Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David. 

 I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years. 

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

My wife has a conference and we are at the Marriot resort just outside of San Antonio.  I am spending the day with the kids - a perfect day to sleep in and take a rest day.  I still woke up at 5am though.  I tried to fall back asleep - it was difficult.  It's a gorgeous day, though.

I found this article brief but interesting: 

"Many marathon runners think that they have to run 100 miles a week to compete successfully, but most will be able to run a marathon faster if they run fewer than 50 miles a week. Top marathon runners can run 100 miles a week and not be injured because of their superior genes. When most runners try to run 100 miles a week, they run too slowly in practice, and as a result, run too slowly in races."

Sounds like a mini-vacation to me...enjoy the time!

It's interesting I was just reading another article about milage and elite runners vs normal's. I also just started tracking "race pace" miles per run/week. I'm going to try and put in more "race pace" miles over the next 2-3 weeks and see how that goes. It seems my recovery is fairly short so that might help too.

Keep the good information coming, I have been saving everything either in my spreadsheet or on my Favorites.

Good read. I have decided that each individual responds differently to the types of training. I used to do lower miles and quite a bit of speed work with little results. I slowed down and tacked on miles and speed came. I was able to improve this by incorporating speed work now with the miles - but I did not have that aerobic base I needed. I will say your training is really paying off! Of course you still should have eaten a cookie for every year :)

Dan - yeah, the cookies would have been a good idea. 43 though, that would have been quite a few.
