I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

After spending the morning with Catherine at the Desert News 10K, I got out for an evening run in the mountains. I guess you could say I'm cramming for Speedgoat. I know it's too late, but still . . .

The view to the north from Big Baldy.

Anyway, out and back from Battle Creek to the Big Baldy summit. I was pleased that I ran every step of the way, but after reviewing the file I'm not sure that was as much of an accomplishment as I thought it was. Still, tired legs and whatnot.

Also, I met Peaks out on the trail. It's funny how many FRBers I run into in real life. Small world when you're running in Utah, I guess.

The question I'm face with now is what to do for the rest of the week. Do I try to log some more vert tomorrow and then shut it down for the week? Do I take an easy day and squeeze in one last mountain run on Wednesday? Or do I just pull the plug now and hope for the best? No matter what I do, I suspect Saturday could easily be one of my top 5 Worst Days Ever. But if there's anything I can do to mitigate that, it would be great.

hahaha. yeah...cramming doesn't seem to work the same in ultra running as it does for test taking for some reason. Be careful with that...Cody crammed for moab and he couldn't run for 3 months after that. Which is just to say, don't be too macho to pull the plug or go easier during the day if you're going to hurt yourself ...that's my opinion anyway.

Are you going to try to make it to Kings peak in August again this year? That's the more important and prestigious event anyway...you should focus your training more on that, just use speedgoat as a training run :)

That is a steep trail. Nice work running all the way up. I wouldn't do anything serious after today. Just get in some nice easy runs to keep your legs fresh.

One of my friends that did Wasatch 100 and Speedgoat last year said that SG wrecked her more than Wasatch. Ha. It should be a fun race.
