This month I've been way too busy.  In addition to my job, house project, and family stuff, last week I had 3 long and full days at a geology convention in Utah Valley, then a short trip to Phoenix, then camping with my daughter's school class.  Now that things are just a bit slower and I'm hoping to get in some more miles, I've caught a cold.  Oh well.  Better sick now than when I'm training for St. George.  And I guess I'll be well rested.  We'll see how I do today in my work's lunch time 5k.  Probably not very well.

Should I sign up for the Wasatch Steeple Chase?  It is in 4 weeks, which means I won't be very well prepared.  But maybe I should just run it for the joy of it and not worry about a lack of training....

RACE REPORT:  DQ => DNF.

This was the 2nd annual DNR (my work place) 5k.  They changed the course from last year but my feeble, oxygen deprived brain took my legs on part of last year's course.  Thus I only ran 2.84 miles (Garmin) and had to Dis-Qualify myself from the cash and prizes (a free paper cup to fill from a jug of water or Gatorade). Doh!  and I would have finally been under 20 minutes!

Well, I hope you start feeling better, soon. Have fun at the 5k

How long is the steeple chase? Do you have to jump over stuff like the horse do?

Oh I forgot to say welcome back we missed you!

Thank you Don and Kathie. The Steeplechase is 17.5 miles with 9,000 feet of elevation (up & down).

"The Wahsatch Steeplechase is equivalent to a marathon, but run on a mountain trail with a vertical gain and loss of approximately 9000 feet in 17.5 miles. The course favors the up- hill runner right from the start, gaining 4500 vertical feet in the first 6 miles. After recovering from the seemingly endless vertical treadmill, you’ll find yourself at the top of a false summit. A greeting by the resident rattlesnake here is common, but your attention will quickly shift to negotiating “the crags” that sport a difficulty rating of 5.4 (Yosemite Decimal System) before reaching the actual summit of Black Mountain.

While the first part of the course favors the uphill runner, the rest of the course is quite the opposite--it’s all down-hill from here! As you descend from the summit to Smuggler’s Notch you’ll find a fully equipped aid station, a picture or item tacked on a tree (to insure you’re on the right trail and to verify that you’ve run the entire course) and 2.5 miles of quad-burning, gut-wrenching, knee-breaking downhill on an overgrown, root-infested single-track trail that leads to Rotary Park at the head of City Creek Canyon.

Now you’ll follow the road for 2 or 3 miles (who’s counting anyway) before moving back to the trail. The trail parallels the City Creek Canyon Road for approximately 3 miles before a short distance of pavement leads to the head of Memory Grove Canyon. Then it’s back to the trail for about 1.5 miles to the finish.

Have Fun!"

I'm out to run my 5k. I'm substituting a can of Mountain Dew for training and good health. (Mountain Dew is really kind of nasty.)

Fly, it's good to hear from you again. As always, you have a great sense of humor about running and racing. Welcome back.

Man that elusive sub 20 5k happened again.:( Great job and I cant wait till you are feeling well and try it. Great job man. And good luck on that steeplechase. It actually sounds like a good race and a excellent challenge.

Welcome back, my friend! We missed you.

Bummer about the 5K DQ..I'm guessing that you must have been in the lead if you took a wrong turn? I thought you had a few 16 minute 5Kers where you worked...they must have been on vacation.

Go for the Steeplechase thingy. Better you than me. You're starting to enjoy those mountain goat runs, aren't you. I hear the downhill is tougher than the ups. Watch out for those rattlesnakes!

The fast guy was there but he was too far ahead to follow. He passed me after I took the short cut. He seemed to be running at a comfortable pace. He didn't seem to be breathing hard, hadn't broken a sweat, and had no problem having a one sided "conversation" with me (I was working way to hard to talk). I think he finished in 17:0?. He did run the course in reverse as a cool down with me.

Dang it, Fly. Did you lead anyone down the wrong path?

"Dang it, Fly. Did you lead anyone down the wrong path?"

OH YEAH. The fast lady followed but she realized the error and tried to make up for it by doing a sort of double back.

Hello Teena.

Is the fast lady still your friend?
