Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Yep, legs were pretty trashed from practice - I felt them when I woke up.  Still, I thought I could do my workout.  I had to be downtown early at our main building for a meeting.  This would be a great opportunity to run some MGP on the hills of Enfield and Expo I though.  After 3 w/u sluggish miles I could feel it would be a hard day/bad workout day.  I haven't had one in a while so I was due.

It was hard on the first couple to get to pace and felt overly hard - here I should have cut my losses and ran easy the rest of the way, but no, the rational mind was put to rest.  So I continued on and the hills took their toll - had a couple quick breaks for water and to fidget with my music - but managed to put in a solid last few miles.

But when I stopped I could feel the right sciatic nerve that wasn't happy.  Big yellow flag here - as I have had this once before and it was the most painful injury I have suffered through.  So hopefully with some good stretching and rolling it won't turn into much.

Anyway - I am not going to play flag football again - mainly because the game is 3 days after my marathon - I won't be in any condition to play - so why keep going to practice and risking an injury?  It was fun though.

Hopefully not too big a setback... Glad I'm not the only one messing up with the extracurriculars! At least you were running the next day.

Isn't it amazing what we'll do to ensure a healthy race? I missed out on waterskiing this summer because every time I went to the lake was too close to a race. Nice job getting out!

Joe - yes, glad to be able to at least run. Still very sore as of this morning, but I might manage a few easy tonight.

Matt- yes, I normally avoid all of those things that could cause injury. :-)

Thinking in lieu of the 5k I will probably run the 10 mile option @ MGP for the first 5 and drop the last 5, with 5 miles before and 3 after. Again, have to look at the long term goal of the marathon here. Input appreciated.

Your plan seems like a good one. Looks like a great workout, and like you said you're keeping the goal distance in mind.

Hopefully the entry fee isn't $115!
