Threshold Run: 2 miles easy, 15 min. @ 1/2M pace, 5 min. active recovery, 15 min. @ 10K pace, 2 miles easy. Average pace: 8:38.

I got up on time this morning but was a little late getting out the door because I spent too much time doing other things such as changing the laundry. But it was okay because I had asked Shaggy to walk to seminary. In fact, just as I finished my workout and was just a few houses away from home, I came upon Shaggy on his way to seminary.

I felt a little sluggish when I started and thought about scrapping the workout, but decided to do it anyway. I struggled a bit through the first interval, but managed to pull out an average pace of 8:08 (I was shooting for between 8:00 and 8:15). Perhaps it's worth nothing that that interval had an elevation gain of 158 ft. and an elevation loss of 107 ft. so it was slightly net uphill. I didn't really feel ready to go on the second interval after the 5 min. recovery, but I did it anyway. This interval had an elevation gain of 113 ft. and an elevation loss of 202 ft., so a pretty good net downhill, which helped me. I was aiming for 7:45 pace on this interval but pulled out an average pace of 7:37.

The problem with running a workout like this on the roads is that I had to stop and wait for traffic lights. I had a fairly long stop about 5 minutes into the first interval, and a shorter stop, probably less than a minute, with about 5 minutes to go in the second interval. I paused my watch during the stops. Perhaps it's cheating to have a complete stop and rest in the middle of a threshold interval, but I'd never make it home if I just made turns to avoid crossing streets.

I know what you mean about the stopping, and wondering what effect it has on the workout. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the effect is minimal, especially in relation to the benefit of the workout as a whole.

Nice workout Carolyn. We did run about the same time today, with similar temps. The only glaring difference is that your average pace was quite a bit faster than mine. But that's how it usually is. You're one strong runner.

I wonder if Shaggy will one day take up running because of your influence.

JD, I was faster only because I didn't run as far. I have no doubt you will beat my marathon time at TOU. And I'm not going to jump into that fastest mile thing you've got going with auntieem.

Nice workout. Streets make any workout tough unless you can avoid stoplights. So I think you did the best you could with what you were given. Nice job.

My opinion is that it doesn't take more away than the workout gives you. You did a GREAT workout and had some amazing paces. I'm wondering if I'll even make it through TOU -let alone PR! YOU are an amazing and dedicated runner, keep it up!

Hi Carolyn, awesome training!

Looks like it was a good run. I like reading about the workouts you do--is this still from the book you were using? (I'm too lazy to think about the title right now)

A nice strong run at some good paces.

Tracy,

I'm doing the level 2 half-marathon training plan (with some modification) from Run Faster, by Brad Hudson.

I hate street lights! Unfortunately all the good running is across the main road. If I run on my side of the road a lot of it is industrial. If I cross the street it is farms. I live in a weird town!
