I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

We renewed our gym memberships, so I decided to head over for some late night climbing on the treadmill. I ran 30 minutes on the 15 percent grade at mostly 15:00 per mile, with four one-minute intervals at 10:00.

I ran my usual three-mile night loop. One of the roads is under construction, so the bike lane I usually run in is full of cars now. I improvised and ran in the construction zone.

More treadmill climbing. Nice and steady--no intervals tonight.

(Nearly) midnight run. I ran half a block past our house to make it a 5K.

Well, I seem to have fallen behind in my blogging the way I've fallen behind in my running. I've updated the miles for each day this week, as well as a comment or two about each run, so I guess I'm up to date now. I'll try to do better going forward.

Anyway, I got a reasonably early start this morning and headed over to Corner Canyon for what I think might be my first mountain bike ride in the past couple of weeks. Which is too bad, because I've rediscovered lately that I really like mountain biking.

I rode a route I've been wanting to try for a while: Hog Hollow to Jacob's Ladder to Ghost Falls to Canyon Hollow to Rush to Clark's Trail to Hog Hollow. Try keeping that straight. It was a good ride, with about 3,000 feet of climbing, all of it rideable on the single speed. But it was shorter (in time and distance) than I expected. I had budgeted 3 hours of ride time this morning, but I was done in just under two hours (elapsed, not riding).

Anyway, I'm happy to be in double digits for my running miles this week. Maybe I'll try to get out for another short run this evening and put myself over 15.

EDIT: No run tonight, but I did get out for another ride with my brother. Hooray for mountain bikes!
