Personal:

I used to run competitively, and maybe I will do so again someday.  Right now I am primarily running to try and get in better shape, and to maintain both physical and emotional health, but also for the simple joy that comes when I run.

I am also the proud daddy of five little ones.  I love the opportunity that I have to be a daddy, and my challenge is to balance my family responsibilities with work and running.

I ran 9.5 miles today, running 1.5 miles to school in the morning, 1.5 miles home in the afternoon, and 6.5 miles pushing Shayon in the running stroller in the evening.  My evening run was finished in just under 52 minutes.  I broke my day up this way because I was feeling tired today, and I wanted to take things easier without sacrificing the mileage.  I also got a cut on my right foot on the big toe, so I didn't run barefoot today.  I found out later in the evening that some junk had gotten into the cut making it hurt worse.  I am going to back off on the. barefoot stuff for a few days until the cut heals.

Jeff:

I think it would be good to do a 5 K or similar distance time trial to see where you are at. Ideally on the track or some very flat reliable course.

I was planning on running a road 5k on the 12th or 13th of July for this very reason. Do you think I should do something sooner?

I think it would be good to have a benchmark to work from prior to the race. This does not need to be an all out effort - it can be, for example, a certain challenging but likely doable pace target, e.g 80 seconds per lap, with an all out kick in the last 200 meters which will be an indicator of how easy that pace was.

That sounds reasonable. I may try something like that on Saturday. I may end up doing it on the indoor track as well in order to control for temperature, humidity, and wind.
