"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

6 miles. Sunny, 70F. From work, amongst the cars.

The only conclusion I can come to is that Saturdays marathon really was just an 18 mile tempo run, and the 8 mile death march was the ideal cooldown. That plus 2 complete days of rest and I'm feeling pretty good.

Nice attitude! I think I will attempt to think of next week's marathon as a 26 mile tempo run - feeling a bit stressed at times.

I tried to think of my marathon as a long run with lots of people and lots of food.

I'm sorry you had to engage in a death march, but I'm glad you're feeling so well.

Thanks Lysa, Auntieem, and Carolyn. You know, I'm kind of serious about Saturday's "run". I ran hard (for me) for 18 miles (8:31 pace). The rest was very, very easy (10:44 pace). So I don't think it took nearly as much out of me as it would have had I been able to keep up the "hard" marathon pace for those last 8 miles. I probably wouldn't be running yet this week.

Sorry. Can't stop going over the race in my mind, figuring out every little detail. Kind of fun, this marathon stuff. Can't wait to do another one!

You calling it a death march does not make me want to run a marathon (still deciding whether I want to take that plunge.)

From JD on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 21:38:03 from 32.178.181.220

April - "death march" is just a figure of speech. I could also refer to it as "life affirming stroll", or "better than giving birth jaunt". Lol!! Actually, it's the challenge of the marathon that makes it great.
