A rare Sunday morning event here in the Bible Belt. The race was advertised as a 15K, but all who wore Garmins had it a little over. The start was on roadway for about .3 miles then we hit the single track steep downhill switchbacks, making for a 6:30 first mile for me. I was in 6th place when we hit the trail and was able to hold onto this position thru the second aid station at 6.5 miles. My plan was to just run how I feel and hope to finish in the top 10. Some short steep climbs started to take a toll on me in the last 2 miles and three runners passed me. If a Masters division would have been included in the results, I would have been third in it. Overall a fun race, and a nice opportunity to run fast on trails.

I saw the results, and from the times, it looks like a brutal course. What trails did it cover on the mountain?

I wish I had been there to run it...

Started at the ranger station, went down the road to the bikers lot at the start of the Sinks trail ran down to the intersection with Mtn Mist trail toward O'Shaunessy Point where we went left on the Goat trail back to Three Benches, followed the Keith trail around Stone Cuts also using some connector trails to get back to Three Benches, back up part of Sinks then a right on Mtn Mist down to the cross over of closed Bankhead Pkwy, up and up and up Cold Springs to the Blue trail back to the ranger station.

No tough long climbs, but a lot of small ones and and equal amount of fast descents, plus you're not used to trying to run road race pace on the technical trails with fall foliage covering rocks and roots. But hey, that's trail running. Put it oun your calender for next year.

Pinhoti still in play?

Sounds like a fun course; I might have to try it in years to come...

Still chompin ant the bit getting ready for Pinhoti...9 days and counting....
