"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

I got up with the alarm but I didn't get out early. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

Edit:

We've got this "wildflower patch" in our yard and for weeks I've been watching this sunflower grow...and grow...it's crazy! It's at least 12 ft. tall and just about to bloom. There are several other sunflowers sprouting out there as well, but most of them are only like 6 ft. tall. The stem for the giant sunflower is 3 or 4 inches round, still, I put supports around it. It looks like there are about 15 or so blooms coming out of this one plant. What's more, it's a volunteer!

I can not believe your run yesterday Superman! That heat was killer, and it did not even phase you. NICELY DONE!!! Very impressive.

And great job today, too. I hope you are feeling better from your head cold (how do you get a cold in the heat?)

Have a great day. I really think I am going to come watch the TOU marathon if I can. I was going to pace Teena the last 10 miles, but she is not running it anymore, bummer.

Didn't you quit sniffing glue once before? You must have taken it up again.

Looks like you picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines.

From JD on Tue, Aug 04, 2009 at 17:54:22 from 166.183.243.41

Thanks Kelli, you're so great! The run run yesterday DID phase me, todays run was a slog for sure.

I don't know what that was yesterday, a head cold? Sinus issues? It's gone now though.

Yes come to TOU! If you don't have other pacing duties, you could always pace me the last few miles, as long as you don't mind basically walking for several miles.

From JD on Tue, Aug 04, 2009 at 17:55:23 from 166.183.243.41

Carolyn - Yeah, I think I did quit sniffing glue a short while ago! LOL!! I forgot. Tough habit to break.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 04, 2009 at 18:10:40 from 71.219.100.174

You will not be walking! Should I just hold up a sign at 16 miles that says "Yell if you are JD"????? Or, if you wore those glasses and looked all cool like that, I might be able to find you.

I like pacing people when I do not have to run the entire race. And we have never met so we would have so much to talk about (and I never shut up....)

From JD on Tue, Aug 04, 2009 at 18:18:09 from 166.183.243.41

I'm considering wearing my yellow tech shirt and painting a custom FRB - JD type logo on it...should be easy to spot.

Oh, and I'll be the one crying for mercy, begging for the DNF van to pick me up!

From auntieem on Tue, Aug 04, 2009 at 20:17:55 from 67.182.145.8

Stop talking that way! You will not be doing any of that. Your training makes me feel like a weenie.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 04, 2009 at 21:00:49 from 71.219.100.174

You so WILL not. Now I have to come run just to save you.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Aug 05, 2009 at 10:51:46 from 24.8.167.243

Please post a picture of the sunflower. It sounds awesome.

From Lysa on Wed, Aug 05, 2009 at 13:17:11 from 76.23.52.240

Good job James and thanks for the visual on the sunflower, thats really cool. No negative thoughts allowed btw!! We are all trying to be as positive as we can! Ive got 3 days to only think happy thoughts..I know i can, i know i can, i know i can...

From JD on Wed, Aug 05, 2009 at 14:32:18 from 64.65.159.206

Me lying on the course in the fetal position whimpering for mercy...what's not positive about that?!? LOL! Thanks for the positive boost.

Carolyn - I'll have to create a Flickr account etc. I'm behind the curve here on the internet. I'll catch up and hopefully post some photos soon. First I'll have to quit sniffing glue though!

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 05, 2009 at 17:23:47 from 71.219.100.174

You should cut it down for the race and carry it---then I will be able to spot you!!

Sunflowers are the coolest weeds!
