What can I learn from a totally crappy run?!

1)  I suck in the heat, & no I do not think I will ever acclimate!

2)  I need to drink lots more water throughout the day & night!

3)  It is seriously time to consider moving, 15 years of this crap is enough!

4)  I need to accept the fact most of my summer miles are going to be slow, except hopefully on my planned race days!

Ok ... for the run ... wore my heart rate monitor for first time this year, figured I would shoot for 9-10 miles & try to keep it between 14 & 150.  Realized at the first hill in Mile 2, keeping it under 150 was going to be tough, no matter how slow I went!

Had to stop at Mile 3 & 3.5 for walk breaks because I got a side stitch.  From here on out it was slow, cuz I am pretty certain anything faster would have brought the side stitch back.  Mile 5 was on a relatively flat shaded trail by the lake.  Stopped at Mile 6 to refill water bottle at gas station.  Stopped at Mile 7 because there was a small section of shade, and I wanted to!  Probably walked half a dozen times the next mile thru small sections of shade.  Made myself run last mile to get home!

I stopped my watch for all walk breaks - total elapsed time 139:29

Why did I sign up for a 10k of July 4 with a goal of breaking 40 minutes?  On a hilly course!

I went to TN last weekend (from SLC's 40 degrees to 97 degrees in Knoxville). I'm pretty sure that the heat and humidity is worse than the altitude! I'm jealous you are running the Peachtree - I hear it's a great race!

Thanks Andrea! Yeah, I dream about elevation, cooler temps, & drier air! :) Peachtree is a lot of fun, it is very high energy & attracts some serious competition. This is the first time my qualifying time has me sub-seeded, which means I get to line up in the wave right behind the elites & start at the same time. They won't be in my sight for long, but it will be nice to have most of the 60,000 runners behind me!

Good luck in your first marathon Sat, I am sure you will do awesome, you are running really strong!

I know this feeling, every run felt awful for a couple weeks when it started heating up. Hopefully it will get a little easier for you, I don't think you can ever acclimate enough for it to be pleasant (you did just race an awesom HM a few days ago too). I'm still grouchy about the hot mornings but your advice about slowing down was spot on. My trick now is to run out-and-backs in the morning before work. Have to keep running the whole distance or I'll be late!

I'm like Steam, I had to laugh when I read your post. I felt like I was reading a race report. I laughted because I know exactly how you felt. A few weeks ago, when we really started getting hot I went out for a long run. Well about 12 into the run I got dehydrated and dizzy and had to flag a neighbor (who I didn't know) to carry me back the last 4 miles.

And BTW...What wrong with Texas...???

SJ - Yeah, sometimes I forget my own advice, it is ok to slow down! I think I am suffering from post race withdraw ... the problem with a great race, is wondering how you will possibly improve for the next one!

Steam8 & IJR ... glad it made you laugh ... it made me want to cry! Nothing wrong with TX, but let's just say if I move, it would more likely be to UT than TX, unless I retire from running ... which seems to be what I am contemplating! Although, I did just learn my 1/2 time gets me guaranteed entry into NYC marathon in 2012, so I have to wait 17 months before retiring, cuz next year will be Boston & NYC! :)

Don't let a side stitch get you down. Keep running and try to exhale hard when the foot opposite the stitch hits the ground. Works every time within a few minutes. I don't have any tricks for the heat. It's nice and cool out here in the NW.

There are always goals after Boston, mine was guaranteed entry to NYC, just got that. Next is sub 3 ... maybe in October. Then will be a 2:48 which is needed to qualify for the USA Masters Championships. I am sure there is a next natural step from there, but that is where I draw the line! I guess the first step is to suck it up today & run in the heat! lol

Thanks for the tip Trap, I will definitely try that! I think the heat is a major contributing factor to the side stitch, so I think you just gave me advice for running in the heat! lol I think I will try altering my breathing before I move!
