Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Close to 70 degrees, muggy start.  The group took off at 6 am, Mike and I ran a half mile down the opposite direction on the trail so that we would get in 15 miles.  I had run a half mile before the start.

The course was Expo hills, Mt. Bonnel, Scenic, Enfield hills, then finish on the trail.

I had a crappy run, nothing in my legs the last couple miles, Mike took off with 4 miles to go and I couldn't stay with him.  It was miserable, I am actually quite depressed.  I thought I would be feeling good around now in the training cycle but I feel worse. I couldn't generate any leg speed for the life of me - no strength, nothing... Not sure what to make if it all.

I came home and slept for an  hour and a half.

Next training cycle I am sticking to what has worked for me.  I feel like I just want to get through Boston and take some time off.  Hopefully, I will cheer up later today.

Very similar experience today, at a much slower pace of course. I think it will take us a while to get used to the humid heat, it has to be respected and times just aren't going to be as good.

Don't let it get you down (easier said than done I know). It was brutal out there this morning. The hills, heat and humidity were a trifecta of woe ;o(.

Its always tough in the lead up to a big race as your body is adjusting to the slightly lower mileage. You also feel all the little aches and pains, and we also over analyze every little thing!

While I can't make you feel better. You should trust your training. You've worked so hard, had so many great runs that I am confident that you will have a great race in Bean Town. As you recently told me you are great deal of personal drive and determination, and one bad run cannot erase months of hard work. Rest up my friend, spend some time with the family, and if you fancy an easy run on the trail tomorrow then let me know ;o).

70 and muggy. Your body is not operating efficiently in the heat yet, that's all it is. I know it's easier said than done, but don't worry about it. You've had some ridiculously good runs this cycle, those don't just disappear.

Lots of voices of reason. I have been VERY impressed with most of your focus runs this year. You will do great at Boston. We all have runs like you did today. I have had a few months of 'em ;)

Not that I know much about running...but I do know that a few days of rest will do wonders for your energy and strength. I bet when you start tapering everything will come together! You're going to have a great BOSTON ...!
