"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Late afternoon 8.5 mile trudge along the LPT. Mostly cloudy, 52F, headwind in both directions (seriously!). Felt pretty beat up today, took it real slow.

Do any of you drink "Ensure"? I use it as a recovery drink. It's loaded with protein and carbs and vitamins and such. For some reason I associate Ensure with the elderly, and so felt a little sheepish the first couple of times I bought it, like I was buying adult diapers or something (which I know I'll be doing someday if I'm lucky enough to live that long). Anyway, the stuff tastes great.

I knew a guy that got Boost (I think it's similar to Ensure) for free but hated it, so he gave me something like 5 or 6 cases of it one summer while I was working as a youth director. I had it every morning for breakfast and loved it.

I also know several people who use Boost/Ensure type drinks as fuel during ultras. Who knows, you may find yourself sucked into the, um, eccentric world of ultra running....

From JD on Thu, Feb 05, 2009 at 21:38:07

An ultra might sound appealing to me if I laced my Ensure with hallucinogens...my brain won't let me entertain the thought of running anything longer than a marathon...yet.

From Nevels on Thu, Feb 05, 2009 at 21:50:04

You get the hallucinogens midway through the ultra, and the farther you go, the more funny chemicals you get coursing through your brain. And the best part: it's all (well, at least mostly) legal...

From JD on Thu, Feb 05, 2009 at 23:13:46

Can an ultra runner get arrested for DUI? "But officer, I only had 30 miles...I'm okay to run!"

Hemoglobin's still legal, right?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Feb 05, 2009 at 23:52:54

I don't have anything to say about ultras, but I believe you about the headwinds in both directions. I've sometimes wondered how that's possible but felt like it was happening.

From Nevels on Fri, Feb 06, 2009 at 02:16:50

Hemoglobin is, in fact, still legal; the trick is convincing the cop that's all you're on...

From Snoqualmie on Fri, Feb 06, 2009 at 08:01:29

Sounds like my orthopedic shoe nightmare. lol I have heard of people using it on ultras too.

You crack me up with those blog titles, Mister!
