"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka
"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

| | 9:45 AM. Clear, 79F. Urban assault from the shop. Kind of a weird time of day for me to run, but that's how it had to go down today. I'm actually kind of liking running the roads around here. Early enough in the day the traffic isn't too bad. Around mile 6 I found myself at the high school track and did a couple of miles there. I ran a couple of quarters "fast". It wasn't speed work, I just wanted to see how fast I could go while still maintaining a relaxed form. the quarters were 97 and 95 seconds with a quarter easy in between. That's a 6:24 pace. I'm thinking maybe I could break a 6:30 for a mile today. In high school my senior year, our PE coach whimsically had us run a mile one day. Me and another kid, the high school "burnout", beat the class and ran around 5:40. I often wonder if I had gotten into track in high school how I would have done. I also wonder if I could break a 6:00 mile sometime in the future with a little work. Needless to say, I'm not a threat to the local elite runner.
