"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Early lunch run. 5.3 miles.  Sunny, 77F. 9:12 average pace.

The cut back in mileage this week is feeling good. The marathon is a week from tomorrow. My tentative plan is to run tomorrow, take Sunday off, run Mon. Tues. and Wednesday (maybe a short easy trail run).  Off Thursday, and maybe a two or three mile run on Friday. Total miles for next week, before the marathon, in the low 20's.  If any of my thousands of dedicated readers see some glaring flaw in my planned taper, or have any words of wisdom to impart please don't hesitate. I need all the help I can get.

Your plan looks good to me. It's similar to what I did the week before the Ogden Marathon.

After polling the first few throngs of people I saw on the street who follow your blog (odd how they all were wearing identifying t-shirts...), I tend to agree with the masses that it appears to be a good plan. Good luck.

I like your plan; very sane. I'm super excited for you to run your marathon; your training has been so strong!

I appreciate my throng of dedicated readers making the wise decision to condense the accumulative advice down to a manageable level, both for my sake and the server which facilitates this website. It would have been a mess otherwise.

If you haven't received your "JD Rocks" t-shirt yet, please rest assured, as they have all been shipped out as of 3:00 PM Mountain Standard Time today and will be arriving at your door step any day now.

Carolyn - Your taper helped net you a 3:45 at Ogden, which is my time goal, so I simply copied your plan...thank you.

Nevels - your work in polling the masses has been invaluable. If I succeed in reaching my goal at TOU, you will receive 20.0379% of the credit, with the remainder going to sheer luck.

Auntieem - thank you. I can feel your excitement from over here in Utah, and it means a lot to me. I only wish I were as sane as my taper plan.

Lysa - this familiar cheer coming from you, as in days of yore, compels me to...DRINK!

Tonight I'm off for some open mic silliness. It's been a while...

Sounds good to me. I read once that Roger Bannister took a whole week off and went up into the mountains right before breaking the 4 minute mile. I think most of the benefit of running this week is mental.
