"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

I feel a day off coming on...

6 weeks after the marathon. I believe the main reason I crashed was because I was over trained. Even though it was my fourth marathon I really consider it my first because it was the first time I gave a conscious effort at training, and had been 6 years since my last marathon. (I've really only had a mileage base going for a little over a year now). I may have done better if I had run bigger mileage in June/July as planned but I ended up with injuries and cut back to 50 - 60 MPW for most of the Summer. Then I tried to cram a few higher mileage weeks into August, and had a short, tired taper before the Sept. 19th event. My diet wasn't very good at that point either. Too much HFC in the form of Powerade and other sundry sugar filled items. I have since kicked the powerade habit and cut way back on other crap. The diet change, combined with several low mileage weeks in a row (40-45 MPW) have me feeling pretty good. Hopefully I can increase my mileage to 50-65 mpw over the next several months and remain strong for the next marathon training cycle, whenever that comes.

Okay, done rambling.

LIve and learn, eh? I've decided that my marathon "problem" is that I need lots more long runs, just to get used to the distance. So, I plan on adding those into the training cycle earlier on, so that I've got several 22 milers under my belt before marathon day this time. I still feel attached to having someone else tell me what to do, though, so I'm going to use a trainer. I admire you for doing it on your own.

Good job on kicking the sugar.

I have an idea for your next marathon. Why don't you go to Oregon and run the Newport Marathon next June?

From JD on Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 19:31:30 from 166.216.128.152

Auntieem - I think that's a good plan to get in longer runs ahead of time. I don't have the discipline to have a coach/trainer. If I don't feel like running a certain workout on any given day I just won't. It might have had me better prepared for TOU though. Live and learn...

Carolyn - I'm seriously considering it. They cap the race at 800 and so far it doesn't look close to filling up. I'll have to wait until January to make a final decision. Meanwhile, I'll watch the numbers and if it gets close I'll just register.

JD--oh no! I drink powerade...i just looked...so I was getting rid of the coke b/c of the caffeine and the HFC...guess I will have to drink what I have and then thats it!

From JD on Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 11:54:18 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Kelli!

April - I was drinking WAY TOO MUCH powerade. Like 2 or 3 32 ouncers a day.

Anything in moderation is probably okay.

okay whew...i drink one 12 oz a day...if that..

From Lysa on Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 14:47:15 from 76.23.52.240

powerade makes me feel sick. I need to find an energy drink that doesnt make me feel that way, so far no luck.

From JD on Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 15:08:15 from 70.96.78.157

I like water. Sometimes a big cold glass of chocolate milk after a run hits the spot.

From Kelli on Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 16:26:45 from 71.219.97.106

I like the Powerade Zero, it is not as sugary!

Seems like a well thought out plan and reasonable assessment to me.
