After everythin that has been going on, I wasn't even sure that I would run today. I decided that I would warm up and see how it went. In my first mile of warmup I felt some IT trouble in my left knee but it was not bad. After 4 miles I convinced myself that I was going to be fine.

At the start I didn't want to go with a group that was too fast but I didn't want to be stuck in noman's land either. The first three guys went out really fast and I didn't think I could handle it so I let them go. A fourth guy come up beside me and led me back to the leaders who still were going to fast. I looked back and saw we were destroying the field so I decided to just go with it and see what happened. After 1 mile one guy took off (Mangrum) and another guy dropped off the back so it was down to three in the pack (me,Darda and Winegar: my record against these guys is a combined 0-8 I think). Until about mile 3 we were clipping along together quite aggressively. In the 4th mile they quickly dropped me I could feel myself tensing up as I often do at that stage so I just tried to relax and keep the distance manageable. I came out of my funk at mile 5 and quickly surged and caught a struggling Winegar on a steep downhill.

Things started to get intense here. Darda was surging but I ran really tough to claw my way back to him over the next mile. From there on out I just pulled him along as I tried to catch the leader. I felt like I had him on the ropes the whole time even though he was on my shoulder. The course gets really hilly at the end and started to open a little gap but he didn't give up. He chased me all the way to the line but I had a strong finish to beat him by 6 seconds. Mangrum beat us by 40 seconds (he had that gap from about mile 5 onwards).

The course tool says ridiculous thing about my race, but I take them with a grain of salt.

Nice race...Ben Mangrum is a big competitor and has been training well. We have trained together several times this winter and he is in good shape. He and I have a frinedly rivalry.

Wow! Excellent job. A near PR. I think you've got a sub 2:30 marathon in you easy.

Oh, hi Sean. I was just talking about you on Rattletrap's blog. :)

Great job! I really enjoyed your report. That's a tough course, with those long hills in the second half. Congratulations!

A great time and 2nd place in a race you didn't think you could run- sounds like a successful day to me. Nice work.
