The weather was great for running this morning. I prefer it just a bit warmer, but this was fine. I wish I had weather like this all winter. But mostly I wish I could have weather like this tomorrow. However, this is what the forecast says now:  "Denver could be waking up to 2 to 5 inches of snow by Saturday morning, with 5-10 inches possible in the foothills." I think the location of tomorrow's race qualifies as the foothills. If there's that much snow, we won't be able to see the trail. If there's that much snow, I hope they cancel or postpone the race.

In other news, my left knee has been bothering me just a little intermittently. Sometimes I'll be walking along and it will suddenly hyperextend or something and hurt for a few minutes. I've also noticed it hurting just a bit when I've run the last couple of days. This morning I remarked to myself at the end of my run, that it hadn't hurt at all during the run. But then as soon as I stopped, it started hurting. I don't think it's ITB. It's not on the side of my knee. It's more the front, lower part of the knee cap.

Between the snow and my tricky knee, maybe I should skip the race tomorrow even if they don't cancel it. I guess I'll wait and see whether the snow develops and how my knee feels the rest of today.

I did go to the play up at my husband's high school last night. They did "The Diary of Anne Frank." It was opening night. They had some technical difficulties. They had some difficulties in general. My oldest son wants me to go see "Pride and Prejudice" at his high school tonight. It also opened last night. I don't really want to go out again tonight, but it might be interesting to compare the two high schools. I have a feeling that I know which one would win.

Ah, the glories of the high school play...

How long is the race tomorrow? I would wait and see, like you're planning. I hope you guys don't get that much (or any) snow. I can't believe it's already winter. Today is midquarter of the second quarter. It seems like this semester has flown by!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 09:52:04 from 24.8.167.243

Tomorrow's race is a half-marathon.

From The Quiet Pirate on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 10:45:09 from 24.199.205.252

5-10 inches of snow? That is not cool.

There's always the possibility the weather will hold a little, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Sorry that your knee is bothering you. I'd hate to have to make it worse at the race, but I know you've trained and looked forward to it.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you enjoy and have a great time. Running should be fun.

Good luck!

You will be getting the storm that just passed through here. It wasn't nearly as bad as the meteorologists thought it would be. Maybe it will be the same for you.

Sounds a little like runner's knee. If you have a sample of KT Tape you can do a quick tape job for tomorrow and then lay off it for a few days to let it heal.

From Snoqualmie on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 11:10:25 from 24.18.192.33

Best wishes on your race, and I do hope it gets cancelled if there is a lot of snow.

From Nevels on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 11:18:40 from 131.204.15.93

Good luck tomorrow, and even if your knee is bothering you too much to really push, it should at least be an enjoyable group training run; those runs in rough weather make for the best stories...

From Metcalf Running on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 13:28:56 from 207.225.192.66

Good luck tomorrow... we are supposed to have snow also. I hope you knee gets feeling better.

From RAD on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 14:11:36 from 76.27.12.70

I'm with Jun, I think it's probably runner's knee as well. You could look it up and see if it fits.

Nice work on the run, I think you're smart to wait and see on the race. I'd mentally prepare to do it tomorrow, then get up in the morning and make your decision then. Unless the knee is really bothersome, then it might not be worth it!

From The Quiet Pirate on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 15:16:13 from 24.199.205.252

I am not any sort of physician, but I have had runner's knee problems, and using the under-the-knee strap is like using a magic bandaid. It's helped me run w/o any pain in my knee.

The KT tape sounds like it can provide the same kind of relief.

Hope something works for you. The uphills probably won't bother your knee, but downhills are hard on my runner's knee. You may want to be prepared with something just in case.

Good luck tomorrow. Your knee issue sounds like the same thing I've been dealing with for the last couple of months. Some days it's worse than others. Always runnable though, just not fun or confidence inducing. Also, I should mention that after several weeks of lower miles (40-45 MPW) the pain seems to be pretty much gone. I say pretty much because sometimes at night it will flare up a little in certain positions. But no pain while running lately.

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 17:28:59 from 71.219.97.167

TAKE CARE OF YOUR KNEE!!!! I am praying for lots of snow so that you do not have to make the decision! Then, you can do the race later when you feel better!

From Bonnie on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 18:32:29 from 128.196.228.134

Good luck tomorrow Carolyn!

I will keep my fingers crossed for the knee thing ... it could be as simple as tight quads, do you stretch at all?

Stay warm!

From Nan Kennard on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 18:36:56 from 174.51.250.151

I've never experienced a race being cancelled in all my racing years. One time I was at the USA track and field Championships and the meet was postponed an hour because they thought the official who got slammed in the head with a shot put needed a little attention. For like 20 minutes he just lay on the ground and the announcer didn't say anything. We thought he was dead. Then when they finally lifted him on to a stretcher, he moved his arm to re-assure us that he was at least alive. I'm sure that CAT scan didn't look good though. Anyway, my point is that most race directors don't postpone of cancel races unless its life or death. If your knee is bad, cancelling or postponing YOUR race is something to consider though. Its already snowing here in Westminster. I hope it doesn't keep up at this rate all night!

From Bonnie on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 19:19:53 from 128.196.228.134

Nan, that reminds me of when I was volunteering at a track meet. I was measuring the long jump, it started raining (like really really hard) and one of the athletes said, "are you going to cancel the meet?" My response was "what? you are a track and field athlete, we don't cancel meets, what do you think this is a baseball game?"

I agree with you about the self-cancelling, running in snow on a bum knee is not a good thing.

From Will on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 20:14:31 from 76.247.166.152

Good luck tomorrow! Hope the knee behaves, I know all about that kind of thing :)

From Carolyn in Colorado on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 20:24:40 from 198.241.217.15

Bonnie, I do normal stretch after runs, but I've neglected it for the last week or so. Also, I just had ART done on it and I bought some KT tape. The knee is really not bad, like a .5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

It is snowing here and it's just starting to stick to the grass, but not to the roads yet.
