Also, growing up my neighbor, who was about 8 years older than me, was a superstar in high school with a 4:15 1600m in the early 80s. So I had some good role models.

Warmup

1.39 mile warmup in 11:46
Supposed to be 2x2 min @ 1/2 marathon pace, but I ended up running alongside one of the top runners on his jog while I was cruising at my 1/2 marathon pace and we ended up running the rest of the way back, thankfully slowing to a more comfortable 7/mile.

Race

Resolution Series 5k in 18:20 (/mile)

The course is long, so it was actually 18:55 for about 3.22 miles. I hit the lap button on the Garmin when it got to 3.11, and I had almost 200 meters to go on the track. Crazy. I wish they would get the course fixed.

10th over all, first master (although 1st and 3rd overall were both masters runners who were bumped from division awards). I was only 44 seconds behind Salazar, which is probably the closest I've ever finished to him. Age is catching up with him as I continue to move forward.

It was a perfect day, sunny, no wind and about 40 degrees. I got out a little slow. I assumed that with the track start I would naturally be a little too fast, but when I checked my pace after abou 1/2 mile I was at 6:02 pace and I wanted to be at least 5:55 if not faster. Thank God for the Garmin, I was able to monitor my pace and know that I needed to step it up.

Second mile I took advantage of the downhill in the first half to drop to 5:50 for the split through 1.55. I was in 13th at the halfway point but moved up to 10th by the finish. There was another guy 4 seconds ahead of me, and a group of 4 more guys just another 10 seconds up from that. Next year!

Last mile I gradually worked on a couple guys just ahead of me. One of them I never caught, but the two of us moved up and passed 3 other guys, including one younger runner who has been faster than me ever since injuries caused me to miss several years of running and get completely out of shape.

Unfortunately, I don't get to do the series this year. I will miss half the races. I'll decided in March whether to race the 20k or marathon pace the 20 mile. It will be only 4 or 5 weeks before the marathon, so i'll have to be careful.

Good to see Mike there, who finished in 19:34, which would be around 19:00 for a true 5k. No Carl or Preston, or Darrin.

What trails do you run around here?

From DLTheo on Fri, Jan 06, 2012 at 14:43:58 from 76.28.161.119

Mostly I run on the trails around Weyerhaeuser campus and on Military Road. Sometimes I run out 336th to Celebration Park and then run on the BPA out to and past the aquatic center.

From Steam8 on Fri, Jan 06, 2012 at 23:02:21 from 166.70.55.77

Your blog and Rattletrap's are just depressing. You two are so dang fast and in such great shape! :(

I use to live in Federal Way and DesMoines with my sister about 20 years ago. Weyerhaeuser Way and Military Road are beautiful areas....well, all of Seattle is beautiful! My sister lives right by the Aquatic Center and used to run on the BPA trail all of the time until she hurt a tendon about a year ago. I used to go on walks with her on the BPA when I would fly up and visit her. You must live close to my sis! She is flying down here for the weekend. I'll have to show her your blog!

@Steam - Wow, small world! I don't actually live in Federal Way, but I work there. There are some nice areas to run, lots of green trees! I'm out there every day at lunch time, probably have seen your sister, if I knew who she was.

16.1 miles in 2:06:56 (7:53/mile)

Man, this was a hard run. I put the miles in the blog as 'Easy Miles', but there was nothing easy about it. Where's the "slow by painful" category?

First, I was having some GI distress by the 2nd mile (where's the picture RattleTrap put up a few weeks ago about the runs?). Then, my legs were just sluggish throughout the run, but especially over the last 4 miles my quads were aching. 16 miles shouldn't be this hard. It's a long way from here to 26.2. I brought a water bottle with me, but it's still out there somewhere. I stashed it around mile 6 and forgot to get it on the way back. Maybe next week.

Nice long run! Are you training for any races coming up?

From DLTheo on Tue, Jan 10, 2012 at 15:14:03 from 155.130.107.41

Not right away. I had planned on a couple winter races in February and March, but my scheduled changed and I won't be able to do either of them. My next race may be the Eugene marathon at the end of April.

Well, I failed to get up in time to get a morning run in. I guess I'll post pone that until tomorrow. Sill plan to get in 10 at noon.

OK, I did get out for the 10 miler. I decided to make this an easy week instead of ramping up. My quads have just been so sore and fatigued that it didn't make sense to try to increase right now.

Kind of a weird run, I just ran in circles, literally. It was an easy, slow run on the trails, but still hurt. It amounted to 5 loops of between 1.1 and 1.7 miles, with a little extra on each end.

That might be a possibility. I heard from Carl and it sounds like he will be up for a long run, too. I think he is available in two weeks.

12 mile progression run in 1:26:40 (7:14/mile)

Ok, time to get serious here. Time to start putting in some serioud mileage. Marathon is only 3 1/2 months away. It may be cold. It may be snowing. But no more time to sluff.

Today's run felt good. Last week being short and easy helped a lot. It's nice to run without pain for once. The progression was pretty easy, never felt like I was running really hard. I gave myself 2 miles of warmp and a mile of cool down, so 9 miles of progression running. The plan was to start out around 7:30/mile and drop 5-10 seconds per mile. It worked out pretty well in spite of some hills and a headwind in the second half.

Easy 3 in the snow in 25:16 (8:25/mile)

Lots of snow (for here), about 6 inches and still falling. It didn't matter which direction I went the snow was hitting my face. I will have to find something to protect my eyes for my noon run if it is still snowing like this. My face is still frozen.

Splits: 8:52 - 8:20 - 8:04.5

 Noon

7.06 miles in the snow in 57:09 (8:05/mile)

Conditions are pretty challenging today. Only one road had been plowed. The park I ran through had at least a foot of snow and I got to blaze a new trail through it. Traffic was fairly light, but seems like there were always cars in the way at the wrongest times. Overall things went pretty well, but just before I got off the last road a truck came towards me and I had to jump off into the piled snow on the side. Unfortunately the truck was close to the edge of the road and sprayed me with slush. Yuck. With less than half a mile to go all of a sudden my legs were soaked.

I had the same problem with the snow in my eyes today. They were more like tiny ice crystals than snowflakes. Still fun to be out there though. I normally take 2 days off before a race, but I may have to run tomorrow if it's still like this.

From DLTheo on Wed, Jan 18, 2012 at 12:46:50 from 155.130.107.20

yeah, and here it was right around 32 degrees, so the flakes were just on the verge of melting. I hope it all melts before your race Saturday.

From Steam8 on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 00:15:23 from 166.70.55.77

Oh how I hate the slush after a snow storm! I have been sprayed more times than I can count and always glad to make it home in one piece with frozen, wet toes! Great time running in the snow!!

From DLTheo on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 10:27:18 from 76.28.161.119

Yeah, slush is the worst. Snow is fun, but slush is like big piles of water just waiting to soak my shoes.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 10:33:55 from 24.18.125.122

It is nasty out there this morning. I thought about running for about 2 seconds and decided to pass. The walk to work was sloppy enough in my big 'ol boots.

AM:

Easy 3 in 28:15 (9:06/mile)

I think this is the slowest I've ever run 3 miles in my life. At least since grade school. No worries, though. The conditions were crummy - snow, slush, water, ice. The snow was that kind that is a few inches deep and has a layer of ice across the top of it, so when you step on it your foot crashes through it and then you have to lift the foot back up and out. Hopefully it will be better in the afternoon.

Splits: 10:12 - 8:58 - 9:06

Noon:

So far conditions are better than this morning. This might be because I stayed on more main roads that were pretty clear of snow and slush. It's not snowing anymore. Instead we have freezing rain. The nice thing about freezing rain is that it doesn't really make your clothes very wet. The bad thing is that it hurts when it pelts your ears, or your nose, or your cheeks. Those who've seen me run probably know that I run with my mouth open. Periodically I would get little bits of ice in my mouth.

By midway into the workout conditions were definitely getting worse. The ground was turning whiter, even on the busier streets, and it was getting slipperier.

I'm going to file this workout away for when I need mental toughness in the late stages of the marathon.

2.33 mile warmup to the track in 19:03 (8:11/mile)

4x1 mile @ moderate pace with 1/4 mile recovery  jogs between. I did two loops around PLU loop as the roads were fairly clear and not much traffic. The splits weren't as fast as I'd want if it were dry out. But, given the conditions, and I only wanted a moderate workout anyway, this was pretty good. I probably would've been looking for around 6:10 or so if it had been dry.

Conditions are improving a lot. All of the busier roads are pretty good for running now, although the shoulders and walkways are still buried so there's no place to go if cars are coming from both directions.

Splits: 8:57 - 7:53 - 8:22

Ick. The rain has started to come down pretty hard and mix with the snow, so it is a big sloshy mess out there! Still cold, too, at 34 degrees. I was soaked by the end. Kinda fun, though.

It was a little spooky running down tree-lined roads with big chunks of ice crashing down all around me from 40 feet up.

15.2 miles in 1:55:18 (7:35/mile)

I felt surprisingly good today. Weather wasn't as bad as predicted. I did get rained on a bit, but wasn't soaked by it. The 30 mph winds never materialized, just a couple gusts. Legs felt good. The roads have improved a lot and most of the time there is a thin shoulder now. Temp was 40 degrees. Lots of water and slush on the sides of roads and on corners.

On the way back I felt good enough at 12.5 to add an extra loop in Pleasant Valley, which adds about 1.2 miles. Finally getting my weekly mileage up. Next week should be mid-70s and I nned to get 17 or 18 in for the long run.

On the plus side, the first five miles were pretty good.

Today was a good day. Due to a lot of pain in my legs over the last few weeks I've decided to back off this week in intensity, but not mileage. Oh yeah, I accepted the job offer I got on Monday. Still kind of reeling. I spent all day thinking, praying, talking with my wife and others to try to make up my mind. I decided to work at home so I could just focus on it, but then the power went out and I had to go in. We were on vacation so I did not run much. Plus, my legs need a break for they do break.

Yesterday we drove from Vancouver, WA down to a town just south of Fresno, CA - about 14 hours of driving. We stayed with my cousins the Wilgenburgs on their farm, so I did my run next morning by running laps around their small 70 acre farm. Each lap a varied something so it was entertaining, and I got in 5 miles pretty easily. The workers were out in the field but I stayed out of their way for the most part.

7.36 miles in Anaheim, CA in 54:53 (7:28/mile)

After 3 days at Disneyland we decided to sleep in, get some workouts in and go into the park later. So, I took the opportunity to explore a paved bike path along the Santa Ana River that I've never been able to use. Our usualy hotel is more than 3 miles from the entrance to the trail so not worth using. This time, however, it was only about 2 miles to the trailhead. It's a nice trail. Very flat, runs along the river, which is really a man-made canal I'm pretty sure. Bikers, runners, walkers. One homeless guy who was sleeping under one of the overpasses. I didn't notice him until on the way back, around 9:30 or so. I wanted to say, "maybe you're homeless because you sleep in until 9:30 on a workday!", but I didn't.

My legs were definitely stiff and heavy at first, and never really loosened up much, but I still managed to get in a decent pace.

But, I stopped to stretch for a minute and that helped, so I decided to tack on the other 5. I decided to do my interval workout on the trails today. That should slow me down a bit and also soften impact so that I won't be in so much pain afterwards. I did 4x 1mile with increasing speed. I started with about marathon pace or slightly faster and took 10 seconds off each one, or so was the plan. So, I wanted to do 6:40, 6:30, 6:20, 6:10. What I did was:

6:46, .25 mile recovery
6:30, .3 mile recovery
6:17, .35 mile recovery
6:11, .40 mile recovery

Only the last one was really hard, as expected. I tried to do a couple 1/2 mile intervals at under 6/mile pace, but couldn't make it on the first one so I called it quits.

11:50 recovery of 1.25 miles (9:28/mile). I was crawling again over the cooldown. My legs were aching pretty painfully for the next couple hours and then eased up. In the evening I didn't feel too badly.

Bummer! What brought on all this pain? Did I miss something on your blog? I hope you can get back in the groove soon. Eugene is right around the corner.

From DLTheo on Fri, Mar 02, 2012 at 12:33:28 from 76.28.161.119

The groin pull has been going on for 2 or 3 years now, but doesn't really bug me too much except during the first couple miles, so a three mile run doesn't give me much chance to warm up.

The bigger problem has been my quads have been aching, and my left hamstring has been tweaked a bit. These have bugged me off and on over the last year or more, but particularly in the last six weeks or so. Hopefully backing off will take care of it.

Thanks Steam! It's not so bad, I just have to make some adjustments and settle for a slower goal time at the Eugene marathon next month is all. Unless something miraculous happens over the next six weeks I don't think a 2:55 will be there for me.

14 miles with 10 at an easy pace and the last 4 at marathon pace in 1:44:56 (7:27/mile).

Not too bad. I was a little tight and sore during the first 10, but overall it went pretty smoothly. When I jumped into the last 4, as expected the 1st mile went easily. The 2nd was dissapointing and I was concerned that I couldn't even handle 7/mile. In fact I was running just slower than 7 about halfway through it. I forced myself to speed up, though the pace felt harder than marathon pace. The good news is that the 3rd and 4th miles went much better. I suspect that second mile may be slightly uphill.

From DLTheo on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 17:00:05 from 155.130.107.20

Hi IJR, it was OK. It's a little slower than I want, but for now I'm taking it. I've been having a lot of trouble with pain in the legs, so just glad to be running and feeling so-so for now.

Kind of a meandering run on the trails - easy 5.15 in 41:14 (8:01)

It was so nice to just run and feel normal. It was a beautiful, sunny, low-50's day. Short sleeves and shorts and felt nice! Spring is a-comin'! No pain in the quads, which is a nice change. Tomorrow I will spoil it all with a track workout, but at least I've had a few nice days. Hopefully the workout will go better tomorrow and I will recover more quickly, too.

Normal is good!

I'm trying to decide if I want to go and trash my quads tomorrow too. It's supposed to be a 20 mile run but I think I'm going to reduce it to 10/run and 20 bike and probably all inside since we're supposed to get 2-4 inches of rain tomorrow :-)

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Mar 09, 2012 at 12:21:46 from 98.247.27.122

Nice! I was staring out the window all day yesterday wishing I was out there running instead of working. Today turned out pretty nice though, at least it wasn't wet or windy.

From DLTheo on Fri, Mar 09, 2012 at 21:06:39 from 76.28.161.119

Yeah, it was perfect yesterday. Today wasn't bad either. Glad I got it done before the rain came a couple hours later.

IJR, wow, that's a lot of rain in 24 hours. I hope you make it work. Probably smarter to do more on the bike.

I had a great workout today. Things are definitely going in the right direction. Paces are picking up, having less pain during and after workouts, feeling decent on recovery days. Best of all, running is enjoyable again instead of a burden. I'm actually looking forward to trudging through 23 miles on Sunday. My strategy of backing off a bit has helped. Not so much the running, but the attitude has backed off.

Today was also the debut of a new pair of running shoes. I figured 1700 was enough miles for the previous pair. They will be demoted to backup shoes for a while.

Warmup

2.17 miles on the PLU Loop as warmup in 17:06 (7:52/mile)

Workout

5x800, 1x1000 @ 5k pace with 400m recoveries

I was shooting for around 2:57-2:58, but figured the first couple would be slower. I love it when the splits come out fairly even like this. I intentionally sped up the last 2, and did 1000m on the last one to make it an even 5k for the workout. I finished feeling like I could've gone more, but that I was tired enough - just the way you want to feel at the end of a track workout.

23 miles in 2:55:12 (7:37/mile)

Amazing how much things can change in a couple weeks. I'm feeling a lot better, stronger, enjoying running more. Today's 23 went smoother than the 21 two weeks ago. It was cold, around 42 degrees, with an occasional shower of rain here and there. Just about perfect for a long run. I just missed the hail that came this afternoon.

The big issue last time was that I ran low on sugar after about 17 miles and was forced to slow down a lot. Didn't happen today. I kept up a better pace throughout and managed to finish strong.

The only difficulty was that my feet were starting to want to cramp up starting around 15 miles. I had some salt tables, but had just emptied my water bottle, and had to wait 4 more miles to get to my next bottle. I worked out ok. The cramping nevery really materialized, I took salt at 19 and 21 miles, and the last couple miles the cramping was completely gone.

IJR, I'm running the Eugene Marathon next, at the end of April, shooting for 2:58. By the way, the only way to learn the difference between low-sugar, low-salt, etc. is to suffer through them a few times. Maybe you're better off not knowing ;)

Good run. I wish it felt easier than this to run at mp for only 6 miles, albeit while fatigued. Still, I held the pace I wanted, more or less. The only concern I have is that the pace doesn't feel natural to me. I really have to focus to stay on pace or I will slow down. That may be because I'm a little fatigued from the previous week of training, though. No doubt that won't be a problem after 3-4 weeks of tapering.

Nice run D,

Can you remind me what your next race is going to be?

Also I was wondering if BSF is similar to CBS (Community Bible Study). They have CBS down here (mostly women's study) but they did have a men's version for a while that I went to. It was great!

My next race is the Eugene Marathon on April 29th - less than 5 weeks away!

I'm not familiar with CBS, but they could be similar. BSF is based out of San Antonio, although there are more than a thousand classes all over the world. It wouldn't surprise me if there were similar styles of studies in Texas.

BSF involves daily study, weekly small group discussions, teaching and fellowship. It's a pretty awesome study. We're finishing up Ephesians this week. In fact I'll be teaching on Monday night on putting on the full armor of God.

Energywise I felt good. My left quad was acting up during the first 3 or 4 miles, so I decided to do 10 instead of 12. I actually felt just fine after four miles, though.

My right hip, which bothered me a little bit last weekend and on Monday started to flare up quite a bit after this run. So much so that I could barely walk on Friday. The problem is not right in the hip joint, but in some muscles or tendons just below it. When they swell up and get painful it pulls the joint out of joint a bit. I iced a lot, took it easy, didn't run, added some vitamin I (as RT calls it) and by Saturday I felt much improved.

Yesterday I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to run at all today. I decided my hip was improved enough to give it a go. Felt good on the run, and it seemed to help loosen things up a bit, too. Gorgeous, sunny day in the mid-50s.

Phew, that was tiring!18 miles with 10 at normal pace and the last 8 at marathon pace.

I wish marathon pace felt a little easier, but I know it will after a few weeks of tapering.

Quite a turn around for the hip in just a few days. Still sore, but it just feels like sore muscles now. I'll give it some good icing later today, but while I'm running it doesn't affect me at all.

The first 10 miles I did my usual relaxed pace that, for whatever reason, I spend the whole time thinking "How am I going to run a minute a mile faster than this?" Once the marathon pace part starts it tends to work out. It still felt harder than I want it to.

I managed to avoid the mistake of the past two times of running too fast the first mile and then too slowly the 2nd mile. I got on pace and held it pretty consistently until the last mile. Somehow the last mile felt better and easier than the previous two, even though a lot faster. I wish the last mile of the marathon go like this one did, 26 second drop!

It's true. I do all my best thinking, praying and meditating while running. Tell them if they had anything between their ears they'd be able to think, too :)

A few years ago I memorized the book of Romans and I often recite that on my long runs.

Hills - This consisted of 10 100m (approx.) strides, but instead of doing them on a track I ran them on a trail with a slight uphill grade of probably around 2%. These were just hard strides, not all out sprints. 1.35 miles total.

Distance is approximate. It was pouring down rain, so I didn't want to stand out in it while waiting for my Garmin to find satellites. After doing my warmup exercises under cover it still was ready, but I was, so I went ahead and started hoping it would figure it out soon enough. This often works. This time, I checked it after a minute and it was doing the dreaded "Have you traveled hundreds of miles since your last run?"Oh well. Short story long, I ran about 5.3 miles easy on the trails in the pouring rain, and mud puddles.

I celebrated my 41st birthday today by running 11 miles with a 6 mile tempo run. 50 degrees, a few light sprinkles of rain here and there. It didn't start to pour and hail until my cool down, thankfully.

Warmup

2 miles easy (7:45 - 7:26)

1 mile with 2x2 min @ 1/2 marathon pace (6:21,6:30 pace)

Workout

6 mile tempo in 38:25 (6:24/mile) over flat courses. I went out a little too quickly, running around 6:12 pace through the first half mile or so. I eased up and settled into a better rhythm. On the last mile I meant to run faster, but at .78 miles I was still at 6:30 pace. So I launched into a kick that brought the pace down to 6:18. That's about a 1:14 (5:35 pace) the last .22. Wish I could do that in the marathon! I'll be happy with a 1:30 over that last .22.

It didn't. I had to bag it early on. I left my Garmin at home so I can't update the specifics, but by 6 miles I decided to call it quits. I took a shortcut home and ended up with 8 slow miles. Today I felt much better. Should've done it today, but no time. I'll plan to do this workout on Friday or Saturday.

First day at my new job! I had meetings all morning, right up until noon, and then my boss was stopping by at 1 or so to see me, so I couldn't do the 9 miles I was planning on doing. Instead I settled for 6, and decided spur of the moment to run the 5th mile at mp. I didn't have my Garmin today, so I was running based on a familiar course.

21 miles, including 10 @ marathon pace (or faster).

There, I did it. I couldn't do it last Sunday, but today my legs were up for it. I was more scared of this run than I should've been.

It was a perfect day for it. Sunny, beautiful day. It was about 52 at the start and 65 by the end. There was a very cold breeze in the beginning and it took me most of the first mile to get warmed up in my shorts and short sleeves and carrying a bottle of mostly ice (frozen Gu2O).

The first half is always a challenge for me mentally. I spend most of it thinking how it is more tiring that it should be only 3 or 4 miles into it. But then it only gets very gradually harder and I still had plenty left for a fast last mile. I'm not sure how this translates into an actual marathon pace overall. Last time I was able to run 6:50 on this run, but in the marathon I average 6 seconds/mile slower, although I did manage to hold 6:50 through 23 miles. I guess if I run this time the same way I'd still manage 6:50 pace which would be a nice PR and a sub 3-hours. I doubt I'll be able to run a 6:24 in the 26th mile, though.

My right knee started bothering me later in the evening. Hopefully it will be nothing.

Hey DL, since your marathon is the same day as the one I'm running, can you tell me your taper plan for the next two weeks? I'm just curious. What is your goal for the race?

From DLTheo on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 10:09:09 from 155.130.107.20

I started my taper last week, though in the past I've usually taken a 4-week taper. I plan to run about 40 miles this week, maybe less. I'm not getting too technical about it. The main thing is that each of my runs will be a little shorter than a couple weeks ago, I'll probably take an extra day off, and I won't run as hard on my workout days. Next week I'll just run short runs leading up to the race, but the day before I usually do 4 miles with one at marathon pace. 12 days to go!

Easy 4 on the trails in 32:08. My right knee has improved since Saturday, but had some sharp pains in the knee cap during the first half mile. Then I stopped to stretch out my quad a bit more and that helped. It still felt a little swollen and there was some tingling going on. Also, couldn't do lunges before the run because of it.

From DLTheo on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 16:21:16 from 155.130.107.41

Me too! My knees are still bugging me, but not as bad. I was able to do lunges before my run yesterday, so that's a good sign.

I hope you don't torture yourself too much on that next run. Only 11 days to go. It takes a few weeks to completely recover from 20+ mile runs.

I misread my training schedule...I am only running 10 MP miles.

My knees are still sore, but not too bad. They seem to hurt worse when I'm running slowly than when I am pushing. I stayed on the trails today, and got in a 4 mile progression run. I meant to start at 6:50 (mp) and cut down by 10 seconds each mile, ending with a 6:20. However, I went out too fast on the first, so decided to run the mp mile last.

1.8 mile warmup. The 2nd mile was in 7:22, just trying to get prepared for the harder running coming.
Splits: 8:15 - 5:52 (7:21/mile)

4 mile progression to MP:

6:45 - 6:28 - 6:18 - 6:57

I ran the last mile too slowly. The pace felt plenty easy, it just didn't work out quite right to slow down to mp. Oh well, still a good workout.

1 mile cool down in 8:06

Strength training. I did a reduced workout today, about 75-80% of usual, with 12 days till marathon.

Looks like a good workout. I'm sure your knees will feel better as you rest them a little coming into the race. You know, I have the same issue about speed. I feel very comfortable running a 7:00 pace (body and legs) but when I run 8:00 pace I always feel choppy and as if it strains my joints and muscles more. My aerobic just won't let me run 26 miles at a 7:00 pace :-( I'M OLD..!!

I'll be on the road today, but next week I will probably stay on the trails most of the time. If it wasn't for this knee thing I'd be pretty optimistic.

My knee is getting worse. It's not an impact issue. Pounding doesn't phase it. The pain is in the upper part of the knee cap and seems to be more of a stabilizer issue. As long as I am running straight it isn't much of a problem, even downhill. In fact, uphill is worse on it than downhill. Anything that makes me use it slightly differently than just a normal running gait, however, and sharp pains go shooting across the patella. Lateral stepping, stepping up onto or down off of a sidewalk, stepping on a rock, all set it off. The knee feels like its is buckling and it takes a few steps to recover. On the plus side, it does seem to improve after I warm up. It  took about 5 miles, and then it didn't hurt as much and did have as many stabilizing issues. Also, faster running seems easier on it. I picked it up a bit on the last mile and it felt ok.

Due to my knee problems I took Saturday and Sunday off. Today's run was pretty good. I wish it were perfect, but didn't expect it. The first mile was great. On the second, I had a little bit of pain once or twice, but nothing compared to last week. It did make me more cautious, though. The 3rd mile felt fine again. Mostly there is just the feeling of some swelling in and around the patella. If I ran the marathon feeling like I did today I don't think it would slow me down. I'd be concerned that I might have problems in the last few miles, though, as the quads became exhausted. Hopefully I will keep improving through the week. Weather in Eugene is supposed to be a high of 64, but 45 for a low the night before. Sounds nice.

You are one stubborn runner, Scott! :)

If I were your coach, I'd have you do this:

No running until Saturday. Walking is OK, so long as it is pain-free.

On Saturday, do a short, easy run... Just to "shake the legs" a little.

Absolutely none of the running you do this week is going to improve your fitness; your body needs more time to adapt for any benefit.

Running through an injury at this time has great potential to make the injury worse. You are risking a poor marathon performance, a DNF, or a DNS.

You know your body the best, but sometimes it's good to hear from an outsider. Good luck in Eugene, I'm praying for you!

From I Just Run on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 07:36:48 from 67.79.11.242

I struggle with the last week of training before a marathon too. Is the statment "Absolutely none of the running you do this week is going to improve your fitness" really true?

From JG on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 07:50:25 from 71.57.246.108

Scott, I have battled knee issues the last 3 months, and while it has improved, I had big concerns before Boston. At the expo, I had KT tape put on both knees, and it really seemed to help! I had never used it before, but heard people swear by it! Anyway, I think it helped & might be worth considering ... I have since bought some & plan on using it on all my long runs!

IJR, I tend to agree with that statement, you may want to do some light stuff just to keep your legs loose, but rested healthy legs are far more important going into a marathon!

From I Just Run on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 07:57:53 from 67.79.11.242

The RLRF program only call for two runs the week of a marathon. An interval run, which I did on Monday, and another 3 mile run (1 easy and 2 at MP). I'm feeling a little nervous so I'm going to add one more run.

Sorry to jack your blog with my discussion DL..:-)

From DLTheo on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 10:31:54 from 155.130.107.41

Yikes! I could never take a week off and then run a race. If I take more than two days off in a row my legs get all wobbly and it takes several days to get back to normal. :)

Thanks for the advice Carl! I appreciate the feedback. And, I took two days off over the weekend because of your suggestion last week. If you didn't like my 3 miler yesterday you really won't like my run today! I will be taking tomorrow off, though.

From DLTheo on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 10:35:40 from 155.130.107.41

IJR -

Physical improvement comes during recovery, not training. A workout serves only to break down the muscles, causing micro-tears in the muscle fibers. Recovery is where the body builds back a little stronger as a result of the workout. On the other hand, although I won't get physically stronger by running this week, I can detrain by doing nothing. Physically, proprioceptive training is what I am mostly concerned about this week. Essentially, keeping my body aware of how to run.

The biggest reason to run this week for me, though, is the psychological benefit. At this point the battle to conquer Eugene is mostly a mental game, and I need to go into it with confidence. That little 3 miler yesterday helped me out a ton mentally. Before the run I was so anxious about my knee that my stomach was hurting, but since the run I've been a lot more optimistic. Information is good! Now I know a bit more about what my body can handle. I also am finding that my knee is getting better, and probably isn't quite as serious as I feared last week. As it says in The Lore of Running, in order to overcome the Central Governor's desire to quit running you have to have information - about the course and the body.

From Carl on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 13:45:32 from 24.19.78.45

I was pretty sure you wouldn't stop running, Scott. You have a (mostly) healthy OCD desire to run. :)

I bet you could take a week off before a race... if that's what it would take to race the marathon to your best ability. But I understand... You gotta tame Taper Madness, and at least a third of your marathon performance hinges on your mental health and how intelligently you race that day.

I'm glad that my comments helped you rest a little more than you would have. I think we are all going to benefit a lot by using fastrunningblog!

Let me know when you and Mike are getting pizza; I want to come too!

From DLTheo on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 14:30:18 from 155.130.107.20

As I get older my OCD desire gets healthier.

I might be able to take a week off and do fine. I wouldn't want to try it for the first time before a marathon, though. Maybe before a long run, or Sound to Narrows.

You let me know when you and Preston are going for pizza, and Mike and I will join you! Maybe we should meet up at Stortinis, and run on the foothills trail, in that order :)

From Carl on Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 14:33:04 from 24.19.78.45

IJR,

It's a hard concept for us runners to accept: Running does not make you faster. What makes us faster is how our bodies adapt to the stresses of running.

I think it's in the book, LORE OF RUNNING, that talks about how elite runners throughout history often have their best race, even world records, after they were forced to rest from an injury. To this day, everyone is suprised when some athlete who has been "battling an injury" ends up winning a race.

Day off today. I just did an easy walk on the trails for a few minutes to loosen up a bit.

I decided to do a comparison check to see how my fitness compares with my last marathon (Oct. 2010). I used a standard test before both marathons where I run 21 miles with the second 10 at marathon pace. In both cases I ran the exact same courses for both the warm up and the mp part of the run. I ran an average of 6-7 seconds/mile faster than last time, and I had no slow miles this time.

Last time I ran 6:53/mile through 9 miles. In the marathon I ran 6:52/mile through 22 miles, then lost 4 seconds/mile from my average. If I did the same thing this time I'd be running 6:45/mile through 22 miles and then slow up to around 6:49, which would get me under my goal. In fact, I hope to average around 6:48, so it looks like that pace should be reasonably safe for me to target during the race.

I'm sitting in a hotel in Springfield, about 2 miles from Hayward Field, with a lovely view of Best Buy from my window. I went over to the expo around 3:30 to get my packet and shirt. I got to shake Meb's hand and get a picture with him!!! Since the format buttons aren't loading right now I'll have to post the picture later, if I can figure out how. Maybe RT can tell me.

After that I had my wife drop me off at the 21 mile mark of the marathon so I could run over the last few. So I backed up over the foot bridge to around 20.6 and ran until around 25.6 or so. This is the best part of the course. Hopefully I'll be able to appreciate it during the race. I ran the last full mile at mp. It was tough to do, but felt good afterwards to have a little faster running in. I would normally do this run the day before the race, but with my lack of training all week I'm glad to get it in two days beforehand instead. I'll just jog an easy 3 or 4 tomorrow, maybe less, to loosen up.

This is the best my knee has felt in two weeks. I ran in my racing shoes, and also with a knee compressor. Not sure which helped, or both, or just because I'm healing, but had almost no problems with the knee.

One thing about the course I don't like, though I hate to complain as it is such a beautiful course, but the river trail is all concrete sidewalk. I had thought, based on Google Earth that it would be asphalt.Concrete is a lot harder on the knees, or at least it seems like it. Oh well, I'm sure it won't be a big deal when it comes down to it.

Back in '09' Preston and I ran Eugene. We showed up a little late to line up in the front, so we had to run through the crowds of walkers and slower runners. Our first mile was something like 9 or 10 minutes!

We kept our cool and made sure that we didn't try to make up the lost time in just a couple of miles. We stuck to the rule of never running more than 20 seconds faster than your planned marathon goal pace. By the time we hit the halfway point, we had made up the lost time.

This was Preston's first BQ race. Good luck in Eugene. And don't go out too fast!

DNF - Eugene Marathon. 18.74 miles in 2:17:20

My first marathon DNF. It's hard to put so much time and effort into preparing only to fall short on the day. That's part of the allure of the marathon, no doubt. Everything on the line in one big race. If it was easy we wouldn't do it.

In short, it wasn't my knee injury that did me in. My legs just gave out. The first 9 or 10 miles went well, but starting in the 11th I fell off pace. By mile 14 I felt like I'd already gone 24. My quads were aching, especially in areas where I have had problems before.

I managed to hang on all the way until 18.75 miles. I was going to drop at mile 16 if I saw my wife at that spot. There is a bridge to get back across the river there, and less than a mile to the finish area. However, she wasn't there and I didn't have enough presence of mind to drop out anyway, especially with all the crowds around, cheering. So, I kept going. As I got slower my knees began to hurt, but not in the injured area I've been dealing with the last couple weeks. By mile 18 I was really wishing I had stopped earlier, but I was trapped on the wrong side of the river. I thought about walking back but couldn't fathom the idea. Finally, at 18.75 I came upon another bridge. I knew if I kept going I risked doing more significant damage to my knees. I was already reduced to stopping to stretch, running for a 1/4 mile, then stopping again. I decided finishing on Hayward Field was important enough to keep going. By cutting across there I was saving myself 4 miles of walking.

That walk across the bridge was the hardest walk I ever made. I stopped four or five times along the way, trying to decide if I really wanted to leave the race behind, and almost went back each time. In the end I knew it was the right decision, even though I didn't like the decision.

As for the race, it was perfect conditions. 48 and cloudy, no wind or rain. The sun came out later, but it didn't warm much until at least 11. Meb was the starter, and he mentioned that conditions like this don't come that often, so take advantage.

The marathon asked people to park at one of four nearby locations and take a shuttle to the race. As a result, they didn't have enough shuttles from the headquarters hotel, and there was plenty of parking near the starting area. As it was, I got to the race 15 minutes before it started, and there was a large crowd still waiting to get on other shuttles after me. I decided I didn't have time to visit the bathrooms. As it turned out I could've made it, but I ended up not needing to go. My pre-race diet and hydration strategy worked perfectly.

We start the first 1/2 mile or so uphill. The pace was slow and I was in a crowd. I was also stuck behind the 3:05 pace group, which was going out a little fast. I thought about IJR and RattleTrap during these miles and prayed for them. I figured IJR was at least 16 miles into his race by then.

It took about 3 miles to fully get out of the crowd and to a place where I could mostly run my own pace. The first 9 miles is a loop around south Eugene that then passes right by the starting line on the way out to the Willamette River. It is the most hilly part of the course, and there were  two hills that were significant. Nothing like Big Sur, but enough to let you know you were running up. Both of them were about 1/2 mile long and they were both followed immediately by a downhill run.

During the 5th and 6th miles I met a nice guy from Tulsa who was running his first marathon in 7 years. I asked about OKC and he said it was too windy. Those miles flew by and were my two fastest. Felt good. In the 9th mile we ran uphill for about .6 miles and I was at 7:35 pace at the top, but back down to 7:00 by the end of that mile thanks to the downhill. In the 12th mile I was feeling pretty crummy. I decided if my body forced me to slow below 7/mile I might just back off for a few miles and see if I could still have a strong last 6. Unfortunately, each mile I got slower, hurt more and my knees started to ache. After the 1/2 way mark (in 1:30:56), I knew that I only needed to run a 1:44 to get a BQ. I think I decided I just needed to run under 8:10 to do that. The next mile was an 8:10, followed by a 9:08. I thought I had an 8:45 in there somewhere, but maybe that was the 9:08, midway through.

The 3 1/2 mile walk back was miserable. I walked along the course from mile 23-24. At first there weren't many runners going by me. The winning time was 2:20. By the time I got to mile 24, though, I knew that my running self, if I had stayed on pace, would've just passed my walking self. I got tired of walking through aid stations and cheer zones, so I got off the course after that and made my way back to the school. It was sunny, but still about 50, and I was pretty cold, and was getting slower and slower. I started to limp a little as my right knee become more aggravated. I wasn't sure where my wife would be, since I was 30 minutes past due by the time I got to the school. Thankfully, she was still where we had agreed to meet, which was the first place I looked. It was a very tearful morning, and I couldn't wait to get out of there. Once I got to the hotel room and laid down on the bed and was fine, emotionally, and was fine the rest of the day. If you read this far, you're nuts, but thanks.

Nice race report Scott! Too bad about the DNF though.

I was trying to find out what caused the bonk and leg pain...

Your mile splits look great! I don't think you ran too fast.

What did you eat for breakfast? From a "I don't want to use the porta-potty" standpoint, your diet strategy was perfect, but do you think it provided the energy you needed? How did you refuel on the course?

Did you wear a knee-brace on both knees or just one? Sometimes I wonder if you should wear them in pairs to prevent overcompensation injuries.

Everything could be just due to your knee injury too... mild symptoms could have caused a slowdown that built up to the quad and knee pain.

From Steam8 on Wed, May 02, 2012 at 18:07:56 from 166.70.55.77

I am so sad to hear about your report. I tried to see how you did yesterday, but realized that I didn't know your full name or bib number when I went to look you up. I only know your name is Scott...at least I think it is! ha! That is the one bad thing about this blog is I only know everyone from their nic-name!

How are you feeling today? Have you figured out what caused the bonk? It is so hard to have a disappointing race! I am sorry!!

Sorry to hear you had a rough one. In the end, at least you probably saved yourself a lot of recovery time by pulling out early. Good luck in the sub-3 quest.

Sorry this race didn't work out for you Scott. I was sure you would nail that sub 3 in Eugene. I am really glad to hear that you weren't injured on the course though. When I looked at your updates and saw them stop after the half I was reminded of my experience at the Seattle Rock n Roll Marathon.

Oh Man....!!! This dissipointed me more than my own race!! I was really expecting you to have a really good day. I'm sorry, I know you've worked really hard to get to this point. Hopefully your legs will heal quickly and completly and you'll be back training for that sub-3 soon. I think we should both concentrate on improving the journey to our destination the goal is still there :-)

From DLTheo on Fri, May 04, 2012 at 23:37:09 from 76.28.161.119

@Carl - leg pain and knee pain are common for me. About 8 weeks before the marathon I was having a lot of leg pain, but backing off for a couple weeks took care of most of it.

@Amy - Not so disappointing as what you've been through. No idea what caused the bonk. I guess it was just one of those days.

@SloJoe - Yeah, I am definitely recovering more quickly than usual. The 3 1/2 mile walk afterwards was the toughest part of the race.

@RT - I will be back soon, and hopefully make another go at sub 3 in Portland, or another fall marathon.

@IJR - I think I'm going to try something different for a little while, something less focused on speed. I need the break, at least mentally.

Thanks to the shorter race on Sunday I'm recovering more quickly than usual. My legs are pretty sore, but not like usual.

I was going to go 20 minutes, but then I remembered that I haven't been doing the e-train lately, so that would probably give me a whole new kind of soreness that I didn't need. So, I backed off and stopped at 10 minutes. Afterwards and for the rest of the day my legs felt a lot better.

Good you're back quickly. I'm taking a couple more days off before I start back.

You mentioned your quad stiffness in the marathon. This sounds like the same problem I've had on both of my marathons. I'm trying to figure out how to strengthen them so I don't have this problem after 18 miles. Ha ha...probably just more running...?

From DLTheo on Fri, May 04, 2012 at 23:38:44 from 76.28.161.119

I've been having quad pain and groin pain for a while now. Actually a couple years, off and on. More running seems to make it worse. I'm thinking more strength training will help. Maybe a massage?

From Carl on Sat, May 05, 2012 at 11:59:40 from 216.161.242.12

I think strengthening the hamstrings can help. Runners tend to (relatively) over-develop the quads and under-develop the hammies.

@IJR: If the problem always happens around mile 18, you could be hitting the Wall. To push the Wall further out, you might need to slow down a little for the first 1/2 of the race. The long-term fix is just what you suggested... running more!

I wish this run went great, but my right knee continues to be a problem. Strange, since it was really feeling improved leading up to and during the marathon. I had a theory beforehand that the problem may stem from my new shoes, and I did run in other shoes on Friday, Saturday and in the marathon. Today I ran in the new shoes again, though, and I had knee pain again. I'll try something else next time and see what happens.

First mile was in about 8:03, but I ran a lot more cautiously in the 2nd mile. Quads feeling pretty good. Calves are very sore after the e-train yesterday. I forgot that they work the calves more than running, but the quads less.

Today I ran in my old 1700+ mile shoes and wore a knee sleeve. Had no problems with the knee. I'll try this for a while, and if I can continue to experience no knee pain I will try to go without the knee sleeve next week or later.

After consulting with a marathon maniac/ironman friend of mine I am planning to get back into the saddle quickly with a marathon, but just run it for fun. On the tentative schedule, pending knee recovery, is the Green River marathon on June 2nd.

@Carl, yes to both. Next time I run a marathon for time I don't want Eugene to still be sticking in my mind. Having a successful marathon, particularly if I feel good enough to pick up the pace over the last few miles, will make all the difference in keeping me from psyching myself out. Also, I've been wanting to get into marathon maniacs for a couple years and have just been postponing to run faster marathons. Seems like a good time to try it.

RT, too bad it would be fun to see you there, and enjoy the fish 'n chips with you afterwards.

Scott - I was worried about the same thing going into BigSur after getting cooked in Boston. A low key, no pressure marathon will probably be a really good thing. I'm still trying to see if I can make it to that one somehow. The four of us locals need to do a Foothills pizza and beer run soon. Fridays and Sundays are good for me.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, May 07, 2012 at 17:51:44 from 24.18.125.122

S2N is finally going to have a shirt that doesn't look like a weight watchers logo, but it still reminds me of the Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever album cover.

$35 is a lot of cash to pay for an ugly shirt and a race that isn't long enough to need a water stop. I wish they would do a no-shirt option for $20

From Carl on Mon, May 07, 2012 at 19:25:57 from 24.19.78.45

Mike:

Gotta agree on the ugly T-shirts, but the S2N has a deeper meaning for us long-time runners...

Back before the days of chip-timing and posting race results in real-time on the internet, the Tacoma News Tribune would publish all of the S2N race results in a special section of the newspaper. The S2N was considered the measuring stick that all competitive runners in a large part of the Puget Sound area would use to compare with other runners. It was very prestigious to be published in the "Top 100" of the sports section.

S2N used to be the largest FREE race on this side of the Mississippi River. T-stirts were optional and cost an extra $5-10. The News Tribune was the primary sponsor. You didn't run the S2N for a social cause, you did it to compete!

Now the News Tribune is a minority sponsor, and MultiCare runs the show. It's a fund raiser for the "Center for Healthy Living".

The course was made for a generation of runners that would complain about races that didn't have enough hills. Now everyone wants a flat, fast course.

The Steilacoom Running Club still hosts its annual meeting/dinner on the night of the S2N. This year is the 40th anniversary. I plan to race it this year (though I won't be as fast as other years).

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, May 07, 2012 at 19:47:07 from 98.247.27.122

You make it sound a lot more appealing putting it like that. The S2N was actually one of my first races and I have great memories from it. It's kind of funny that I'm the old guy in our little FRB clique and you're telling me about the good old days :)

I am a member of FSRC and didn't know about this meeting/dinner gig. Communication is not one of their strong points.

From DLTheo on Tue, May 08, 2012 at 11:27:55 from 155.130.107.42

1988 and 1990 were my best years on that course. In 1988 we had a Washington High School team that took 2nd in the team competition, behind a UW team. I ran 44:17 for 12K, which was good for 8th in the high school division and 88th overall.

Two years later, after my Freshman year of college I ran 42:24, placing 32nd overall. The big goal was to crack the top 25 because they always listed the top 25 men and women in the next day's News Tribune. It took them a few days to get all the rest of the thousands of results compiled and reported in a special Sound to Narrows section of the paper. But that day after the race they also had a special section with pictures, stories and a list of top 25. I missed the boat on that one by just a bit.

Now days it's not so competitive, but its still a great race. Last year's shirt was better than in previous years. At least it was technical fabric. But, it is so bright you can see in the dark with it. I miss the days of the free race and $7 shirt.

Glad to hear your knee is better. I was wondering just what the problem might be? I'm sure you've had it checked out before. I know you're a very experienced runner (and I feel embarrassed even asking) but have you examined your stride to see if it might be changed to reduce the pressure on your knee? Since I started running I studied the "Pose" running method. I feel it has helped me take a lot of the shock off my knees. I had problems with bone spurs and just tweaky things but now all of that has gone away. Basically the stride has taught me to land "basically" flat footed with my foot under my body as opposed to heel first and out in front of me. ...Sorry, I don't want to insult you...just thinking :-)

From DLTheo on Wed, May 09, 2012 at 10:18:58 from 155.130.107.20

It is definitely not an insult to suggest ways of getting over injuries :) The whole purpose of this blog is to help one another, after all!

I have looked at stride over the years and made some changes. I tend to have a fairly short stride (170-180 steps per minute) and smooth gliding stride with little up and down movement, as RT or Carl can confirm.

I am suspicious of my shoes and have been running in a different pair the last few days. Also, that hip tightness of a couple months ago is still there and I wonder if that is causing a pull on the knee, or an overcompensation situation.

Not quite as good as yesterday. I made it almost to four miles before any pain in the knee. After that I got a little twinge of pain a few times in the second half, but nothing major. I'm assuming you're wearing your old shoes :-) If I ran 12 miles at that temperature I would have to drink about a gallon of water...how did you carry that much water?

From DLTheo on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 10:35:41 from 155.130.107.41

Yes, still wearing the old shoes. I may try the new shoes again this week, with the knee brace, and see if there is any difference. I don't really like wearing shoes that have almost 1800 miles on them.

I brought 20 oz of water in one bottle. I carry it in my hand until it is empty, then stick it in the back of my shorts. The body can only absorb about 5-7 oz every 15 minutes while running, so I just take 5-6 swallows every two miles.

From I Just Run on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 10:49:08 from 67.79.11.242

My body needs to learn a lesson to only sweat 5-7 oz every 15 minutes.... it tries to sweat out twice that much :-(

From DLTheo on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 11:53:37 from 155.130.107.41

Of course speed affects the rate you sweat and how much water you can absorb. I believe the 5-7 oz absorption rate is based on marathon pace, so if you are running more slowly than that you should be able to take in more. I usually go by how full my stomach feels.

OK, today was sort of weird. I ran without the knee sleeve for the first time since before the marathon. Not by choice, but because I forgot to bring it. Also, I was running in my new shoes again. I was pretty nervous about it, so I ran with extra caution. I felt like my knee was just sticking out there waiting for pain. Yet the run went really well. The only twinge of pain came right after the half way point. I had stopped for a moment, was just starting again and was running down hill. Also wasn't paying much attention. After that, no more pain the rest of the run. Needless to say I was very thankful, but I'm still going to wear the knee sleeve tomorrow.

Feeling much better, energy-wise, than Sunday. Funny how quickly the body can change. On Sunday 12 miles felt like a long run. Today I ran on a hillier course, about 20 seconds/mile faster and yet it felt like a moderate distance. The knee continues to improve gradually.

11:45 AM - 18 miles in approximately 2:18:07. I missed restarting my Garmin after a stop around 6 miles and lost about 3 minutes or so.

The run went great! I managed to run 18 miles without any knee pain. I did wear the knee sleeve as a precaution. Actually, I did have one knee twinge around 5 miles, but that was my fault. The shoulder changed into a ditch just as a car was coming by. Instead of stopping to wait for the car I ran on the incline edge of the ditch, which I would expect to hurt the knee. After that, no other pain or tightness for the next 13 miles.

It rained pretty steadily, despite the forcast saying the rain would stop an hour into the run. Oh well. Still a great run. Actually the rain was pretty light, so it was more refreshing than anything. I intended to keep the pace in the 7:45-8:00 pace range, but after a few miles of trying to slow down decided to stick with what was comfortable. The last mile was very hard as my quads began to seize up. This was my longest run since I went 18.75 at Eugene 3 weeks ago.

Is there a problem or disadvantage to just wearing the sleeve all the time?

From DLTheo on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 08:23:28 from 76.28.161.119

Well, I don't want to wear it the rest of my life. It starts to smell after a while :)

I'd rather not be dependent on equipment to get me through my runs. I got orthotics a few years ago for PF. As soon as the PF was gone I stuck them in the closet. Kinda like being dependent on the government - it creates a crutch that makes you weaker.

The plan is to run the marathon on Saturday, then take the next four days off. Run short easy runs on Thursday and Friday and then the ultra on Saturday. The ultra is 3 9.6 mile laps around Lake Youngs, so if I get into serious trouble I can always bail. Hopefully that won't happen. Then I can finally join the maniacs!

Not quite as perfect as the last two days, but probably 95%. I had a couple minor twinges that didn't really hurt. One came at 3 1/2 miles, when I was trying to quickly cross a street ahead of a speeding car. The other came right when I finished because I stopped a little too abruptly. Good run, it's good to hear the knee is doing better.

From Carl on Fri, Jun 01, 2012 at 14:23:13 from 24.19.78.45

Every year at Washington High School, Coach Riksen would give us the lecture on running on the roads...

"When you cross the street, make sure you have enough time to start crossing, trip, fall down, get up, trip, fall down, get up, trip, fall down, get up, and then finish crossing the street!"

I'm sure you've heard that lecture before.

From DLTheo on Fri, Jun 01, 2012 at 15:42:19 from 76.28.161.119

Oh yes, I've not only heard it, I've given it. And I did have time to do all that, but I still wanted to get across the road quickly. Actually, the problem was that I was stepping down off of a sidewalk and accelerating hard at the same time.

Thinking back on that lecture about crossing roads, I'm so anal about the stopwatch that for me it would be "fall down, stop the watch, get up, start the watch, fall down, stop the watch, ...". Whenever I fall on the run the first thing I do is stop the watch. Then I roll out of the way of oncoming traffic. :)

Green River Marathon in 3:29:47.

1 down, 1 to go. I decided to run this marathon is a rebound after my DNF at Eugene. It's a great run for that purpose since it is a low-key, no frills, FREE marathon. No race numbers. No mile markers. No awards. No traffic control. Just an accurately measured marathon on beautiful trails from Kent to Seattle.

This year there were about 200 runners, which I gathered is a lot for this race. The weather kept things interesting. It was raining at the start, and off and on for the first 10 miles. When it wasn't raining it was muggy. By around mile 16 it started to clear up and the humidity dropped, too.

Since my main goal is to run two marathons in two weekends, I approached this as an easy long run where I didn't have to carry my own fluids. Goal pace was mid 7:40s. To make sure I didn't run too fast I brought my camera so I could stop and take pictures throughout the course. I also stopped at all of the aid stations, which costed me 10-15 seconds on each of those miles. I also had to stop at a couple traffic lights, just for a few seconds, though. I got to run with the race director the first couple miles. He was a little slower than me so it was a good way to start. I ran with a few other people here and there, just to make the miles go by faster. Nevertheless, from mile 14 through 18 I was beginning to wonder if I was still on the course. There was nobody else around. It was a lot of fun running with no real time goals in mind, and just enjoying the easy pace.

I found that I was really in poor shape to run a whole marathon. Since 18 miles is the longest I've run in a couple months I expected to get to mile 20 feeling good and then go down hill from there. That was pretty much true, except I didn't anticipate how bad I'd feel over the last couple miles. I maintained the same pace through 22 or so. Once I started to get really tired, and everything was hurting, I reminded myself that I was planning on doing another in one week, so I backed off the rest of the way.

Afterwards it took me about 17 minutes to recover, as opposed to an hour or two like usual. The finish is across from Spuds Fish 'n chips. I passed on that, but enjoyed a big bowl of clam chowder!

I wish I had two weeks between these races. I'm pretty sure the second one would be a lot easier, just from the benefits of having run 26 miles, as well as being fully recovered. Instead, I anticipate not being completely rested. I'll play it by ear. I will probably take it even easier than I did today. My garmin is in the other room, so I'll get the splits later.

Around mile 24 I think both of my knees were bothering me. It was hard to tell for sure, though, because everything else was hurting way worse! the knee injury is to the point now where, if there is any pain it is way below tolerance level. Pretty soon I won't even notice it, and then it will go away completely.

Not a good run. My legs are feeling good and strong, mostly recovered. My knee was very unhappy with me. I was going to go 5-6 today, but the knee said no. I'll try again tomorrow with the knee sleeve.

One thing I have not done since the marathon is ice the knee. It didn't hurt much in the marathon and not at all since, so I didn't think about it. I had other places to ice that seemed worse. During the run today the knee felt like there was inflammation, so hopefully a little ice will take care of the problem. I'm still optimistic it will be fine by Saturday.

To finish. I don't really care about time. I expect to run a slower pace than last week.

Paid and IN the Maniacs!!!!

Lake Youngs Ultra - 28.25 miles in 4:20:28.

Wow, 28.25 miles is a long way to run. Even at such a slow pace. The knee held up. Now it has earned some rest.

The course was pretty tough for me. Most of the experienced ultra runners there said it was an easy course, but then I passed most of them in the last lap of the course :).

I had been thinking I would run a bit easier even than last week. I didn't expect to go this slow. Lot's of marathon maniacs in the race. I joined up with one of them in the first 1/2 mile and ran with her for about 5 miles. She was running her 4th marathon in 4 weeks to move up to a four star ranking in MM! She was running about 9:15 pace, which was a little slow for my comfort zone and about a minute slower than I would've gone if by myself. I'm glad I did that, though. It paid off at the finish line.

At the end of each lap we have to check in with the finish area so they can record our progress. I also stopped at the car to re-lube, and locked my key in the trunk! >:(

I borrowed someone's phone and tried to reach my wife, to no avail. Thankfully, I was able to get ahold of her a little later, when I was about 13 miles into the run, and gave her directions to the race. I found on the 2nd lap that the middle 3 miles are the best. Flat or downhill mostly, with fairly smooth paths (all of the course was on trails, with some on single track). The last 3 miles or so of each lap is tough, with a huge steep hill right before the finish. On the first lap I jogged up the hill. ON the second I jogged and walked up it. On the third I limped up it.

During the 3rd lap I actually felt really good until about mile 25. I had run a few splits a bit faster to test the waters and felt I could go even faster, but then the uphills began and killed me. Thankfully, all the people I had passed over the previous miles died, too, so I kept catching and passing with nobody catching me. As I said, when I got to the last big hill I had to limp up it. The grade was so steep that even walking up it made my quads start to cramp, so I did sort of a crab-like sideways walk. As soon as I got to the top I took off and felt pretty good again. I'm sure I could've gone longer if the next few miles were fairly flat and smooth.

Great experience. Afterwards I didn't have the usual nausea and cramping problems I typically deal with. I grabbed bananas and potato chips, then headed over to the barbecue for a hot dog, then a cheese burger, plus a few chocolate chip cookies, all within the first 20 minutes after the race. Normally I can't eat anything for an hour after a marathon.

Weather was pretty good. Mid 50's. It rained the first lap, actually got a little sunny the second lap, then turned gray again and sprinkled a little in the last lap.

Great pacing! I've always found that the Maniacs are consistent pacers in races. If I meet one with a similar time goal, I just stick with him (if I can) and have a great race.

Looks like you are going to be just like the other Maniacs!

I should be able to fit in pretty well on the pacing. I usually run pretty evenly. I don't plan to run so slowly, though. I'm thinking about a 1/2 in July. Olympia Lakefair is adding a 1/2 to their lineup.

Let me know how you like the World of Color nighttime water spectacular. My company designed and built all of the water effects and lighting for that show. Disney provided all the animated video and show production.

I'm back to running. Nothing too exciting, though. I've just added the four runs I've done since the ultra. I took a full week+ off when I was down in California, just soaking in the awesome vacation.

For now I'm taking it easy, running only a few times a week, trying to get the knee to heal a bit more before I ramp up some mileage.

From DLTheo on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 09:06:36 from 76.28.161.119

It was probably around 60-65. Today is supposed to be 75, which is warm for us.

My legs are fine. After I race a marathon it usually takes a minimum of 1 month for me to recover. But I didn't race these, they were just long runs.

Running with the knee sleeve makes all the difference. Yesterday's 3 miler the knee was a pain. Today it was a non-factor.

Today was warm (for the PNW)! 71 degrees when I'm used to upper 50's. I felt it in the second half. Also, I've been having some GI distress since yesterday afternoon. It didn't bother me on the run, but I suspect it contributed to some dehydration and maybe a little more fatigue.

I felt okay the first couple miles, then started to run out of gas.

6 miles on new hilly route in 50:30

The new route bug bit me today, so I got out my Google Maps and looked for something that heads north or east, instead of my usual south or west. Heading East means heading down into the valley.

This new route will be a great hill challenge in the future, when I get into better shape. For now, it was a slog-fest. I started out slow and got slower. You run out the first 2.25 miles through neighborhoods, with a gradual climb from 400 to 520 feet. Then you drop down into the valley, going from 520 down to 50 in about .8 miles. Being out of shape, my legs felt like jelly from the downhill. Then I turned around and headed back up.

Even though I was braking the whole way down I still managed a pretty quick split. On the way back I just worried about getting one foot in front of the other, didn't care about pace at all.

Splits: 8:05 - 8:19 - 7:17.5 - 10:21 - 8:12 - 8:15

It will be interesting to see what my hill splits are like when I'm in better shape. I was actually at about 10:45 when I crested the hill, then sped up over the last 0.2.

2 mile jog in 17:09 (8:35/mile)

I just did an easy jog today because I knew I wouldn't be able to run for the next few days. After yesterday's hill, plus some strength training, everything hurt. Mostly it was my feet, ankles and lower legs that were so sore I could barely walk. The jog helped.

Still feeling stiff and sore. A little better running, though, although the distance feels longish. I wore the knee sleeve today. No pain while running. The last mile I ran out of gas.

I'm pretty close to going into the doctor for it. Problem is, after taking so much time off my knee wasn't really hurting much, except when doing certain activities. I figured I should try to build up some mileage again and see what happens. If the knee does OK, I'll just keep building. If it gets worse then I have something to show the doctor.

That's exactly my opinion in designing robotics...run it til it breaks, then you know what to fix!

7 miles in Ocean Park in 54:35 (7:48/mile)

Feeling pretty good today, getting the legs back to feeling like they know how to run. Upper quads were pretty sore the last 1 1/2 miles, though. Knee off and on.

I ran out I street, like I usually do when running from the cabin in Ocean Park. I opted to not run on the beach, since my knee wouldn't like it much. I got to the end of the road at around 3miles, where there is a big wrought iron gate. Very dark and forboding gate, looks like the entrance to Cassanova Frankenstein or something. At first I didn't approach the gate. There were some walkers outside of it, so when they got to me I asked them if pedestrians were allowed inside they said No.

So, I ran from there out towards the beach where I could get a view of the enclosed area. No sign of any houses overlooking the coast. Just trees. So, I ran back to the gate, saw the signs that said "No Trespassing" and "Security Cameras". I noticed there was only one security gate, trained on the gate. There was a space to the side where a runner could slip through, if he so desired. Well, what would you do? I went in, skirted around behind the security camera and headed down the road.

It was kinda disappointing. I ran for about 1/2 mile or so, until it was time to turn around. Nothing but a road with dense trees on both sides. Occasionally a sign that said "Keep Out". Next time I'm going to head out there on a 10 mile or longer run so I can figure out what is in there.

On the way back out a car was approaching, so I ducked into the woods until he passed, just in case. That was the only sign of life I saw for about 10 minutes I was in there.

What's the purpose of being a fit runner if I can't explore unchartered territories once in a while? :)

From DLTheo on Thu, Sep 06, 2012 at 09:15:57 from 76.28.161.119

Not really with this knee injury. The extra steep hill puts a little more stress on it, but not much. Stepping down off a sidewalk is worse.

6.11 miles on "The Dip" in 50:44 (8:18/mile)

I discovered that this week is my 1000th week of logged mileage in my running log. That means that, since 1987, I have logged at least one entry in 1000 different weeks. Considering that there have been about 1300 weeks over that time, 1000 is pretty good. Over that span I've covered about 22,600 miles, so about 2500 to go to complete one circumference of the earth. After that I'll be going for Jupiter!

Today I wasn't in the mood to run. It was cool and foggy this morning and by noon was still overcast. So, I waited, and finally it cleared up around 12:30 and I went out. Pace lagged a bit, and the hill was as tough as ever. The knee was better than the last two days, though.

I ran this kind of as a light progression run, but kept the pace pretty relaxed the whole way, no faster than easy-moderate. I tacked on a 1/2 mile cool down at the end because I knew my legs needed to have at least a short jog at the end before stopping.

Splits will come later, but I was somewhere under 1 hour for the 8 miles. The only trouble with the knee was at the half way point. I stopped for about 30 seconds before turning around, and then when I started up again the whole knee felt tight and swollen. I stopped, shook it out and started up again and was fine the rest of the way. I think I was also going a bit too fast when it was hurting, so I backed off just a bit.

This was a tough run. It felt long. At about 7.5 I wanted to stop, but of course had to run home. The main problem, I think, was that I was tuckered from shovelling and wheelbarrowing soil from the front to the backyard. I meant to do it for about 1/2 hour as a warmup before the run, but ended up doing it for about 1 1/2 hours. I guess that was a little too much maybe.

Afterwards I didn't feel well at all and didn't get much more shovelling done.

On the plus side, I made it ten miles, which is my longest run in some time. Probably since the Lake Youngs Ultra back in June.

My first run in the rain since who knows when. It's been months. Unfortunately the front of me didn't handle it well. I delayed the run because weather.com said it was going to be dry between noon and 3, so I went out at 12:30. The hardest of the rain today fell during the second half of my run. My shirt as a little rough and I spent the last few miles pulling it out from my chest to avoid more pain and suffering. I also slowed down during that time, so that's my excuse. Otherwise, the run actually felt better than the 10 last week. Of course I wasn't shovelling and wheelbarrowing beforehand today.

Carl, it's been just over six months. April 14th was the day it first hurt. I had an x-ray on Thursday, then saw the PA. She asked questions, tried to make it hurt, etc. Nothing wrong on the x-ray. She thinks it's either a slightly torn meniscus or a bruised bone. I'm having an MRI this morning at 9:20. She should call me by tomorrow to let me know the results of that.

Not a bad run. The knee wasn't really bothering me today at all. I pushed the pace just a bit, outside of an easy jog.

Splits: 7:49 - 7:27 - 7:44 - 7:19 - 7:41 - 7:52

The MRI didn't reveal anything helpful. This is why I don't like to go to doctors for my injuries. They rarely have anything helpful to tell me. Neither the x-ray nor the MRI showed any structural issues. I guess the good news, though, is that I am not doing any damage to cartilage or bones. So, it was helpful to go to the doctor to at least know that. Now I can continue to progress and not worry about the pain too much. They did give me some exercises to try for a few weeks. We'll see. Next up will be some new running shoes. Maybe that will take care of it.

That's really good that the MRI was normal! Do you have a diagnosis for the pain? Or, at least a list of possible diagnoses?

When was the last time you got new shoes? My rule is to always get new shoes when I get injured.

Sometimes, I don't follow my own rule. I always regret it when I don't follow it though... because my delay in getting new shoes delayed my recovery.

From Carl on Mon, Oct 29, 2012 at 01:16:51 from 216.161.241.200

Yikes! I just looked at your shoe mileage. Four pairs of shoes with 750 miles or more on each one! Time to go shopping. You'll be doing your injured knee a favor!

From DLTheo on Mon, Oct 29, 2012 at 09:30:21 from 76.28.161.119

That's the plan. I'll probably get them tomorrow. The knee pain started soon after I got the current pair of shoes. At the time I thought it might be the new shoes so I switched to a couple other pairs for a while but it didn't seem to make a difference. I suspect a new pair will help now, though.

I ran without the knee brace today and regretted it. A friend, who usually is much slower than me, caught up to me in the 1st mile and we ran together for a little while. The quicker pace on rocky and uneven terrain was hard on the knee. I ran the 2nd half by myself, slowed down, stayed on flatter surfaces and didn't have much trouble after that.

I held off running until almost noon, waiting for a break in the rain. I waited until weather.com assured me it would be dry for a couple hours. Needless to say it rained the entire run. It's always fun to wring out the shirt, short, and even underwear afterwards.

I taped my top parts to prevent chafing, which worked fine. My goal on this run was to run the first four miles easy, speed up to normal pace the middle four and then have enough energy to run quickly the last four. Not sure why it didn't work out quite like that. I guess the rain got too me? I wasn't feeling overwhelmingly tired or in pain, and I had brought water with me, too. I did end up feeling good enough to push the last mile a little bit. Still, I think this was my fastest 12 miler so far, thanks to the last mile. Actually, turns out I ran exactly the same time as last week. Add in the rain, though, and this was a better run.

From DLTheo on Wed, Dec 05, 2012 at 12:22:10 from 155.130.107.42

I think usually it is ok to run through a cold. Not a flu, though. Anytime you have a fever there should be no running. Usually my colds peak on the 2nd day and I have 1 or 2 really bad days, then it tapers off. So, I often try to run throughout the cold, except on those two really bad days.

I read somewhere that running causes a temporary "fever" that helps the body fight the cold. That's why you shouldn't run when you already have a fever, it raises your temp even more, which can be dangerous. But during a cold without fever it is a benefit.

More than you wanted to know :)

There's no such thing as "too much knowledge" :-) I just hope I don't get the flu this year!

Still getting over the cold. Other than that the run was really good. The knee thing was barely noticeable, and only in the last coupe miles. Other parts of me felt good. Just a little heaviness in the lungs and a bit of coughing. If not for the cold I might've gone a little faster or a little further.

No running. I gave up a pint of blood instead.

It was my first time to give blood. I've always skipped out when the blood mobile came to the office, either because I was sick or because I was in the middle of marathon training. However, my dad has always given faithfully, but he is no longer able to because of illness. So, I decided it was time to step up and take over the donating duties from him.

Thankfully, I had no adverse reaction from it, though the nurses said no running for 24 hours. I'll have to plan accordingly in the future to schedule it in with training.

3 miles in 21:15 (7:05/mile)

The goals was to run 3 miles at 7 min mile pace, like the 2 mile run I did a couple weeks ago. It felt harder than I expected. I weigh more, am in poorer shape, maybe giving blood has a lasting effect, though minor. The good news is that the 7:15 pace of the 3rd mile felt pretty easy. Next time I'll start out with a plan of around 7:10-7:15 instead.

It's good to see you getting consistantat in your running. Do you have your next race picked out?

BTW...Where is Carl?

From DLTheo on Mon, Dec 17, 2012 at 15:13:54 from 155.130.107.41

I'm trying to run 4-5 days a week. So far it's been more like 3-4, but I get over 20 miles for the week.

No races on the horizon. I think I'm going to skip the January 1 race I usually do.I can't bear to run slow in a race.

I don't know where Carl is. If I was in better shape I'd be hounding him to get together for a long run. I suspect he's just busy. Hopefully not injured.

Supposed to be 4 miles of progression run. The plan was to run about 7:20, 7:10, 7:00, 6:55 or so. On the 3rd mile, the uphill really got to me, so I decided to just take it easy the rest of the way. The nice part was that on the flatter 4th mile I returned to the same pace I ran in the first two miles without trying.

Just an easy run after 3 days off. I was accosted by a large dog and his smaller black lab buddy. Thankfully, while I was having a face off with Cujo, a guy in a pick up truck came by and distracted the dog long enough for me to make a get away. I went a different way back home.

I ran by Cujo again, and he was not chained or penned up again. This time there was no pickup to help me, but he didn't have his buddy with him either. I yelled very loudly at him which made him stop in his tracks. At this point I knew I had him, so I just stopped and stared him down. He gradually calmed down, worked his way to the other side of the street and stopped barking and snarling. By the time I was ready to start running again a neighbor came by and grabbed him. From DLTheo on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 10:47:23 from 155.130.107.42

I think I've got a system for dealing with the knee now where I can train through it and it will eventually get better. Now I just have to lose some weight, build up some mileage, and eventually start doing some speedier running.
