2 mile warmup to just before Kossuth and 18th. MGP tempo headed down 18th to one of the housing complexes, turned around there, and headed back down 18th street. 5.5 mile tempo, averaged 7:26 (right on the money for a 3:15 marathon): 7:35, 7:29, 7:27, 7:24, 7:13, 3:41 (7:24). Got a bit too quick for mile 5 (trying to get across the road and around cars), but it's still slow half-marathon pace. Keep those to a minimum and I'll be fine. 1.75 mile cool down home.

Weather was about 70 degrees with 80% humidity at the start. 80 or so with 70% humidity on the way back. November it should be 42-45 on a warmish day, so 3:15 pace should be just fine.

Got a new pair of Newtons (as if I needed them). The same as my dedicated marathon shoe. $80 brand new on Ebay when they are $155 retail. Hard to pass up.

Nice tempo. You've got plenty of time between now and November to extend the tempo at marathon pace. Please excuse my ignorance: is 3:15 the time you need to qualify for Boston?

What are the Newtons like? I've seen them advertised in running magazines but over here, I haven't seen people wearing them.

What's the subject matter of your PhD?

3:15 is an "equivalent" time for a few recent races. I ran a 3:36 for my first one last year, but I am 11 minutes faster in the half marathon, so 3:15 is doable. I need 3:05 for Boston. I would love to try in November, but 7:03 pace is still very different from 7:26 pace, especially given that my recent half pace, although showing excellent improvement this year, is 6:55ish.

I like the Newtons. The price scares people. I think they are great for beginning folks and intermediate folks. You don't see too many pros wear them unless they are sponsored by Newton. I think for some who already have efficient running styles, they may hinder them but I have no basis for thinking that. If you haven't looked at the technology it's quite interesting. It looks goofy, but with drills and doing a bit of reading, the shoe has taught me a lot.

I'm trying the Kinvaras just to see what other companies have been up to. Great shoe for $90, but the forefoot is very squishy and I like a firmer shoe.

My PhD is in English.

Ah, now forget all that running nonsense - what/who are you studying/researching?

I'm big into the poetry malarkey, especially ditties:)

Seriously, I'm a big fan of poetry - proper stuff. I did my degree - many moons ago - in English and philosophy.

From Jason D on Thu, Aug 09, 2012 at 09:06:48 from 24.1.80.94

I've been told not to speak to philosophy and English majors, but I talk to myself way too much to follow the rule!(Philosophy and English undergrad and a good bit of philosophy in my grad work too).

I study theory in which I include philosophy, but I also read contemporary fiction. Right now I am working on fiction after-9/11 (primarily but not exclusively American).

I don't read much poetry. I enjoy it, but never developed a good ear for reading it. I figured you a man of books by the last response to my post on your blog!

Poetry's an acquired taste.

Since reading Cormac McCarthy's oeuvre, I've struggled with the novel. I think McCarthy's, The Road, was the novel to end all novels.

I do, however, enjoy short fiction - especially American offerings; I think the genre still has the scope to surprise and delight.
