AM - 13 miles. Warmed up 2 miles, 10 mile tempo run in 54:29 (5:27/mi avg), 1 mile cooldown w/ Andrea. Back to the old "home" tempo loop - haven't done any workouts there since around Memorial Day! The goal was ~55 minutes and stay very relaxed. This is slower than I did a lot of tempos in the spring, but that was my plan. CIM is almost 4 months away - I don't need to be running at goal marathon pace right now. Cranking out 5:15 pace runs looks good on paper, but I'm not sure it would really be of any benefit at this point. In fact it would probably be counter-productive. As I was telling some of the guys on the last long run, I want to come into the TOU Marathon feeling like my fitness is at about 85% - in good aerobic shape, but also leaving plenty of room for improvement between TOU and CIM. I don't want to feel "peaked" in September and then just be hanging on the rest of the year. Hopefully a little patience now will go a long way.

Splits - 5:38, 5:37, 5:29, 5:24, 5:25, 5:22, 5:19, 5:23, 5:25, 5:26
. Miles 6 & 7 got a little quicker, so rather than keep dropping it down and hammering 5:05s to finish it out, I backed off. It actually felt really good to make the end of the run easier.

Drove up to work to do another major food/clothes re-stocking, and had the pleasure of heckling James on Foothill. Great morning! :-)

PM - 6.5 miles and then went to Andrea's bike race and took some pics. She is the queen of the SLC Corporate Olympics! Wheeler Farm is such a weird place - chickens everywhere!

Great workout this morning!! It sounds like you didn't struggle at all, which is a great sign for TOU. I have a good feeling about it...

I have a feeling that your Utah Marathon winning dry spell will end in Logan. Make room in your back seat for a big Moose trophy. I had Moose envy when Allie was standing next to me with her huge moose and I just had a little moose.

Cruising for 10 miles at 5:30 pace - nice workout. I like how you're approaching TOU and CIM. I think your patience will pay-off, big style.

Jake you are so smart! Awesome workout that accomplished exactly what you were looking for. I am definitely thinking a giant moose may be added to the trophy shelf this fall.

From ACorn on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 09:59:24 from 24.2.76.146

Awesome tempo run! I will trade you my 100% fitness for your 85%.

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 10:30:41 from 155.100.226.54

You never know who will show up at TOU. I think some Africans have come in the past. I'm hoping its competitive and there are some ringers in the field. Maybe Paul will come back :-) That being said, I want the moose!!!

The idea is that these 10 milers will be in the 54s right now, and in the 51s in November. Progression. Nothing to prove in early August.

From Rob on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 10:45:30 from 206.71.84.68

I wonder what the African's did with their Moose?

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 10:47:58 from 155.100.226.54

traded it for a zebra trophy

From Superfly on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 10:49:41 from 74.211.21.81

Looking forward to seeing your marathon PR go down at TOU- even on 85%

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 10:51:32 from 155.100.226.54

That would be nice!

85% race fitness... I think I'll be at ~100% AEROBIC fitness :-) Pretty sure my blood has turned to gel in the past 2 months.

From Paul on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 10:51:47 from 207.224.39.118

I need to run TOU 2 more times to get in the 10-year club...but will have to defer contributing to that accomplishment this year. The moose trophies are cool, but trust me the wad of cash is cooler. Last year they paid on-site with 15 crisp Benjamins. Why can't SLC Marathon keep it so simple?

IMO, 85% training will put you at 95% performance. Beyond that, runners have to do a lot of work to eek out that last 5% (ie - diminishing returns). Anyway, you'll run really well off of "limited" training, especially on the TOU course, which is rather forgiving with the downhill and tailwinds.

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 11:00:19 from 155.100.226.54

95% performance is a lot better than being 99.9% trained and then completely blowing up, like mt last 2 marathons. I'm taking the approach like I did at Utah Valley - huge aerobic base, a couple tune-up races, and no expectations on race day - just go out and run what feels right.

From Paul on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 11:23:29 from 207.224.39.118

Another benefit to 85% training is that when you're ready to train full-bore for a marathon, the cycle can be much shorter. Assuming you're already in pretty good shape, 6 weeks is plenty to ripen up, without getting mentally or physically fatigued. Going much longer can make things kind of stale. There's only so many tempo runs and high mileage weeks that one can do. And the great thing about shorter cycles is that not all eggs are in one basket and blowing up doesn't matter much.

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 11:28:23 from 155.100.226.54

We think alike Paul. That's exactly how I'm looking at the rest of this year. Run TOU off mainly base training, get some more marathon experience, then I'll have some time to recover, 6-7 week harder cycle for CIM. A shorter buildup, but it will probably keep me feeling sharper and fresher.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 15:56:49 from 69.131.141.92

Nice tempo Jake. Interesting about your 85% and getting stale vs. peaking at the right time...man, I've learned more good stuff from FRB and just reading comments like those above than I have from all other sources combined.

Good luck Andrea!

From allie on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 21:06:20 from 174.23.146.24

go andrea!

wheeler farm is the best venue ever. we're actually scheming up a fall 5k on that course. chickens and mud included.

great tempo and heckling. i agree about the shorter build ups. for me personally, 6 weeks + a taper week seems to work well. my des news build up was a bit too long. probably one too many water wheel loops.

From Steve on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 21:29:58 from 66.87.64.121

Nice training Jake! Thanks too for all the articles. I depend on your blog for the latest running news

From Jake K on Thu, Aug 09, 2012 at 09:48:47 from 155.100.226.54

I think a Wheeler Farm XC race would be a great idea for a weekend in the fall. I'd be in for that! Andrea and I agreed that we could both run the loop faster than biking it.
