Personal:

I used to run competitively, and maybe I will do so again someday.  Right now I am primarily running to try and get in better shape, and to maintain both physical and emotional health, but also for the simple joy that comes when I run.

I am also the proud daddy of five little ones.  I love the opportunity that I have to be a daddy, and my challenge is to balance my family responsibilities with work and running.

I wasn't planning on running as much as I did today, but Kimia wanted to run a time trial for the mile since we are at sea level in California and I ended up running twice.  I ran 8 miles easy in the morning, and in the evening I paced Kimia to a new pr in the mile in 8:17 (1:52, 2:10, 2:08, 2:07).  The track we were on was a quarter mile track, not a 400m track so we didn't need to worry about adding on extra distance at the end.  it was pretty obvious that Kimia went out too fast as she ran the first lap 15 seconds faster than any other, and she had splits of 0:52 and 1:00 for that first lap.  I was worried that she would fade a lot at the end, but I was impressed with how she held it together.  To top it off, there was a good amount of wind, and even with drafting off of me, Kimia told me afterwards that she was really struggling into the wind.  The 1:52 first lap, and particularly the 52 second first half lap tells me that if Kimia simply maintains some consistency and builds mileage she will be able to break 7:00 for the mile eventually.

I ran 1 mile from the BART station to Kimia's sister's house in Concord after presenting some research at the ACSM conference in San Francisco.

I ran about 4 miles today, running around San Francisco "sightseeing" before taking the train home from the ACSM conference.  I ran over by the Giants baseball stadium, and also ran by the water and through some parts of town.  I can say that I would never want to live in a city like San Francisco.  In order to get here every day I had to drive 15-20 minutes to the train station, followed by an hour train ride up into town, followed by about a mile walk (run in my case) from the train station to where the conference was at.  Total time spent commuting every day was about 3 hours.  If I just drove every day it wouldn't be much better time wise because of traffic.  To top it off, it is really expensive to take the train all the time, and if you are driving you have to pay for parking (unless your workplace has its own garage and they don't charge).  Definitely not my idea of the American dream... more like a nightmare to me.
