"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Nice work, I think you are doing great! I swear, it takes a month to fully recover. remind me of this next week.

Tomorrow is going to be crazy weather, what are ya going to do???

From april27 on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 14:22:18 from 99.188.251.180

Just curious--is one of the perks of having run a Marathon also to be able to get out of things such as laundry? ie, "Honey canyou do the laundry?" "Um no dear, I did just run a marathon, jeez" Just wondering b/c seriously sign me up!

Can you tell that I have a full day of laundry ahead of me? Blah...

From Lysa on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 14:57:19 from 76.23.52.240

April27 I think running a marathon should be a pass for everything for a good 2 weeks. Do you think it would really work?? I doubt it.

JD, nice run

Kelli, im worried about the weather too. I always forget how hard it is to get out there when its cold

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 15:07:17 from 24.8.167.243

I'll watch to see how you all do in the cold tomorrow since I'll get it the next day.

I think that's a perfectly fine run, JD.

From JD on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 15:11:45 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Kelli. Yeah, I don't know how some runners do two marathons a month, or even two a year for that matter. As for the weather, we'll see. It might be time to break out the TM.

April - I love doing laundry. I envy that you have all that laundry to do today. You're so lucky!

Lysa - thanks, remember to take the skinheads bowling.

From JD on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 15:12:30 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Carolyn - I'm kind of looking forward to the change in weather.

From april27 on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 17:27:27 from 99.188.251.180

JD you are hired! Please fly over on Tuesdays to do a bajillion loads of laundry!

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 18:06:22 from 71.219.96.151

Speaking of laundry, I have been doing it all day. Does it never end?????

I actually like running in the cold, but it is hard when we go from one extreme to the next in 24 hours. I do not, however, like wind and I hear we will have that. It will be a treadmill day for me---YEAH, no hills.

From auntieem on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 18:12:06 from 67.182.145.8

Good run JD. I think you are feeling what I expect I will be feeling next week - running without a purpose. One will come.

From Adam RW on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 09:46:47 from 155.101.152.103

That's why April 17th is already on my calendar. Get that next goal up there and then you can still have the focus. That being said I say at least 2wk after a marathon. I'm planning on taking all of Oct easy...

From JD on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 17:00:42 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks you guys. I'm looking for a marathon to do in the Spring. Probably Ogden in May. I might go for the Strider series this Winter. Anybody know of a good half in Oct/Nov around here?

From Adam RW on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 17:12:17 from 155.101.152.103

Sounds like my plan until about a week ago. Not sure about the Oct/Nov half... I switched from Ogden to SLC because I can easily train on the course and my family can easily come and cheer. That and I had a good experience on the course in '08... I thought about doing the Striders or SLC Track Club winter series as well but time/budget may make it only one race a month so a series is out... Sorry to hijack your blog to talk about me. I just thought it was interesting that we had similar plans and wanted to share my opinion...

From JD on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 17:25:06 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Adam, I appreciate your input. I think logistically I would prefer to do SLC, but the reputation of it being a tough course kind of intimidates me. Plus, I ran the Ogden Half last Spring and really enjoyed that part of the course. I guess I've got a little time to figure it out.

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 18:06:29 from 71.219.96.151

I would vote Ogden FULL and SL Half. No reason really, I m no expert. BUT I loved the SL half, I think it is my favorite. Ogden was not my favorite marathon, but my 2nd!! It very pretty.

Here is a half in October: http://www.active.com/page/Event_Details.htm?event_id=1764466&assetId=3B49EC18-0740-4F47-A80B-EBB924127622

I found the race description pretty funny--"This is the most fun you can have in Provo without being arrested!" And they say the race ends at the scariest place on earth, PROVO, UT.

There is always the Snow Canyon half in November (7th) or the Mesquite Half (21st). Hope that gives you some ideas. I will be on a running sabbatical, but I will run vicariously through you.

From Adam RW on Sun, Oct 04, 2009 at 23:25:56 from 155.101.152.103

Kelli, Thanks for knowing the local races. I may have to look into one of those others as well. Have you run the Ogden as a half? The only problem I had with the SLC Half was that the runners were in the way of the full marathoners. I had to dodge in and out of them the last few miles and that was my only complaint about the full...

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 11:39:20 from 71.219.96.151

I have only done the full in Ogden, but I plan to do the half next year instead of the full. I am sick of full marathons---one a year is enough for me!

I would have to agree about the SLC half/full. I felt horrible for all of the full marathon runners having to deal with the slower half marathoners, many of them walking 5-6 people wide! I remember yelling at people to get out of the way when the wheelchair marathoners were coming through and people just seemed clueless. I know many others complained about the half people as well.

From Adam RW on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 12:00:20 from 155.101.152.103

Kelli, Congrats on the St. George on Saturday. I hope the foot behaves soon and that you enjoy your "jogger" status. Maybe I'll see you at the line in Ogden. We'll have to make sure to be off the course for when JD comes through on the full.

As far as the full/half problem. I've had issues with it before. I like that the extra people are out there and the ones that are paying attention and cheer you on are tons of help (not to mention the additional fan support because their families are there). But I wish if a race was going to do that there was more runner education on what to do when the full/wheelchair etc start passing... Also, aid station maintenance and finish line supplies.

From JD on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 12:01:36 from 70.96.78.157

I think I've got the SL marathon mixed up with Deseret News. It's Deseret news that's a really tough course, right? In any event, I'm leaning towards the SL half and Ogden full.

I found a cool looking 5k on November 7th at Wheeler Farm called "Squatters Chasing Tail 5k Fun Run" presented by Therapy Animals of Utah. Sounds like a good cause, and this happens to be one of my favorite local beverages. Also, the awards ceremony take place in a heated barn...nice.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 12:15:20 from 71.219.96.151

That sounds like the perfect race!!! I still need to find one for November...I tell ya, never again will I make it a goal to run at least a race a month. I am spent and falling apart. But the rest from here on out are for FUN. I will jog!

JD, I think that is a good plan. I LOVED the SL half, really! It is fast, just stay out of the way of those wheelchairs!! They had motorcycle cops with them blaring their sirens and everything, and people were not moving! And I was in the 1:35 crowd, runners who should know better!!

Adam and I will cheer you on in the Ogden full. Maybe we will even have some energy to jog back and find you?!?

From JD on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 12:25:08 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Kelli. I really hope you do take it easy for awhile. You really amaze me with your ability to overcome obstacles and "bring it" when it counts. Again, good job at St. George!

I would love it if you guys helped run me in to the finish in Ogden. I can imagine how motivating that would be.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 05, 2009 at 13:12:47 from 71.219.96.151

I am very motivating at the end of a race, as long as I did not run it! Then I am one negative, mean woman! Stay out of my way.

And far as me, I am a freak of nature according to Walter. Really, I am just dumb!! I am in so much pain that I am a little worried this marathon was a huge mistake. And I have LIVED on Ibuprofen and Aleve for 2 months and saw some very scary side effects from that. So, never follow my horrible example!!!

I am running stupid Ragnar Vegas this weekend, STUPID! I may be walking with crutches, but I will be there. I am not missing a vacation away from my kids (and seeing the blue man group)! Taking them with us to St George was exhausting!

So, did you decide on a half soon?
