I did the long bike ride again today one last time before SGM. 56 miles on my mt. bike. 36 on dirt and 20 paved. I went a little farther than last week. I went at a pretty hard pace the whole ride expecially the last hour and a half. The ride took 3:25. Ave 16.1 MPH. I felt pretty strong the whole ride not like the last 2 weeks when I tired out in  different sections. I don't know how much this will help in the marathon but I figure keeping my HR up pretty good for 3 1/2 hours should help since I can't do it running yet. My back is still a little sore and with yesterdays easy run and no run today I'm hoping not to risk making it worse.

Dude, your rides are out of control. While your running legs may not be there for SGM you certainly have the fitness to run it. Sounds like your running SGM is a for sure thing then? If it's for sure do you have a time goal or just run and enjoy?

I don't know if I dare say sure thing until I'm on the start line the way things have been going [If you know what I mean]. It's hard to walk the line between getting as much running fitness back as I can in the next 2 weeks and not overdoing it. As far as a time goal right now I have no idea. I really haven't run anything faster than 8:00 pace yet and mostly over 8:20. I did run three downhill miles last week in around 7:20 but that was pretty steep. It didn't feel to bad though. I'm a little nervous about faster pace too quickly after what I went through with my last hamstring issue. It was trying to run fast that kept me from recovering that time [it took about 6 months] although I think it was a different type of injury. It was more of a tendonites that came from overuse rather than a tear that happened all at once like this time. It was on the same side. Before my injury I was thinking I could realisticly go comfortably under 3 hours [Sashas race predicter had me at 2:53 and I was still improving]. Part of me thinks I still want to shoot for sub 3 but when I really think about it and all the long runs and tempo runs and downhill runs I missed and the fact that I haven't even run a MP mile in 6 weeks and probably won't for another week I would be real happy with 3:10 or 15. 3:10 was my goal early in the year. I guess next week after trying some MP miles I might have a better idea. I will probably only end up taking a 1 week taper or less so that won't help either.

I'm trying to decide whether to try another 20 this saturday real easy like last saturday and then maybe 17 with some fast miles thrown in the next week or just wait till next week and try 20 and running a little harder. Any thoughts ?

Dave..my thoughts are if you are thinking of running close to 3:15 you better dang well jump in our little pace group we've got lined up with me huans32, mikewarren and a couple others. I also don't think you will require much of a taper so those extra long runs would probably do you some good. I think if you took it easy the week before the marathon you would be just fine. Think about the pace group, we would love to have you and I would like to meet you so I can put a face with a name. Best of luck these next couple of weeks. Train smart and listen to your body.

Jeff, I'd love to run with you guys. I'll have to see how next week goes and get a better idea of what I should shoot for. Part of me still can't let go of trying for 3 hours but it's probably not likely for me this time.
