Tempo Run. Average pace: 8:34.

I drove up to Westminster early this morning to run with Nan. I've heard that if you want to become a faster runner, you should run with someone who's faster than you. So that's what I did today. Nan is A LOT faster than me. According to my training plan, and because I did a hard workout yesterday, I was supposed to do an easy run today. However, I knew that if I tried to do an easy run with Nan, I would run it too fast and it wouldn't really be easy. So I decided just to do tomorrow's tempo run instead, and then I'll run easy tomorrow and on Friday.

We did a warm up for the first two miles, though they were a little faster than I usually run my warm up. Splits were 8:56 and 8:42. Then we did 7 miles near my half-marathon pace. Splits were 8:16, 8:17, 8:07, 8:13, 8:20, 8:19, and 8:05. I was pretty beat by that point, so we slowed down for the rest of the run. Splits were 8:58, and 9:27, and then the last half mile at 9:47 pace. We were pretty wet and muddy by the time we finished. Nan had had a nice recovery run and I had had a hard workout.

It was really fun to run with Nan and to get to know her a little bit and to meet her cute family. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Nan for letting me come.

What a workout! Those times are really fast for such a long run. It looks like your weather cooled off again. What a tough run in the rain & wet snow.

It's great you had someone to run with and challenge you.

Two hard workouts in a row call for a treat...I think I'll eat a sugar covered donut in your honor!

What a fun way to work out when you have a little extra time! I'm sure Nan appreciated the company as well.

You did a great job on those paces, tempo runs a day after a hard workout isn't easy and you hit it well!!

I always like running with people faster than me to push me a little out of my comfort zone in training. If you do it often enough, you might surprise yourself at your next race...

Great workout!

Wow nice run!

Hey, btw, I've been trying to remember the song that (I assume) your new blog title refers to. It just came to me; is it the Carole King song? You've been doing so awesome that the lyrics didn't seem to fit... Don't mean to pry but are you feeling like you've got rebuilding to do?

From Jon on Wed, Oct 21, 2009 at 20:25:44 from 75.169.136.50

That's a good plan- it's what I do with Paul, too. His medium days are my hard days, that's for sure.

The Carpenter's did a version of that song also. Or was it Captain and Tenile?

I agree it's nice to run with someone faster sometimes. In my case that would be whenever I run with anyone else.

Sno, you're not prying. I'm not rebuilding in the sense of recovering from injury or something like that. It's just that instead of doing a Fall marathon, I backed off the mileage a bit and did a half marathon training plan, and so once the half marathon is over, I'm going to work on building up mileage and work towards my goal of running 3:30 at the Newport Marathon next June, which is a long ways away. So it's going to take some time.

And it's the Carole King version of the song I'm referring to.
