Fartlek Run. 8 miles easy w/ 8 x 40 sec. @ 10K-3K pace. Average pace: 9:07. Run followed by Shred level 1.

58°, 55% humidity, wind 3 S.

Just another early morning run in the dark. I ran my 8-mile County Line Road loop. I waited until after the 5th mile to start the fartlek portion. I programmed the workout into my Garmin this time, because I was afraid I would lose count otherwise.

At one point there was a bicyclist ahead of me who had stopped to fiddle with his bike. Just as I got to where he was, I started one of my fast intervals and he started riding his bike. He didn't get going very fast right away and I was actually running even with him for about 10 seconds. That was kind of cool.

I probably ran the intervals faster than I should have, but I was running them by feel, not looking at the watch because the "real-time" pace on the watch isn't that accurate, plus it's hard to see the watch in the dark and I didn't want to keep turning on the back light. In any case, my pace on the 40-second intervals was 6:56, 6:46, 6:52, 7:27, 7:14, 6:35, 6:41, 6:59.

Carolyn,

When you do your intervals, how long do you have for recovery before you start the next 40 seconds?

When I run tempo runs (1 mile fast, 1/2 mile recovery), I set my garmin to beep at me when I'm not keeping the "fast" goal time. Then it just beeps forever at me when I'm running recovery. Is there a way to program it so I can have it keep me at one pace for 1 mile, then another pace for 1/2 a mile, then back to the first pace?

Like you, I can't see what my pace is on my watch when it's dark outside. Hopefully my headlamp I bought this week-end will come in handy tomorrow morning. I'm excited to use it & give it a try. Thanks for the great idea!

QP, my workout plan doesn't specify how long to recover between 40 second intervals for this particular workout. I did a minute and a half today. A minute seems too short and two minutes seemed too long.

I turned off the pace alerts on my Garmin because they were driving me nuts. However, you can set up different pace zones and then you can create a workout and specify a different pace zone for each part of the workout. Then I think it will beep at you if you're out of the zone for that part of the workout. But since you can have different zones for different parts of the workout, it should say you're going too slow on the easy parts, for example, even though you're not going as fast as on the fast parts. You can also specify no target for a specific part of the workout, such as the easy running.

I've used the workout feature to program in workouts, but I haven't used the pace zones. I always specify no target. So I might be a little off in my description of how it works, but that is my understanding of how it works.

I hope that helps.

I'm going to have to play with my garmin a bit more and see how to make it keep me at a certain pace. I like that....The right now pace drives me nuts! It is so inaccurate!

Carolyn,

Thank you for letting me know what my garmin can do. My husband and I sat down and fiddled around with the computer program for a while, and I think I actually got the program set up for my tempo run tomorrow! I just need to pay attention and make sure I know if it's beeping at me to speed up or slow down.

Carolyn, I'm so excited for my run tomorrow...new headlamp and garmin zones all set. Thank you for making it easier to get up at 4:30! I'll be thinking of you on my run :-)

QP,

Well then I'll be thinking of you when I get up at 4:30, even though you'll be long done by then because it will be 6:30 for you! I just hope you're in bed by now.

You are a very exemplary runner, getting up early, running in the dark, running your easy runs at an easy pace, but when you need to go faster you can turn it on!
