Personal:

Yes, I am a Virginia Tech Hokie.  I pretty much live and die with VT football, so hide the pups indoors this fall if the season goes south.

I grew up in NJ, competed in middle school XC, was primarily a 400m sprinter (& XC) in h.s., and an 800/400m mid-distance runner at Virginia Tech.  Graduated VT with an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and currently am involved with the youth.

This blog is dedicated to my family and friends.  I have 2 (er 3, sorry Tambo!) wonderful sisters and 2 very supportive parents.  Kim is a Graphic Designer in D.C., and at one time rode and trained horses; Melissa is an English Lit teacher at an all-girls h.s. in NJ, in addition to being the XC/track coach.  She really likes comma splices.  Tammy is an Elementary Teacher and a crazy good soccer/basketball athlete, lives across the block from my parents, and is very funny.  All 3 have run at least one marathon.  I believe Tambo has run more marathons than I have.  I am ok with that.  I am very proud of them all.  Oh yeah, also 2 screwball huskies, Apollo and Zeus.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.  It knows that it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed.

Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up.  It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle, or it will starve to death.

It doesn't matter if you are a lion or if you are a gazelle.  When the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

Total Distance

19 miles, on the renowned ski jump that is the St. George marathon course.  Encouraging run today, maybe the micro-fracture is in the past.  Ran w/ Mike Schramm (Stacy & Bill also in the mix).  First 15.5 miles flew by (~7:08 ave), just talking and enjoying the morning.  Then 2 miles at 5:55 & 5:53 (~MP along that particular segment of the course), and a quick 5:20 last mile.  Legs feeling good this evening, we'll see tomorrow.  Probably the calm before the storm.

80+ miles this week, and more miles at MP or LT pace during next weekend's long run.

What does LT mean? And can you recommend a really good pedometer? I've never met one that was consistent enough.

From EricHokies on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:09:07

Complex question. In general, LT means, 'Like Totally'.

"How fast today coach?"

"Like, totally."

Melis, LT is an acronym for 'lactate threshold'. I had typed-up a more detailed response about LT pace, then read the following:

http://www.time-to-run.com/theabc/lactic.htm

So in short, I'm not entirely sure at the moment on the lactate topic. The traditional response for LT pace is, ~10-15/30 seconds slower than your current 10k/5k race paces.

Pedometers - you could probably teach me! I haven't had any experience with them.

No pedometer? How do you know how far you are going then? Do you run with a really long tape measure?

LT = Long Tapemeasure

Melis - some days circuits on the track, some days mileposts, some days on an already familiar or predetermined course, and other days just based on perceived effort. On those days based on intuitive feel, I attempt to understate how fast or how far I've gone.

In place of a pedometer you may also look into a Garmin. Then you can buy your nice bro one! You should do it!!

Or you could both try favoriterun.com It's free and pretty accurate :) Well at least I find it pretty effective.

Miss Mal - Many thanks! I'll explore that site this weekend.
