Threshold Run. 2 miles easy, 2 x 15 min. @ half-marathon pace/10K pace, w/2-min. active recovery, 2 miles easy. Average pace: 8:44.

52°F, 77% humidity, wind 6 S.

I think the intent of this workout is to run the first 15 min. interval at half-marathon pace and the second 15 min. interval at 10K pace. That didn't quite work out for me this morning. The first interval was mostly downhill with the wind at my back and it was too easy. I had to keep slowing myself down. I ran that interval at 8:08 pace. I turned a corner right as I started the 2nd interval and ran that interval mostly uphill and into the wind. Where I had had to slow myself down on the first interval, I had a hard time keeping the pace on this interval. Also, I only had a 2 minute rest in between intervals, whereas last time I did this workout I had a 5 min. rest. So I didn't hit the 7:45 I was shooting for on the second interval. Instead, I ran 8:04 pace, just barely faster than the first interval. In any case, I'm glad that workout is over.

I'm going to the Colorado Symphony with my friend Carly tonight. It will be fun but it will mean that I won't get to bed early. I have not been able to get to bed early all week.

Sometimes I read your posts like I used to read through geometry math questions in high school. I read the first sentence and the last sentence and guess on the answer.

Awesome workout. You are a champ.

Those workouts, with proscribed interval paces, are so hard on uneven surfaces. I know when we do stuff like that on the trails, it never seems to work out quite right. I would almost rather suffer the boredom of the track and get the pace right! Good job, though, your paces sound so fast!

Great workout. Good job dealing with unexpected circumstances. Enjoy the symphony!!

The effect of great music will more than compensate for any lack of sleep you experience.

I think that as long as the effort is the same you are getting the right workout in. In studying paces/breakdown for TOU Saturday, that is what I've seen repeated over and over again - keep the EFFORT the same. Uphills and wind will keep you from keeping the right pace and we can't really control that. Plus, hills are just speed work in disguise!

You are doing great and hitting some awesome paces! Good luck on the sleep, just take a big long nap Saturday and Sunday!

Enjoy the symphony! You are a speedster--great job doing intervals on hills and in the wind!

All of these workouts are great, but it really is hard to hit a certain pace on uneven terrain! if you take the hill and wind into consideration, I am sure you were right on target.

What program are you following?

Kelli, I'm doing the half-marathon level 2 training plan from the book Run Faster by Brad Hudson. I used the level 2 marathon plan from the same book when I trained for the Ogden marathon.

This training plan will take me through mid-November, and then I think I'll just build mileage until it's time for a marathon plan for a Spring marathon.
