I was a competitive cyclist for years. In 2009, after racing in the Tour of Utah, I decided I had plateaued as a cyclist--I could continue to improve, but I wouldn't break through to a new level. So, I started looking for a new challenge.

I thought that challenge would be mountain biking, but I'm a terrible bike handler. I married Catherine in January 2010 and a couple of weeks later I entered the SLTC Winter Training Series with her. A couple of weeks after that I decided I'd like to run ultras, so I signed up for a couple of 50Ks to get started.

Those first races came and went, with varying results. I was looking forward to running more and possibly pushing into the longer distances, but I injured my knee in June 2010 and I've never been consistently healthy since.

I started law school in August 2010, which meant less time for training. In June 2011, Baby Elliott was born, which meant even less time for training. But she's worth it.

Baby Nora joined us in October 2013, with the same effect on training as Elliott (who, incidentally, is no longer a baby).

I (finally) finished school in April 2014 and now I'm an evil corporate lawyer in Salt Lake. I have no illusions that I'll ever get back into the shape that I once was, but I'm perfectly at peace with that. I still have many goals to accomplish and many years in which to do it.

After taking my (thankfully drama-free) property final, I ate some pizza, spent a few hours studying civil procedure (only one final to go) and then went home to great ready for a workout. I was going to cross train, but there was a break in the gloom and drizzle and I just couldn't resist the chance for a quick trail run. Out and back from Battle Creek to Dry Creek: six miles and about 1100 feet of vert.

I decided to run because my knee felt fine, but it was pretty unhappy by the end of the run. And it was sore and a little stiff all evening. But as I write this (the morning after), my knee feels pretty good. I'm not sure what to make of that. But I do wonder whether I should seize the opportunity to roll my SP50 registration over till next year. I want to race, but I don't want to run if it's only going to be a miserable experience. Thoughts?

Well, there is a monster difference between uncomfortable knee at 6 miles and then having that happen and having to try and either push through or DNF. I ran 30+ miles on a very painful ITB in my first 50 miler and I would never do that again or suggest that anyone else do it.

How is the attempt to move to a midfoot strike coming?

I agree with Jun. I ran my first marathon with bad ITB pain and it took me 2 months to recover from that. I did something similar running in Bryce Canyon. I will never try and push through something like that again. The hard thing is ocnce you start the race your competitive juices will start flowing and it will be tougher to make the decision to quit.

I would take a few weeks off and then see if it gets any better. If not then I would worry.

You guys are right--I definitely don't want to push too hard and make things worse than necessary. Fortunately I have a plan. And a backup plan.
