Wow things have changed! I am writing this race report for Elder Cobler who is serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Elder Cobler asked for special permission of his mission president to participate in the event and was happy when it was agreed upon that it could be a good teaching experience. We just finished our Mother's Day phone call and he showed us pictures and told stories of the people he was able to talk to before and after the race. Runners are great people. I would always stand behind that statement. As a Dad and coach, I knew the race could and would be difficult and present challenges for Dakota. When Dakota asked what I thought of him attempting the race I knew the outcome of the many obstacles he would encounter would help him and his testimony grow. First, the challenge of keeping his companion close by during the race. Proved to be easy because it was a smaller race and he could pedal ahead and help at water stations. Second, the challenge of being a missionary. What were the other runners thinking. Elder Cobler shows up to the race in a white shirt, his badge, tie, shorts and running shoes and races in them. It is hot and humid and his pictures of him during the race are funny to see. I am sure many did a double take along the route as he followed the police car that lead the runners and the front pack. His biggest challenge however would be his lack of training. You are on a mission to serve and are very busy from sun up to sun down. Yes he is able to squeeze in a short run on some days, but not a regular training regiment as one would like. Also, he has gained about 30 lbs in the ten months he has been out, which adds to his challenges. I told him the hardest part would be the last 5k, he said it hit him much earlier. This gave him an opportunity for a few prayers along the way. Elder Cobler was very happy when he ultimately crossed the finish line. He shared an experience with his campanion they both will always remember. Running and the interactions with others over the years have always blessed our family. Dakota continues to share the gospel and his love to run with others. |
