Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

I wanted to get in a medium long run but at the same time go easy on my legs.  So I drove downtown to the Lady Bird Lake trail.  I ran the 11 mile loop from the pool and tacked bit on before and after to get to 13.5.  It was in the 30's so great day for running.  When I left the house it was 39-40 so I wore shorts and no gloves or hat.  I think it was colder downtown.  The last mile was really cold - this is when the sun was just coming up.  When I got in my car the temp was 31.  Strange that it would cool off a few degrees during sunrise.

Overall pace for the run was 8:20 - the last couple miles were in the 7:50's.

Hey...just found you on the Blog..! Thought I would say Hi since we are neighbors. I live near San Marcos. I just signed up on the Blog a few days ago (loaded all the running data that I had) and have been looking around on the website trying to figure it all out. I also found Flatlander (another Texan), who I see you are friends with. As you will see on my Blog I haven't been running long but I am signed up for the Livestrong Half Marathon on Feb. 20. Looks like you have made great progress since you started running. Good to meet you, I'll be watching your Blog!

Hi there, good to meet you and welcome!

I am signed up for the Austin full marathon. Have you run the half before?

Derhammer,

I've never run anything but three 5K's. I've been running 40+ miles a week for about 4 month now with my long runs 15 to 20 miles. My 10 mile pace is normally about 7:45 to 8:00 on a somwhat hilly terrain. Hoping I can do that over this Half...? I'm a little anxious about this run just because I haven't ever done it before...hope to just not look silly.

I doubt you will look silly.

Pace yourself - run miles 2.5-5.5 a bit slower - maybe 10 seconds off pace -these miles are a constant uphill. Then try to run 10 seconds below pace on miles 5.5-8 - you will be coming back into town on a mostly downhill section. Ideally you want to be even and on pace at the end of mile 8. Mile 10-11 is another climber - nothing crazy but steady. 11-13 you have some rollers. Slow up and fast down. By then, of course, you just suck it up and gut it out. :-) Since you have been training on hilly terain you will be fine.

Thanks Der Hammer for the advice. Maybe I'll see you at the race.
