I went in to see an orthopedic doctor today about my knee. I decided just before I went that I would run a couple of miles on it so he could see any swelling that might be there. I started with an out and back to the house warm up mile in 7:35. Second mile I figured I'd pick up the pace and make the most of it since I only seem to be able to run 2 miles. I ran that in 6:29 and my knee hadn't started hurting yet so I did a 3rd mile in 6:15 and it was still okay. Maybe I just need to run faster. The doctor said I have plica syndrome. After checking out the x-rays he said my cartilage and ligaments looked good and told me to take ibuprofen and go ahead and run. I hadn't been taking Ibuprofen for this yet because I didn't want to risk more damage. He seemed to figure ibuprofen would get me back running all the miles I want without doing any damage.

PM I was able to run 6 miles.

Well, I guess that's good news from the doc. Hopefully the IB helps with the inflamation, swelling and pain. I too am on the IB for the rest of the way. Hopefully I can ween myself off by the last week of the taper, I hate to race while taking the stuff.

Great news.

Dave, take care of that knee, ibuprofen is your friend. are you doing TOU and St George or just St. George?

Scott, I'm just doing St George if I can even get down there healthy enough to run it.

Dave, sounds like you will be OK, just be very careful. just drop the miles, time to taper anyway. I have come to the conclusion that high mileage isn't healthy for many of us, especially us old guys. Too many risks. I refuse to run more that 60, maybe 70 tops miles a week even if I decide to do Mesquite marathon. Instead I am going to focus on quality runs, and maybe more crosstraining (kicking, spinning) as well. Speaking for me anyway, there is no way I can run 75-100 mile weeks. Don't have the time or the desire. And I don't really think the increased benefits are worth the risk. If I get hurt training for this marathon, that is it for me, I can have just as much fun running 10Ks and half marathons, and the cardiovascular benefits are just as good. The other option will be to transition to trail running, a logical thing for us to do.
