43:29 from 72.37.244.100

Fun/cool for you ALWAYS involves lots of exercise!

From Nate on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 11:29:03 from 128.205.83.217

You raced A LOT thing spring, I think a very low-key/fun summer is a good idea. I like the idea of two seasons of racing (it's probably a HS XC/T&F carry-over). The spring racing season is nice because you can visualize rapid gains after a lazy winter. Do low-key stuff in the summer, which for me, is a period of flatter gains and then bust out a nice fall season with some good races

Always fun and exciting to hear your plans Jake! I agree that just having fun for the month of July is an awesome plan. You are fit enough that if you decide to jump in on a race you are still going to do awesome and maybe even surprise yourself.

Do not run Vegas RnR!! Wow what a disaster that was last year. I mean hopefully they get the logistics figured out but wow I would never support any RnR event ever again after that experience.

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 12:45:26 from 155.100.226.54

They've changed the courses for this year. Honestly I would never do it if I had to pay the entry fees. But if they cover that and a hotel, its actually a great race up front. Last year 9 guys broke 1:05 and a couple more were in the low 1:05s.

From Rachelle on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 12:57:53 from 199.190.170.31

Yeah if someone paid my entry and hotel I would go in a heart beat. You should probably consider bringing your biggest fan along for the trip......

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 13:00:11 from 155.100.226.54

and even though they use poison toxic garbage water, that's ok in a half-marathon b/c you don't really need it anyways :-)

Can't wait to be able to join in on those Alta runs! Looking forward to seeing what your "downtime" looks like :)

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 16:18:09 from 155.100.226.54

The past week was a good example of what downtime looks like - climb mountains, bike a little, and only run about 100 miles. The only think I'll change is the wearing of pants on the weekends... that was a one-time thing for the Smoore wedding. Not doing that again anytime soon... my formal wear from now on is flag shorts :-)

From Bonnie on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 16:37:50 from 128.196.228.134

whoohoo, you will LOVE big sur! If I weren't running a 50K in October I would be so all over that race ;-)

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 16:44:45 from 155.100.226.54

When you and Dean told me it was a "racer's" race - I was 100% in!

From Bonnie on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 16:48:47 from 128.196.228.134

ha! I knew you would like that! It is such a great race ...

From Hamdog Alum on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 18:46:00 from 71.90.5.18

Sounds like a great choice! I'm doing the same. I was going to run a bunch of track races this summer, but I realized I needed a mental break from running hard. So now I'm just enjoying my easy running. No splits, no worry of miles, just logging time on feet at comfortable paces. Whatever the body wants to do. I too will probably need to jump into low-key races to satisfy my hyperactivity disorders :)

From DaleG on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 21:13:54 from 152.216.11.5

Jake, I love your outlook on things. You are/will be playing it smart and you will have fun doing it. I love it!!!

As for running at Alta, I wish I lived closer so I could join you. That would be so much fun.

From Cam on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 21:48:12 from 75.148.53.133

solid plan. You have a really good shot at winning rnr Vegas too. Are you worried at all about the horror stories from last year, or a half at night? ( if they do that again)

From Jake K on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 22:00:32 from 67.177.11.154

The winner of Vegas ran like 1:03 last year! None of the problems were problems for the elites up front and a handful of guys qualified for the trials... it was actually a really good race. The issues were when the masses of 1/2 runner intersected w/ the masses of full marathon runners. They did a terrible job planning the routes... it was obvious it was going to be a total disaster from the start. This year's new maps look like it could actually work. Luckily I'll be finished and showered by the time the whole thing implodes again. :-)

From Steve on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 10:29:55 from 66.87.131.26

Sounds to me like some trail running time. How about a shot at the Mt Whitney FKT? 22 mile trail, last three miles above 13,600. Easy run, low stress.

From Jake K on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 10:37:56 from 155.100.226.54

You gonna fly me out there Steve? :-)

Have you ever done Whitney? The switchbacks are never-ending, there are like 90-something of them. Its awesome scenery though. One of the highlights of my entire life is getting up to its summit in the dark and watching the sunrise from the top of the continental USA. I am not ashamed to admit that I head tears in my eyes, it was so incredible.

What about this Teton loop? That's the one I really want to do the most. I was telling Rob about it last night and he seemed interested too...

From Steve on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 22:15:15 from 64.134.165.104

Never done it. I can probably get to it on an overnight though. Is it on your blog? I agree, the Teton loop sounds the best. BTW, the FKT on that 22 mile trail is 3:10. Amazing time. It has stood for 7 years I think.

From Jake K on Fri, Jun 29, 2012 at 08:26:52 from 155.100.226.54

Yep its on there Steve (in the archives from 2010). We climbed Whitney at the end of the John Muir Trail... so we took the LONG (211 mile) route to the top!
