Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Met up with my old training group for 1000's.  It was low 30's but compared to NE is felt like the bahamas.  Pulled my hoodie off at the track and ran in a base layer and long sleeve shirt.

I held on with the lead pack for 5 and then had to take a bit of a break. These guys are peaking right now for the Austin marathon so I knew I probably couldn't hang for 8 repeats so I told myself I would do 6.   I tried to jump in on a 6th but my knee - which had been a non-issue - acted up.  I worked on it a bit with some strong pressure - it's really lower left side of knee coming up the side of the calf.  This worked and I did a 6th 1000m with no issues.  However, when I attempted the 200m strides it was a no-go.  I hobbled back the 1.75 miles to the annex and then hit the foam roller pretty hard.  I don't think it is serious and with some rolling it should be OK.  I will have to stay away from speed for a while though.

6 x 1000 - 3:50 to 3:40 ish (6:00 ish pace) with 200m recovery in between.

Good workout. You still doing 3M?

From derhammer on Thu, Jan 03, 2013 at 20:57:55 from 66.68.110.62

Probably not. I don't feel in good shape right now and I have not been putting in the workouts or mileage I need. In addition to that, they changed the course this year and the last 2 miles are a killer.

There is a 30k at the end of the month I may take on for a solid MGP run for training purposes. Maybe 5 miles working up to MGP and then 13 @ MGP.

Good to see you back running DH but I wish I hadn't seen your comment about the course change for the 3M :-(

DH,

Where did you get your information on the course change? I just looked it up and found this on the website:

Sunday‚ Jan. 13‚ 2013

A perennial favorite with Austin runners‚ the 3M Half Marathon is one of the capital city’s largest distance road racing events. This year will feature the same course as last year‚ the same great point to point. Race registration cap is at 7‚000 – all 3M Half Marathon entries.

Sorry, IJR - I thought about you when I made that comment. It's better to know in order to save some for the end. You won't be able to drop the bomb at mile 11. There is a hard left up Dean Keaton and that is a pretty big hill, then right on Riverside which has some rollers, then right on MLK which will be a bit of decline before climbing up towards the Capitol.
