After a real easy week last week and several days of not running I was ready to get back out there.  It was a nice morning (70) and the humidity was down with some clouds which made for pretty good running weather.  As I started out I was a little stiff from the hiking the last couple of days.  The first couple of miles were very slow but then started to get loosened up and felt real fresh.  I got into a pretty good pace and the miles just seemed to start clicking off.  It never felt difficult the whole time going the extra distance.  I even picked up the pace the last 5 or 6 miles.  This was my longest run since I did my first marathon 3 years ago and it seemed pretty easy.  I think all of the base building has really paid off as I increase the distance on these long runs.

Great run!! Glad it was feeling so easy, your training and base miles are paying off. This is a great training run for Chicago, keep it up and you will definitely get the BQ!

Thanks! Do follow a certain program for your marathon training or do you just do what works for you? I am reading Pfitziner's Advanced Marathoning right now and seems pretty good. I will probably follow this with a few modifications. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't currently follow a program. For my first marathon, I followed on from CoolRunning.com, then for Boston in 2006 I used a 12 week program from Runner's World. Now I just keep my base mileage high, hit a regular long run schedule (longer and more frequent as I get within about 12 weeks of a race) and throw in MP and tempo workouts. I also use the summer for a few shorter faster races.

If Pfitzinger's program looks good to you and it is something you can commit too, go for it. My problem was trying to stay with the program on days where it just wasn't possible, so I have just developed a routine/discipline based on my schedule/time and target race and pace.

Good luck, you are doing great!

Great job on the long run Jim! Speaking of programs I've tried lots of different things but I really think my best results have come with doing exactly what jtshad mentioned.

Jeff, Tom,

Thanks for the feedback and advice. I am still pretty new at this marathon game so the reassurance sure helps. I know what you mean about finding something that fits your schedule that has been the problem that I have been having.
