Painfully slow run. Average pace 9:54. Shred level 2.

5:00 am, 28°F, 94% humidity, wind 5 WNW, steadily falling light snow, 1-2" of snow on the ground.

My husband and I both got up at 4:30 this morning and I asked him to check the school district website to see if there was a delayed start or a snow day. He never said anything about it, so I assumed that he checked and that there was no closure. I looked out the window and the snow didn't look to deep and I considered taking the Yaktrax off my shoes (I had put them on last night). So I got dressed and headed out the door.

It was unpleasant when I was going either North or West because the wind made it feel like the snow hitting my face was little pins pricking me in the face. The Yaktrax probably turned out to be a good thing because the snow was deeper than I thought (and got deeper over the course of the run), but they were kind of annoying because they kept developing big clumps of snow under my heels. I would get a new clump about every 10 steps or so. Most of the time I could knock them off by stamping my foot down, but I few times I had to stop and pull the snow off with my hand. I guess that contributed to my slow pace a little bit.

When I was almost finished with my run I got a text message from my son asking me if it was a snow day. I called him back and told him that I didn't know and that he should check the district website. When I got home, he reported that it was indeed a snow day. I haven't been able to get ahold of my husband to find out if he checked the website earlier this morning, so I don't know whether they called the snow day while I was out running, or if my husband didn't check. In any case, if I had known it was a snow day, I might have gone back to bed and run a little later. Oh well. At least it's done now.

I'm a little worried about tomorrow's tempo run. The snow will be even deeper tomorrow. I wonder if it would be a bad idea for me to go do it on the treadmill, since I haven't run on a treadmill for nearly a year. The other problem is that I have to drive to get to the treadmill, which is no fun in the snow and takes extra time. The time won't be a problem if the schools have another snow day tomorrow, which I think is likely.

In other news, I've got a stiff neck. It was hurting yesterday, and then was really stiff when I got up this morning. The running loosened it up a bit, but it still hurts. I think it was caused by the sewing I did on Monday night, leaning over the table and the sewing machine while I was stressed out and tense.

This is the view out my back window just after noon today. Check out the height of the pile of snow on the chair.

Looks like you are getting a worse winter storm then here. It's cold but the snow has not stuck... just in the mountains. None here in the valley. I really hope it stays that way for a bit longer. I have never run with Yaktraxs, and I'm wondering after reading about your run if the screw shoe method would be better. I'm sure I will have to experiment soon.

Way to get out and get it done when it's not easy conditions. I can't remember the last time my kids had a snow day... it's been years.

Nice job on your run this morning. Your determination is inspiring. I can't wait to get back out there again, full time.

As for your neck, it is amazing how the littlest things can throw it out. Sewing will definitely do it. I have to do some sewing tonight too and am planning on a sore neck in the morning.

Holy cow! Snow day in October? Is this usual?

Good run--I'm impressed, even though you say you felt slow.

Take care of that stiff neck. That's how my shoulder problems developed, by leaning over and being stressed.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 11:38:47 from 24.8.167.243

It is a little early in the year for a snow day. Usually they fail to call a snow day when there should be one and then they call a snow day the next day when it's not really needed, but I think they got it right this time.

How do I take care of my stiff neck? I'm not sure what to do about it.

And even though I ditched the fairy costume, I've still got to do a little sewing tonight. I've got to make a pointy hat for Thing 2, aka Shaggy.

Sounds like you should come to the Chiropractor with me this morning. My neck has been stiff lately too which is why I scheduled the Chiropractor. I put a heat pad on it last night and that seemed to help. Maybe you can get your husband or kids to massage it for you?

I would postpone the Tempo run until Friday or Saturday if I were you. Its not very effective to attempt running tempo in this deep of snow. I guess you could do it on the TM but I know you're not a big fan of TM running. I don't think having not run on a TM in a year would cause you injury though; you could also do it on an indoor track. I may do some TM running later today and maybe some tomorrow too. Stay warm!

That thumping sound is me hitting myself in the head -- all this time I've been putting on my Yaktrax after the shoe is on my foot. Trying to balance and pull at the same time, hopping around... You are brilliant.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 12:12:41 from 198.241.217.15

I don't think it's ever easy putting Yaktrax on, Snoqualmie. As I was putting them on the shoes last night, I wondered if it would be easier if I put the shoes on. I just did it last night to save myself time in the morning.

From RAD on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 13:54:14 from 76.27.12.70

wow, I'm so impressed you got up and out this morning in the cold and snow. Buses and schools can't operate, but Carolyn can!! I think I may invest in some of those 'yaktrax' this year. Sometimes the packed snow mid-winter can get bad!

I'd go with the TM, I think it would be worth it, or like Nan said switch it with Friday's run if Saturday's isn't too bad.

In exchange for the hat, I would request a massage! :)

Nice eight miler!

Cool pic, though I don't care for the subject matter. :-)

i could have used my yaktrax today. it was slick out there. great job getting in the miles in the cold, early hours of the morning.

i like that picture you posted. i am guessing that you came home and sat in the chair and ate a popsicle in your swimming suit to cool off. just a guess.

From Nan Kennard on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 17:19:01 from 174.51.250.151

That is a good snow pic. I just posted mine at www.kennardhome.com

This is a crazy storm! I hope it melts by Saturday.

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 17:51:46 from 65.191.134.20

Holy Snow Pile Carolyn! You are a trooper going out and stomping the snow off every 10 feet for over 8 miles.

My hat is off to you for your dedication. Do you get to work from home when your kids have snow days at school?

I hope your neck gets better. Heating pads and massages are great. I hope your hat sewing goes well.

Good luck on your run tomorrow- where ever you decide to do it.

From Tracy on Wed, Oct 28, 2009 at 19:40:19 from 173.24.32.153

Carolyn, I found that actively working on keeping my shoulders from creeping up (and not just while running) helped a little. Also, making sure that when I was sitting in a chair to use the backrest and keep my back straight--as much as I could. And massage is always good.

All I say to your picture is YUCK!
