"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Got out around 11:00 AM. 6-8 inches of fresh snow, 27F, it was still snowing lightly and a little windy when I started, visibility was an issues for a few moments during the first mile. Ran from my house to LPT then out & back. The parkway trail isn't plowed so I broke trail in the fresh powder for 8 miles (4 mi. out/4 back), when I got back onto the hard pavement it was very hard to find my stride as I'd been running in soft snow for the last hour.

Slow pace but good effort given the conditions.

Do you wear gators or something to keep snow out of your shoes? Traction? For some odd reason, I'm extremely interested in this topic now...

Nice running in tough conditions.

I have found that running in 3-4 inches of snow makes a nice cushion. Last winter I did some 2 hour long runs in snow and found that my joints were not as stiff and sore when compared to running on a snow-less path. It was like running on firm pillows.

Sno- No gators, I had little snowballs in my shoes at times. At first I would stop to dig them out, but after awhile forgot about them as my feet were basically soaked after awhile. I didn't really notice until I was done running just how wet my shoes had become. Traction isn't an issues in the snow, but it is on the roads and sidewalks when they've been cleared. When running downhill, I wouldn't dare put on the brakes for fear of slipping.

Will- 3-4 inches would be just about right. The snow I was running in was just a little deep. I had to lift my knees a little higher than I wanted, and push off a little more than I wanted. I consider it good form excersize, and using different muscles. So it was probably good for me.
