Very pleased with both my races this morning!  5k @ 7:30 & 10k @ 8:30

Had never sun sub 20, jumped to sub 19 with an 18:54.

My second fastest 10k time with a 41:59, was not trying to PR, felt good.

Saw several friends at race & met several new ones as well.

WOW! That is sooooo awesome - congrats on the huge 5K PB. Woot! (and to run a 10K after that? *bowing down to you!*)

Thanks Kristen, I was definitely psyched. I was a little concerned, as a friend of mine talked me in to going out to see a live band last night ... and 4 beers and being out until 2 a.m. is not exactly wise race preparation! :)

Now I am setting my sights on a sub 18 5k ... track workouts are new to me, I did a couple last year & this year only 2, in the last couple weeks. So I would like to think if I can do one a week for a few months, I will continue to see improvement. By the time I start training for a fall marathon it would be nice if a sub 3 marathon were a realistic goal, based on my 5k & 10k times.

Wow are you kidding me? Awesome day of running! I figured you would be close to breaking 19 with those mile repeat times you turned in recently, but then to follow it up with a solid 10K is awesome.

Sounds like you found the magical pre-race routine... lol. Just remember that before your sub 18 and sub 3! :)

Congrats once again! Hope you get some much-deserved R&R. Cheers!

Thanks Joe, although I was not 'racing' the 10k, I was pushing pretty darn hard at Miles 5 & 6 to keep them sub 7:00 ... I think they were 6:58 & 6:59. lol I really did not have a target time, but then I saw the clock from about 200 yards out & realized I might break 42 ... went into an all out Sprint and got it by 1 second. For a moment there I thought I was in high school! :)

Kristen, I think I am going to shy away from that pre-race routine ... logic tells me if I drank 4 beers to run 9 miles, I would have to drink 12 to run a marathon ... and if I did that, I don't think I would make it to the starting line!

Oh ... and so much for celebrating being in a new age group ... I would have finished 1st in age group if I was 44, but came in 3rd because of that darn b-day! But I did finish in the Top 8 overall in both races. I knew I was in trouble at the Start line when the guy next to me was wearing an Atlanta Track Club competitive team jersey ... I asked his Age ... 47 ... so my hopes of winning Age Group were doomed before the race even began! :)

If I can get to sub 18, I can get one of those jerseys & play the intimidating role ... instead of the intimidated one!

LOL... wise decision re the pre-race routine. For the marathon, perhaps pasta is a better carb option. :)

Funny comment re feeling like you were back in high school. Running makes me feel that way all the time! It's a great feeling. Good for you for deciding to give it that little extra at the 10K finish line.

So, had you not just run a 5K that same day, where do you figure your 10K fitness is at? :)

From JG on Sun, Apr 24, 2011 at 11:23:15 from 74.176.15.75

Kristen, I would have to think I could run a sub 40 10k now, although it would be tough & probably not by much! 41:35 is my PR last fall & that was on a course that had a net elevation drop. I probably will not race again until July 4, which is the Peachtree 10k (like 60,000 runners!) - but my qualifying time got me sub-seeded, which means I will line up right behind the elites & ahead of all the masses! My goal is to break 40 in that race, but that is going to take 8 hard weeks of training, as it is hilly & the second half mostly uphill. Even more than that ... temperatures can be pretty brutal here in July, even at 7:30 in the morning! There also is a good chance I will stick with my last pre-race carb loading on this one, since it is a holiday weekend! :)

From KristenL on Sun, Apr 24, 2011 at 17:16:40 from 24.76.204.21

Peachtree sounds like a great venue for a PB effort, despite the temps. Even split with a negative split effort (given the uphill second half)? :)

From JG on Sun, Apr 24, 2011 at 21:35:48 from 74.176.15.75

That would probably be the smart way to run it, but I can pretty much guarantee I will blow it out on the first 3 miles downhill, living the American dream on the fourth ... then I will hold on for dear life the rest of the way ... miles 4 & 5 are pretty brutal. This is what I did in 2009, problem was I really had not trained at all ... so I crashed hard on Mile 4! i will be more ready this year, and be mentally prepared to push through the pain! :) I train hills just about every run unless I go to a track ... I am thinking maybe 19:00/20:30. Now that I think about it, I will probably go run the course early early next Sunday before any traffic is on the road ... and see what kind of time I can post ... and then build my 8 week training plan! :)
