Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in < 4years.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Quick summary...2:43:37.   It was absolutely the best weather I think I have ever run a marathon in...50-60 degrees with a light breeze and partly sunny skies.  I ran well and felt good through the half, but miles 15-19 were very dark times.  I felt better by 20 miles through the finish, just couldn't get going again, running only 6:30-6:45ish.  Trading places with other runners from 20 through the finish, ended up 30th overall (27th male), 2nd in AG and 5th Master (Ken Pliska won the Master's title again in 2:33, such a strong runner).   Ran the first 10K in 6:01 avg, 10k-HM in 6:00 pace, HM - 20M in 6:19 pace, 20-26.2M in 6:40 average pace.

Deciding to run this race with only a month of preparation and my lack of any real endurance work since November really showed up.  Too many miles on a TM didn't help, but it is a good start for the year to hopefully improve upon.

I am too old for this &^$%...now time for a beer and more pool time!  Back to the tundra tomorrow so time to soak up the sun!

Good job Jeff, Those flat courses aren't as easy as I wanted them to be :) Go take a break, you deserve it.

Enjoy your hard-earned poolside beer! Nice run!

You are not too old Jeff ... but well-deserving of some recovery carbs (aka beer). Good job, all your experience paid off in your ability to regroup after some tough miles.

From steve ash on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 18:02:23 from 98.202.79.72

Sounds like a familiar tune for my last couple of races also especially at 15-19. Definitely take a break and then go back to the drawing board with fresh legs and a fresh outlook.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 19:09:29 from 65.100.210.17

I'll bet this is the toughest time of the year to get ready for and up for a marathon. I can barely drag myself out for 5 or 6 miles. So I say awesome job, very nice time!! enjoy that nice weather down there, and take a well deserved break now.

From Rob Murphy on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 19:10:24 from 24.10.248.6

Way to gut through a tough race.I'm pretty sure you aren't too old! Just the trials and tribulations of the marathon runner.

From Mauri on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 19:11:06 from 174.27.98.95

No matter what you think we still think you did awesome!

From Mark on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 20:39:23 from 173.168.88.68

Those dark times can be devastating, glad you were able to feel better 20 through the finish! Great job on a well run race!

From Tom on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 20:59:58 from 67.199.180.90

Nice job gutting it out after things went south. I'm sure it was just one of those days and that you'll bounce back strong as ever. Enjoy the R & R!

Congrats on a fine race.

From Jon on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 21:33:03 from 74.177.82.79

Sorry you felt like you had a rough race. Still placed top 5 masters in a very competitive race while training in the dead of winter.

From Alana on Sun, Jan 16, 2011 at 22:37:00 from 69.20.188.20

Jeff you are such an inspiration to so many people. Congrats on another race! I hope you rest completely and heal quick! Sleep well!

Great race, Jeff! Don't listen to any of these guys, we are getting old! :) That's what makes marathons fun. I just spent three days trying to run in Cache Valley in fog and rain so enjoy that weather! Hope to get some runs in with you this summer

From derhammer on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 09:00:00 from 24.28.82.222

Congrats, Jeff. I think you owe yourself more than just one beer! ;-)

From JimF on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 09:23:12 from 68.46.211.156

Great job hanging tough and finishing strong! It is tough to race it the dead of the winter and this will be something to build on for the rest of the year.

From ReedRunner on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 10:44:22 from 216.112.31.100

Jeff I'm just glad you're not like some of those other top runners who think if they're not going to win then they should just drop out. No matter what, you are pushing it to the end and that teaches us all about endurance in running and in life.

From Ron Horton on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 11:53:16 from 24.17.172.185

Great job out there Jeff! Another "old" person BQ'd down there yesterday, Erin Harvego. Sounds like you had a great time and you are an inspiration to many.

From sflores on Mon, Jan 17, 2011 at 15:23:21 from 65.202.194.194

That's a solid finish for a Jan. mary. Have fun!

From JFogg on Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 10:52:34 from 204.134.132.225

Since we live in the same city, I can only be amazed at how well prepared you were for a marathon in the middle of winter. I'm concerned that our winter won't let me adequately prepare for Ogden in MAY.

You should be very proud of that race. We are!

From Dustin on Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 11:38:59 from 204.113.48.131

Nice job on the race, have a safe trip back.

From Bret on Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 14:33:17 from 64.128.133.66

Nice job Jeff - working through tough or "dark" miles shows real experience and mental fortitude - that's a victory in itself. Congrats!

From Shan on Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 22:05:29 from 184.155.223.23

Jeff! Way to go! Hope you are getting your legs under you at this point ~ happy running: it has warmed up to the 30's :)

From MichelleL on Wed, Jan 19, 2011 at 19:03:43 from 67.41.228.8

I know that nasty section of that race, so hard to get going again. You've gotta pace me to an OTQ before you hang up your towel :D I'm sure you'll be itching for another marathon really soon.

From Wesley Hunt on Thu, Jan 20, 2011 at 00:58:41 from 99.25.245.254

Impressive finish, particularly for a mid-January race. Way to go on Miles 15-19. You took your shot. I love it.

From jtshad on Thu, Jan 20, 2011 at 10:40:38 from 204.134.132.225

Thanks for the nice comments everyone, it is great to be part of such a supportive community of runners!! You all inspire me to keep training and racing hard!

Ron, welcome to the Blog, get to logging your runs!

Michelle, let me know which race and I will be there for you!

BTW, the beers after the race were indeed awesome...as was the time lounging by the pool!

From Mark on Thu, Jan 20, 2011 at 11:48:14 from 24.129.132.78

Wow, 4th place on the hot discussions list, only 13 more to go to tie with Paul and Michelle, not that it's a contest or anything.

From Walter on Thu, Jan 20, 2011 at 23:34:22 from 24.10.169.110

I think thats a great time for a winter race and that course although they say its flat, is challenging to us runners that are used to running in mountain races. Its hard for me to not have a little downhill rest from time to time.

From Marathon Dreamer on Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 12:56:50 from 174.254.32.46

I think I could go that pace maybe in a car!!! Lol!!! Although u felt it wasn't your best, u hung in there.... you are not old! That would make me ancient!!!

From jtshad on Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 13:02:58 from 204.134.132.225

Kim, I actually have you beat by a couple of years...but welcome to the fabulous forties!

That was my reaction at the time when I finished, I no longer feel that way but it is a good conversation starter!
