Perfect race execution, rain stopped 5 minutes before start and I ran out of parking garage ad the National Anthem played. Purposely started at back of pack so runner traffic would keep me contained. First 10 miles was a progressive run with a 9:45 first mile and an 8:13 10th mile. I wanted to close with a benchmark time for a 5k, and I was thrilled to run a 23:56. <7:49, 7:52, 7:30 plus 45 seconds >. The first 12 miles were comfortable, obviously I went out of my comfort zone the last 1.1 miles because I could taste a sub 24. I will race a 5k in 3 weeks, which will give me some time to do some speed work & build a base. I have no idea what time I will shoot for, but after today I am a lot closer than I thought I was ... thank God for muscle memory!

I took a few days off because rain & recovery time is always good.

9 puddle hopping miles in rain @ LKSP. Winter monsoons not so bad here, 59 degrees. 90% on hardpacked sand, with 3 miles on beach, even at high tide provided an excellent running surface. I did not see another sole the entire run, until I detoured from beach & stopped to tell Ranger station not to lock me in at sunset. I have the 24/7 code to get in/out, but forgot to put permit on dash, so I did not want them out looking for me! Otherwise I would have easily run another 4 or 5 miles.

The ranger was the guy I bought the pass/permit from a few days earlier & he said, No worries, I recognized your truck. Well, at this point, I was off the beach & it was still raining, so I thanked him for giving me a reason to ug my run short because I may have run on the secluded beach all night. The ranger is a young lad, but he grew up a out 45 minutes from me in PA.

All in All, a good day. This park will be my new running haven, just 20 minutes North.

Avg pace: 8:38. My miles on beach were low 8's at steady effort. This will translate well to paces on pavement.

Yes Tom, & it was.

In fact, I am going back tonight to do again, minus the rain & puddle jumping. :) the first 5 miles are shaded trails & then out to beach running for sunset. Life is good.

LKSP - All on packed sand.

5 mile loop on trails, then 5 mile loop on beach starting 20 minutes before sunset. Of course, the most spectacular colors often come after sunset time & tonight it did not disappoint. Just had to turn cap light on for the half mile service trail from beach back to trailhead.

8:54 average pace. Feeling good after 2 back 2 back medium long runs. I do believe it is safe to say said is my all time favorite 10 mile loop, & lord knows I don't like to run more than 10 miles unless I am getting a free t-shirt!

You know, I've lived on the west coast of FL since 1983. I've seen countless sunsets at the beach. But I don't think I've ever run the beach at sunset. I don't know why I've never put those two things together!

Brilliant! (but no t-shirt)

Yes Tom, it is just 3 miles from where I live, but often I drive there to run so I can enjoy the park instead of running there & then back home! May as well make use of the $60 annual state park parking pass! I am still trying to figure out what the SWOM bridge is ...

Thanks Preston, I have decided that running a good 5k is nothing more than setting a realistic goal & accepting that there is nothing we cant endure for 20 minutes. I now have 6 weeks to prepare for my next 5k, and I need to determine what level of pain theeshold I am willing to endure! Sub 21 would be nice, so I guess it is time to start incorporating the dreaded 400m intervals into my training! :)

After 18 holes of golf in Cape Coral, I headed to Bowditch Point as that was closest beach & daylight was running out. After a half mile down to beach, I was hoping for a good out & back, but after 100 yards I had to make a turn she to an atrocious smell. I got in 6 half mile loops before it got too dark @ 8:44 am. There is a 50 yard up & 50 down hill on trail that is worth returning to run 100 repeats on, so all was not lost.

18 holes of golf followed by 7 miles @ LKSP, 2 Miles on trail, 5 on beach. 8:44 am ... some leg strengthening & stretching before final mile cool down.

Time to start thinking about race goals for Half Saturday. First draft: 6.9 mile warmup with 15 second progressive miles from 9:30 down to 8:00. Followed by a 45:15 10k with 5 second progressive miles from 7:35 down to 7:10 with a 0.2 mile kick to finish. This would be a 1:46:30 ... a 7+ minute improvement over 4 weeks ago. I give credit to this blog & the weekly mileage graph ... I almost bailed yesterday, but am committed to seeing a smart graph in 16 weeks! February was a good month, 4 consecutive weeks of 32-34 miles & the incorporation of cycling to keep myself from going overboard on running mileage. Target for March is 35-40 now. Today I will rest, because tomorrow morning is mile repeats .. and the RLRF training pace I am supposed to hit for a 3:25 marathon 16 weeks out ... is faster than I can actually run. :) I will catch you yet my friend, I just need you to pick up the pace a little. Lol. Great job this weekend, Preston!!!

Tom, could not have been better ... I think my wild imagination makes me faster. Now I am thinking a stretch goal of sub 3 is not unreasonable on a course with 5,000' of drop ... as long as I can find some hills to run down! Lol. Actually my imagination is not that wild ... but maybe a 3:06:21 ... which would be a PR & likely get me in the 2020 10:00 wave! :)

Haha Preston, I would expect you to be right on my heels... or possibly me chasing you! Hopefully you will get in the 10:25 wave ... you might need to pick a fall marathon ... these standards make everything tougher ... see the wave cutoffs for 2019, they could be lower in 2020!

That is a 5:57 pace 160 meter kick, I was just happy to still be kicking!

I have a 10k in two weeks, originally my goal was sub 44, but now I am thinking sub 43 ... with a stretch goal of sub 42. Either way, I am thrilled with the rate of my progress, always good to be ahead of schedule & honestly with 12 weeks to go, I need to transition from fast running to running longer!

This week I am travelling & getting scans @ NCI to assess the enlarged lymph nodes in my neck ... praying the doctors give me green light to proceed on my journey & come back in another 3 months ... post BQ @ Mt Hood June 29.

Debating signing up for a 10 miler in Harrisburg Saturday as a fast training run ... maybe 7:30,7:25,7:20, etc down to 6:45 ... which would be my 42 minute 10k pace. :)

Trails and Beach miles sound fun but I know they are hard!

From Tom K on Wed, Mar 27, 2019 at 10:42:03 from 47.206.60.114

It's amazing for as long as I've lived on the west coast of Florida, that I hadn't heard of LKSP before you wrote about it.

Then I did a bit of research. And since my wife and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this May - Guess where we're going?

I would say we should get together for a run on Lovers Key, during my anniversary weekend, but that just sounds too weird...

I'll see you at the Gator Wilderness races in April.

From JG on Wed, Mar 27, 2019 at 11:36:46 from 174.200.7.132

Preston, the sand is very hard packed on trails .... & pretty firm on this particular beach as well, so not typical 'sand' running, but definitely soft surface which my aging body likes. Seems like everytime I get back on pavement, I am faster too. :)

Tom, you & your wife will love it, it is my favorite park. There is a 5k there May 11 ... which I will do unless I am on my way to Colorado. Technically, my 4 month lease is up end of April ... but I would like to throw down a sub 20 on my home turf training ground before heading west!

Return was cool down mile intervals in the 9's, with a short walk after each mile. 42 miles in 7 days, many fast ... so I will go easy this week as I will be traveling anyway. I was considering a 10 mile race Saturday ... but I think rest might be better, we shall see

Tough racing conditions, 70 & 97% humidity. My goal was no 7's & pick it up if I could. In hindsight, I should have gone 7:30, 7:15, 7 00, and go from there. Started out 6:53 with a pack of about 8, 7:00 flat for miles 2 & 3 & at turnaround I knew the 'back' was going to suck. At the next water table I walked & flipped a cup of cold water upside down on my head & let it drip out to cool me down. It was at this point I threw 'race pace' out the window ... & repeated the walk/water dousing at @ 2 more water stops. I did manage a 7:36 & 7:39 for miles 4 & 5. I pi led up a little with a 7:16 mile 6, and closed with a 6:44 pace. I do not like 10ks ... particularly in 97% humidity! I ran another 10k recovery miles in the evening on sand at a 9 minute pace with lots of walk breaks ... I enjoyed the second 10k alot more!

Rabbit races (5K & 10K) are tough, I think they are harder than doing marathons. Congrats on winning 3rd place in your AG and bringing home the bronze!Too bad your doing the Erie Mary in Sept, you should check out the Huntville "full Monte" in Utah in sept, it's a Double "BQ" in one mary!!!!! Super course....

You had some solid races - you still preparing? Any news from the doc?

From Tom K on Tue, Apr 23, 2019 at 08:57:09 from 47.206.60.114

Are you still doing the Gator Wilderness race this weekend? I'll be there with the whole crew.

From JG on Tue, Apr 23, 2019 at 09:48:14 from 73.23.83.22

Tom, in all likelihood, no.

Things move fast in my world & I have to stay on my toes! My intent was to be here through the LKSP 5k on May 11, despite my lease ending April 30.

I learned last week that my Dad's CLL has returned aggressively after 28 years of successfully managing it. He is 85 & played golf nearly every week this past summer! He started an oral chemo pill on Tuesday. To complicate matters he is in process of preparing house to sell & moving into an apartment on June 1.

Additionally, the swollen lymph nodes in my neck have become increasingly visibly apparent, so I need to select new Oncologist prior to my planned departure for Colorado altitude running by mid-May.

I have a busy week of preparation & hope to leave for PA Saturday with a stopover in Atlanta. I will be in the Northeast 2 weeks, to include a road trip to Vermont with my Dad & son.

I know all that was a mouthful... but since I am not really posting daily stuff here, I wanted to give an update on my journey & ask for your prayers. I ran 33 miles in sand over 3 days of Easter celebration, so my body aches but that is normal, so I am in good health ... but the battle is beginning. If next winter brings me back to the Gulf Coast to prepare for Boston 2020, we will definitely have to connect for a run. My goal remains to BQ on June 29 @ Revel Mt Hood. That is the earliest I could have myself ready ... and in all likelihood I will have to begin treatments before the Fall marathons.

Hey Dan & Preston, that update is for you guys as well, as I know you hold me in your prayers!

Happy Trails!

From Dan on Tue, Apr 23, 2019 at 11:14:48 from 104.178.66.147

Thanks for the update JG - Lots on the plate and that is a lot of miles over Easter! Thoughts and prayers my friend. Hope to see you in Boston again or anywhere else for that matter!

From Tom K on Tue, Apr 23, 2019 at 11:51:11 from 47.206.60.114

Somewhere in there, over the next 60 or so days, you have to train for a very downhill marathon, on the other side of the country?

That is a lot of stuff to juggle! It would have been good to meet while you were down here. I'm kind of bummed that it will not work out.

Safe travels, and best wishes for your family. I'm really rooting for you to get the BQ!

Thanks again for introducing me to LKSP.

It's July 3rd and we haven't heard from JG since April 9th, what gives??? Whats happening in your life JG?

From JG on Sun, Jul 28, 2019 at 09:47:13 from 174.200.11.42

Sorry for lack of updates! Training for a marathon quickly transitioned to altitude hiking with views. I began 4 weekly treatments of Rituximab, an antibody, to combat swollen lymph nodes and a mass the size of a racquetball in my colon. Hope to be running again soon... follow consult to review fresh set of scans on August 20 ... to assess next step.

From Tom K on Sun, Jul 28, 2019 at 13:07:51 from 47.201.50.126

Thanks for the update. Keep on working at it. I hope you had some great views!

JG,

I believe you are finished with your final infusion now and am praying for GREAT results...!!!

From JG on Tue, Sep 10, 2019 at 21:32:45 from 174.200.45.31

Yes Preston, a couple weeks ago. Swelling has gone down & stomach pains gone, so that is good. I go for scans & consult on Sept. 23rd, as the doctor wanted the antibody to continue to work for a month before ordering scans. Thanks for asking.
