2019 Running Schedule

Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.

April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.

May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.

October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential.

Personal:

Summer 2018 update: I'm lazy about copying over from Strava, so find me over there for day-to-day runs until I eventually get around to copying everything over here.

Lunch time to early PM: Skied at Snowbird.  Had a rather bad crash in the double black chutes in Silver Fox that tweaked a muscle on the outside of my calf in my left leg (probably the Soleus?)  Fortunately, while it was noticeable while running, it didn't affect my ability to run.

Later PM: Went out for a run with Holly.  A mile in, the salt in the roads must have been bugging her paws, as she suddenly refused continued running.  It took a little while to get her back home, as she would stop every 30 seconds or so.  Poor girl. :(  Anyway, I dropped her off at home and went back out for a few laps of Liberty.  In the process, I nearly got run over by a cop in an intersection in which I had the right of way (he gunned it after making eye contact with me, while I was already in the intersection, despite him having a stop sign and me not having one).  A little later, I got to witness another cop further polluting this ridiculously terrible air during two of my laps.  He was just sitting there apparently texting or playing a cell phone game, idling away and dumping more garbage into the air.  I was going slowly, so he was idling there for at least 12 minutes, despite the law prohibiting idling for more than 2.  Great work, guys.  Way to set the bar high.  Fortunately, I reported both officers.  Unfortunately, absolutely nothing will be done.

In case you can't tell, I was pretty annoyed for the entire 2nd portion of the run after nearly getting run over.

Obviously, this week sucked, but I had incredibly important things going on in the lab, so I'm OK with that.  I'll pick it back up this week, but given how much I'm planning on skiing this week, I doubt it'll be all that monstrous.

Oh, and congrats to Zach Bitter for running 100 miles in 11:47 today.  7:04/mile for 100 miles is really freaking impressive.

I've almost been hit by a cop that ran a red light while I was crossing.

You gotta start taking the law into your own hands. You think Batman would just call in and report a corupt officer from the comfort of his phone? Vigilante justice, Collin. Put on your accessory belt (I'm sure you have one from your ultra-running days, even I do!), and start cleaning up the streets of Salt Lake City. Give the people something to believe in.

As long as you "report them" when they do something good for you like save your life (something my dad was able to do there times in his career as a cop).

Anyone who goes to work every day wearing a bullet proof vest I'm willing to cut a little slack. Most of us sit in warm, comfy offices all day. A cop's car is his office.

Hah, I actually don't have an accessory belt! I won an accessory belt ipod clip-on pouch at the Salt Air 5k, but I have no belt to put it on!

Rob, I'm certainly not anti-police. In fact, there have been several cops in my family. I've just had a lot of extremely bad experiences with them in Utah. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but intentionally cutting off citizens on foot and nearly running them over before speeding through a residential neighborhood with lots of young children at well over the limit is absolutely unacceptable. Back when I had Minnesota plates, my car got pulled over all the time for bogus tickets. How do I know they were bogus? I beat every single one of them in court. Since getting Utah plates, I've had no problems whatsoever, except being pulled over and given a warning when my headlight went out. While I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, I've seen enough cops racing each other down Highland at 80+ miles per hour, using their sirens to run red lights, and ignoring numerous other laws that I don't just automatically feel a sense of respect for someone because they have a badge the way that I do for people committing their time and resources as doctors, teachers, philanthropists, etc. I think that guys like Chris Burbank are doing the city a great service and I have previously written the department to commend his philosophies as police chief, but Utah cops have a long way to go to escape the reputation that has been built up through instances like the Danielle Willard case and to make up for many extremely bad situations that I have witnessed.

By the way, SLC PD never responded to my email, despite me specifically requesting that they do so.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Dec 17, 2013 at 21:56:30 from 24.10.249.165

Yeah, I suppose our perceptions are based on our experiences. I've never been almost run over by a cop despite running almost daily since 1978. I've lived right off of Highland Drive for 12 years and never witnessed cops racing each other at 80 mph. But I suppose it happens all the time.

You do know that cops are actually allowed to run red lights when their lights and sirens are on right? That's the whole point. It's not breaking the law when they do it. Same with fire fighters and paramedics.

My guess is that you will get a response to your email. They receive dozens of those types of emails every day. You may not be anti-police but many people are. There are lots of people who make complaining about the police their full time occupation.

They also try to prioritize. A few years ago a small child was sexually assaulted in a bathroom at Sugarhouse Park. I emailed the then chief about perhaps having increased patrols and actually having the police get out of their cars and walk the park from time to time and I got a lengthy personal response within 24 hours.

By the way, Rob, I hope you didn't take disrespect from my response. I absolutely respect your opinion and believe that your dad must have been a good guy to have raised you as well as he did, so I don't mean to disrespect either him or you. I'm just really bad at dealing with people (other than those for whom I work) that assert authority over me and don't like coming close to getting run over, which seems to happen several times a week here by people that blow through stop signs or don't look before turning through a crosswalk. :(
