I read race reports of people faster than me today ... will that make me faster?  :)

I also was encouraged when I saw that the guy that beat me by 12 seconds at my half in June, ran a 3:03 marathon on a flat course in January.  So I think it is realistic for me to shoot for a sub 3 in October on a downhill course, and I would be thrilled with a 3:05 too ... still plenty of time to get ready!

All my best races have come with almost no running the previous week & very low mileage the week before that ... so I am resting this week ... but will throw in some shorter speed work sessions.  Racing a steep downhill half next Saturday, goal is sub 1:24, a cool, dry weather front would really help!  If it is hot & humid, I will accept whatever time I run, but still shoot for my stretch goal (really the only goal I have!)

Lastly, a huge congrats to the U.S. Womens soccer team on defeating Brazil in penalty kicks in the World Cup quarterfinal match today!

Good luck on the half. Is it in GA?

I have learned that I am not a very good downhill runner, unfortunately.

JG - that was a really awesome ending to the game wasn't it?

From derhammer on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 14:22:04 from 70.113.125.159

actually, I missed it. Penalty shootouts are stressful to watch. I will need to look it up on youtube or espn.

DH - Actually it is in NC mtns, so there is hope for it to be a little cooler. Forecast is low 60's at start & low 70's at finish, with chance of scattered thunderstorms. So it will probably be very high humidity, but that is about 10 degrees cooler than it was up there this morning! I think my 35 years of playing soccer helps me do well on downhill & not suffer much from the downhill 'pounding'

Tim - Absolutely amazing ... Amy Wambach's goal in the 122nd minute was perfect execution ... and they showed nerves of steel with 5 perfectly placed PK's ... Brazilian goalie never had a chance! An instant classic!! Hope they can follow it up with 2 more wins.

Good luck on the upcoming half! Where is it? If you find out what makes you faster before a race....pass that info on to me! :)

That's why I read your Blog...to make me a faster runner!

Sub 3 ... Now I'm excited for you !!!

USA Rocks ;-0

Steam - it is in NC mtns, beautiful area! My method of getting faster is not exactly endorsed by this high mileage blog! lol My race prep is Rest, Rest, Rest! :) I am not worried about my aerobic ability to run the time I need (sub 1:24), because it is big downhill, it will boil down to having leg strength to keep the turnover rate high later in the race. After 6 months of higher mileage than I have ever run in a entire year ... I just need my legs to be rested ... and of course a little race day magic!

IJR - Thx, I am excited too, but I will really be excited when I can attempt it on a course that is not all down hill! Maybe Boston, I have 9 months to prepare! :) You are going to be in Boston ... right? :)

USA update: Currently beating France in Semifinal match 1-0 at halftime. WooHoo!!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Jul 13, 2011 at 14:26:19 from 70.183.217.4

Nice rest! I'm about to take an extra day this week and it feels like the world might end. I think your goals are very reasonable, sounds good.

From I Just Run on Wed, Jul 13, 2011 at 14:32:05 from 166.205.10.109

And the final score.......USA 3 France 1 ...!

From flatlander on Thu, Jul 14, 2011 at 22:50:23 from 76.31.26.153

Nothing wrong with resting before a race, in fact I think it is mandatory if you want to get your best time.

From Dan on Fri, Jul 15, 2011 at 21:00:00 from 24.209.83.20

I'm late to the party, but I'm back and twas a great victory and rest is key! (Easy to say, tough to do!)
