No run today.

I felt fine on my run on Saturday and even afterwards for most of the day. In fact, as you may recall, I was complaining about having an easy week this week. What fools we mortals be.

On Saturday evening I developed a pain in the outside of my right leg a few inches above my ankle. It hurts when I put weight on it, not terrible pain, but enough to make me limp. It's only gotten worse since then. I'm worried about it.

Sorry to hear about the pain. Good idea to rest today. I'd take some Ibuprofen and give it some massage if you can. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear about your injury--hopefully with some rest, ibuprofen and care, pain will subside enough.

Are you concerned enough to visit a doctor?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 10:50:36

My husband thinks I should go to the doctor, but he's typically more anxious to see a doctor than I am. My worry at this point is that it could be a stress fracture and I'm hoping beyond hope that it isn't. But if it is, my understanding is that it won't show up on an x-ray, at least not yet. I'll wait a few days or a week and if it's still bothering me, then I'll go to the doctor. I'm hoping that it's something minor that a few days of rest will heal. If it's a stress fracture, that will probably mean no Canyonlands half and no Ogden marathon for me. But I shouldn't jump to that conclusion yet.

I'm sorry to hear you are hurting... Take it easy, ice, rest and meds. I hope it helps.

From Bonnie on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 18:10:53

I will be hoping for the best ... Personally, I don't think it sounds like a stress-fracture (weird place to get one) -- but rather it sounds more like a tendon insertion point problem (myofacial work by a sports massage therapist or ART specialist could tell for sure) - if it is (and let's hope it is) then it will hurt super bad when they work on it, but they can fix it in one treatment. There are a few practioners - usually chiropractors - in your area (http://www.activerelease.com/providerSearch.asp?searchType=city&intCountryId=2&intStateId=6&strCity=Denver). They are usually pretty good about telling you when they suspect it is not muscular or if they suspect bone involvement.

Good luck Carolyn!

From JD on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 18:21:34

You're smart to take today off. I agree with Bonnie that it would be an odd location for a stress fracture. I'll be sending positive vibes your way!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 18:34:02

Thanks Bonnie and JD. You're making me feel more optimistic.

As I think about it, about 2-3 miles into my run on Saturday I stepped on the edge of a small hole in the ground with my right foot and my ankle rolled out. I didn't really hurt and I kept going. But it's the outside of my lower right leg. Do you think the ankle roll (and resulting sideways extension of the right leg) could have caused this even though I didn't feel any pain until hours later?

From Bonnie on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 18:37:51

most definately.

Injuries stink! I hope you're up and running very soon.
