AM - 12 miles. The original plan for today was a 10-15K progression run. That got changed when winter storm Galdolf came in stronger than expected... all the roads are still covered in snow. Yesterday Rob approached me w/ the idea of running a 2 mile trial at the olympic oval with Kramer Morton, who finished 16th at the Foot Locker National XC Championships last month. I was all-in for that. We had a good crew meet at the oval - Andrea, Matt, Scott, Mike, Toni, Kevin, Collin, and Rob w/ his high school kids. Abby Murphy even joined us!

The oval was very crowded and we realized two things right away: 1) Don't go there at 8am (gotta go at 6am on the weekends if you are doing a faster workout) and 2) The 2-mile time trial wasn't happening due to the congestion. There was some skating event going on and it was a bottleneck on either end of the track. So we had to improvise.

Coach Rob suggested we change the plan to 4 x Mile, so that's what we did.  They were actually 1600s, but w/ all the weaving around, I guarantee every one was well over a mile long. I was going from lane 1 to 4 and back several times on every rep. Kramer and I ran 4:51, 4:50, 4:50, 4:50. I would set the pace and Kramer would hang behind me until 200m to go, when he would even up and it was obvious that he could blow me away with his kick whenever he wanted to. But he was nice and didn't do that. On the last rep, Rob told us to come through 1200m slower and then accelerate on the last 400m. We came through in ~3:46 and I ran 64 for the last lap, with Kramer just ahead of me on that one.

On a day like today, any quality efforts you can put in is a bonus. I wish we had been able to run the duece, because my legs felt ready to really rip it. I feel ready for next weekend, that's for sure. It was fun to run w/ Kramer... I hope I get to do workouts with him more this spring, because he has some incredible speed and can really make me work over shorter distances. The best part of the workout was that Scott was right behind us on every rep. He's back! I also got in trouble for cutting off the zamboni. Whatever!

Andrea took a few pictures...

PM - 8 miles.

Great work Jake. I know Kramer really appreciated it.

See you guys at 2.

Looks like another fun Saturday, way to mix it up. Training Rocky style every day will only get you so far.

Very Cool. Something different but sounds like a lot of fun. Great workout though and I'll be out cheering next week. If you need anything while down here or an extra water bottle or GU let me know.

Nice workout Jake. A cheeky little sharpener. I think the 4x1's, on top of everything else you've done, will stand you in good stead for next weekend. I think it might be a blessing in disguise that you ended up doing that session. Well done Mr Murphy.

Kramer's got some talent - it'll be good to see how he develops. The schoolmaster's done a good job. Kramer looks like, from the pictures, that he's got True Grit. And talking of True Grit - Scott! Unbelievavle.

Great job today Jake! It looked effortless for you. I just stuck with my plan for tempo today, but next time I'll do the repeats with you. They looked like a lot of fun. I just didn't want to chance anything given next weekend.

Nicely done Jake. Sounds like fun.

Rob and Kramer are like Salazar and Rupp out there. I'm not sure how I fit into the group... maybe I'm Ritz, but less injury prone? They've got a great thing going. You can tell just by running alongside Kramer that he can shift to that next "gear" so nicely. His speed is going to be a great weapon for him, because it isn't even fine tuned yet.

Happy you had a guy like Kramer to push you :) Psyched to see what you can do next weekend! Are we going to be able to track you so I can root for you from your own couch?

From scottkeate on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 13:28:12 from 71.199.4.146

Great job today, Jake! It looked like you could have kept running that pace all day long. It sure makes intervals easier when you're being pulled around the track by guys like you and Kramer. Event the crazy weaving we had to do on a crowded track will be a fun memory. Glad Kramer didn't get hurt when he couldn't shoot the gap between the podium in lane one and the slow joggers. You are ready for a great race next weekend.

Jake,

Hi. I always appreciate the pictures you post and the links. I enjoyed the article on Kramer Morton. That guy does a lot of work during the race - and especially the last quarter mile!! I am sure all forty people who went to the Nationals do a lot of work though. Sounds like a nice guy with the shirt and note gesture. Awesome that you get to meet and train with Stars! I was telling Conner the other day that they should do more to publicize what these guys who go to the Nationals are doing - film their races, etc. Be well.

Oh, and by the way. Who is the clydesdale behind you and Kramer in those pictures? :-)

From Conner Mantz on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 17:09:23 from 65.130.231.105

Wow, it'll be exciting to see what he does this coming track season. It'll be fun to race him in the 2 mile.

From Jason D on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 17:55:10 from 24.1.80.94

Nice work with the camera, Andrea. The first one has the Jake and Kramer perfectly matched (arms, legs, point in gait cycle. Oh, and nice job out front fellas :)

Scott: if that is a clydesdale, he sure is moving, especially after being a sick horse.

From Jake K on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 19:01:23 from 67.177.11.154

Conner - I'd love to see you and Kramer race the 2 mile... heck, I'd like to be in that race! :-)

From Michael Finch on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 19:36:01 from 75.169.211.149

Oh! lucky kramer :) haha i'd want to see you race all out against him too!

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Jan 12, 2013 at 19:46:03 from 24.10.249.165

Salazar and Rupp?

You just made me blush!

From SlowJoe on Sun, Jan 13, 2013 at 16:15:43 from 98.201.152.210

Man, cool workout with a great group. That you can feel good at that pace (with the bonus mileage) definitely speaks to your readiness for this next weekend.

Great to run with you again Jake. You looked effortless out there. I can't wait to see how you do on Saturday!
