Threshold Run - 2 miles easy, 2 x 15 min. @ half-marathon pace/10K pace w/1-min. active recovery, 2 miles easy. Average pace: 8:45. Level 2 Shred.

5:30 am, 53° F, 26% humidity, wind 8 S.

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I was wishing for a 2nd pair of gloves. Today I ran in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt and I was fine. However, I still struggled with the pace a bit on account of the wind, especially on the first 15 min. rep. It was mostly uphill and into the wind. The second 15 min. rep. started out uphill and into the wind (because there was precious little rest between them), but then I turned the corner and had a cross wind instead of heading straight into the wind and also things started to tend downhill then. My pace on the first rep was 8:18. My pace on the 2nd rep was 7:54.

A few times recently I've seen an old white-haired guy out running when I've been driving home from the seminary drop-off. He has kind of strange form. He holds his left arm bent close to his body and doesn't swing it, while the right arm swings. I was running a little later today since I didn't have to do the seminary drop-off and so I actually encountered him in the last mile of my run. I passed him and thought that if I kept the same pace I would put some distance between us since I was going faster than him when I passed him. I don't know if he picked up his pace to chase me or what, but I kept hearing his footsteps right behind me. I glanced back a couple of times and he wasn't far behind. I was running about 8:20 pace at that point (it was a gentle down-hill). He followed me for a good half mile or so until I turned off onto my hill sprint hill to head home. I kept up the pace because I didn't want to let the old guy pass me.

I am so glad you had some warmer temperatures this morning!!! We had the same temp, but it was so windy.

Glad you did not let the old guy get you! Isn't it strange when you see people with such odd form run fast?

HAVE A GREAT DAY! Has all of the snow melted yet?

From RAD on Thu, Nov 05, 2009 at 10:15:37 from 76.27.12.70

I always feel defeated when older people pass me! :) Glad you were able to keep it up!! We had nasty wind this morning too - what gives?

Nice work on the paces and keeping it up despite the headwind and hills!

It was fairly windy here today, but probably not as windy as other places. No, the snow hasn't all melted yet. It takes a long time to melt that much snow, particularly in north-facing areas. We're supposed to have really warm temperatures today and tomorrow, so I'm hoping that the snow is all gone by Saturday.

Nice job not letting the old guy pass ya! Good to see that you got some warmer temps.

Nice job on the run. This time of year is so crazy. One day your are bundled up and the next it is t-shirt and shorts. Hey, at least it doesn't get boring.

Nice run Carolyn.

I used to run on the same trail at the same time every morning for awhile. There was an old guy, probably in his early 60's, who would be out there in jeans and a sweatshirt, with a walking stick, and he would blow by me every time I encountered him on these runs. I couldn't keep up with him, but I would watch as he disappeared. He probably waited for me every morning, hiding in the bushes until I passed, then burned everything he had to pass me. At least that's what I'll keep telling myself.

You inspire speed!

Are you feeling better today?

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Nov 05, 2009 at 14:04:39 from 24.199.205.252

JD- that's funny...I can just imagine an old guy in jeans waiting for you in the bushes :-)

Carolyn- You got the luck of the weather today! I love it when there's an extra motivation to keep going fast like that. It can be an old guy, or a younger woman, but it's great when it works out in your favor. Congrats on leaving him in your tailwind.

Sno, the shoulder (it's really more my upper arm) still hurts about the first mile of my run. There's no change really. But it's not bad enough to stop me, so I'm just living with it right now.

From Mark on Fri, Nov 06, 2009 at 10:26:12 from 24.129.132.74

Glad to hear you got some decent weather, 50's is perfect running weather to me.

People with an odd form can be so deceptive sometimes. I see people like that now and then and they can really pick it up when they need to even though they look like they are about to collapse at slower speeds!
