Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in  2025.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

7M early this morning on a VERY WINDY day...felt like a hurricane out there at times, especially when I was heading south.  Luckily, most of the run was down Sunnyside Road which is an east/west connector so I just had a heavy cross-wind for the run.  Overall a decent run for 4:15 in the morning.  Left hamstring was a bit tight during the run, but not worried about it right now.

I talked with my friend Pat who ran and won the Mesa Falls marathon last weekend.  He indicated that the portions of the run on the gravel road (13 or so miles) were especially tough this year as it was very dry, washboard and slippery and let his calves really feeling strained.  With this in mind, I am really rethinking running Salmon as nearly 20 miles of the race are on gravel roads and I am sure they will be no better than those in Island Park for the Mesa Falls race.  I just don't think I need/want to cause that much strain on my body before TCM just for a training race and a possible win in the marathon.  I would rather be fresh and healthy heading into the Master's championships with a solid last few weeks of training.  I will likely call the RD in the next day or two to discuss this more, but I am leaning heavily to not running.

Total time:  55:30  (Statos 2 - 41 miles)

5.25M around the greenbelt on a very windy day with Pat B.  He is still recovering from Mesa Falls marathon, so we just took it easy and had a great conversation about work, family, running.

Total time: 41:30 (Stratos 1 - 73 miles)

If you're not used to running on gravel, dropping out might be a good idea. Save it for TCM.

Sounds like a good plan. With the training you are doing you will be ready to rock the TCM.

It is not necessarily that I am not used to running on it (the HM I did on Aug. 2 was a lot of gravel), I just don't know if I want to have to work that hard for a easier training run and have to deal with the recovery going into TCM.

My buddy Pat said he would do a longer training run at a good clip to offset the training op this run provided.

I also thought of changing to the full at Poky, but feel that running the HM at a hard tempo pace (5:40ish) on the rolling second half of the course is probably better than for my training than dealing with the downhill of the first half of the marathon.

Thanks for the feedback. Travel safely and have a fun trip!

I am stoked for the TCM. It should be a blast. I just want to slam the training for the next month or so. It looks like you are doing great. Meagan and I already have a room reserved, but before you cancel the reservation you have, please let me know where and how much it would be. Thanks, Seth

I agree with you totally, but I was all set to run with you in Salmon :-). But your right, the gravel would cause the legs to work a lot harder and the Poky downhill would not be the best training for the type of marathon your running and wanting to do well at.

You also want to consider at peaking at the right time for TCM. That's what I've tried to accomplish this year is not to run so many marathon and really try to peak for the Pocatello Marathon.

The rolling hills in Inkom would be a great training run by really pushing it hard. I notice when I run that section it's a workout and it really improves your turn over rate.

Although we could run Salmon very slow :-). (who knows my legs probably won't be alive in that amount of time anyway after Poky).
