Threshold Run - 2 miles easy, 6 miles @ half-marathon pace, 2 miles easy. Average pace: 8:44.

35° F at start, dropping to 33° F by the finish, 90% humidity, wind 7 N, light drizzle/mist.

I'm cold. I'd like to jump in a hot shower, but my sons have been showering, so now I've got to wait for some hot water.

It's been a long time since I've run 10 miles on a week day. I can only fit in 8 miles if I'm going to make it home in time to drive to seminary, so today I made the boy walk to seminary. In the cold and the wet and the dark. Poor boy. I assume he made it. He was gone when I got home.

According to the McMillan calculator, and based off of my Ogden marathon time, my half-marathon pace is 8:09. I've yet to actual run a half marathon at that pace. My splits this morning were 9:56, 9:56, 8:29, 8:20, 8:24, 8:02, 7:57, 7:54, 9:06, 9:18. This particular route is mostly uphill for the first half and mostly downhill for the second half, and you can see that in my splits. If you average together the splits for the 6 tempo miles, it comes out to 8:11, so that's pretty close to my half-marathon pace.

It was a cold, wet run, and I felt like I was running blind much of the time because my glasses were very wet and sometimes fogged up, and my headlamp wasn't working very well. I really couldn't see where I was going.

Yesterday on my way to work, I stopped and took some pictures of the hill where I do hill repetitions. It's longer, but not as steep as my hill sprint hill. When I took this first picture, I was standing at about the spot where I start my hill repetitions. I've drawn an arrow to the sign I try to reach, but I don't think you can see the sign very well.

Here's another picture that I took when I was part way up the hill. Again I've pointed out the sign that I try to reach when I run up this hill.

It occurred to me when I was taking the pictures yesterday that if I really want a challenge, I should try running up that grassy hill that's on the right side of the street.

Carolyn,

That hill looks like it's forever long. It's hard to even see the yellow sign from the bottom. What a workout!

Your half marathon pace was great today.

Sorry it's so cold. I wish someone would invent something to keep glasses dry and fog-free on early morning runs. Hats only do so much.

Will you rest tomorrow in prep for the trail run, or will you still run?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 10:19:40 from 24.8.167.243

I'll do an easy 6 tomorrow. And I get to sleep in a little because the kids don't have school. I'm training through this race with the exception of skipping the shred.

Nice run, and way to hit those fast miles...that is always tougher on a varied course than a flat track!

I agree with QP - glasses and rain don't mix, sorry!

Thanks for the pics, you always hear about other people's runs, but if you're like me I still picture the hills I run up. It's nice to have a picture to go with you running it now!

You are definitely going into the race with the right mentality. I think that you'll still do well, and have a lot of fun at the same time.

Really nice threshold miles, Carolyn! Are you trying a 1/2 soon to try out your new pace? That's really fast.

When you mentioned 1/2 M pace, I thought again of my splits from Sunday's fiasco. I went back and added up my first 13. I beat my PR on the 1/2 of the marathon! That's too fast, so I will definitely try to go slower this Sunday. Maybe shoot for 1:55 at the halfway point. I think that's about right.

nice running today. love the pics of the hill. that's a long hill!

I'm running a trail half-marathon on November 14. I won't be surprised if it's snowy, plus it will be a tough course with lots of elevation change and technical trails, so all pace expectations might be out the window.

From Bonnie on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 12:10:36 from 75.164.101.152

Good run today! There is some sort of spray that you can use to help with the fogging of glasses ... I don't know if it actually works. Maybe we need to make you some little "glass wipers" -- that would be seriously cool.

I like the grassy hill ... my hill is about that steep, but much longer (at least 3/4 of a mile from the bottom to top - of course I can't really tell how long the grassy hills from the picture, but I would guess it is less than 100 meters? I used to go to the local golf course to run hill repeats ... they had some awesome grassy hills there. I like my little dirt hill better than road/ashpalt (and I have never done these on concrete) but it is hard when the footing has rocks and sand in the steepest part. I LOVE doing these on grass!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 14:18:56 from 198.241.174.15

Yes, the grassy hill is definitely less than 100 meters. There's a fence at the top of the hill that is the perimeter of a really swanky neighborhood.

I pass a golf course on most of my runs. I should investigate it sometime and see if there are any good hills.

Nice mileage today and great splits on your tempo run. You pretty much nailed HMP.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 18:01:09 from 24.8.167.243

It's snowing.

Lucky you. :-)

From april27 on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 21:45:51 from 99.188.251.180

That hill looks long!!!!

So do you just go up and down the hill over and over? Or do you have several hills in mind? Just wondering b/c I think it is time to add that to my running.

OH and if you find out a way to keep glasses from fogging--I'm in the need to know!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 22:50:49 from 198.241.217.15

I go up and down the same hill over and over. Run up fast, turn around and jog back down, turn around and run up fast, turn around and jog back down, rinse and repeat.

From Mark on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 11:22:56 from 24.129.132.74

Great pictures! You are lucky to have ready access to hills (hopefully you have some flat areas when you need them).

That sure is a lot of miles on those Adrenalines, I'd be paranoid with that many miles and start imagining injuries even if I was perfectly fine with the shoes :)

From Carolyn in Colorado on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 11:45:28 from 24.8.167.243

I'm afraid I have a shortage of flat places, Mark. That's why I've started heading to the track occasionally.

I do have a lot of miles on those Adrenalines, but they're doing okay so far. I've been meaning to get out and buy some new shoes, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Actually, I did stop in at the local running store the other day, but they didn't have what I'm looking for, so I've got to drive farther now.
