Hard Run. 2 miles easy, 4 miles @ maximum effort, 2 miles easy. Average pace: 8:34.

41° to start and 39° by the end, 34% humidity, mostly clear skies, wind 10 mph average, gusting to 21 mph, WNW.

My workout plan calls this a time trial for some reason, but I prefer to call it a hard run. Rather than doing one of my two 8-mile loops, I decided to run my 4-mile loop twice this morning. The wind was howling and I decided that I wanted to stay closer to home and avoid open areas. The weather wasn't nearly as bad as it was for you Utah folks yesterday morning. But it wasn't pleasant either. I expect that it will be worse tomorrow.

I had to run across the grass a couple of times to avoid sprinklers this morning. But there was one sprinkler that I didn't see and it whapped me right across the chest. I expect that the sprinklers will get turned off for the season pretty soon. These sprinklers that I ran into where on a large grassy area along a main street, so they belong to the city (though it's technically not a city), not to an individual.

Splits today were 9:49, 9:23, 7:34, 7:32, 7:48, 7:38, 9:32, 9:10.

**Later Addition**

I don't know if I should mention this, but my oldest son told me about it last night and then I got confirmation about it via an email from the school this morning, but a boy on the cross country team from my sons' high school was running the Highline Canal Trail with some parents and teachers yesterday and collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. I don't know any more details than that.

40 degrees with wind and a wet shirt? Ooohhhhh bbbrrrrrr. Your times are good for all of your miles, but the tempo miles are really great..keeping up a 7:40 over 4 miles rocks.

We had some farmer nearby fertilize his fields recently, and there's been a manure stench lingering in our 'hood for the last few days. It's not as fun as running through sprinklers on a chilly autumn morning, but it sure does stink!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Oct 01, 2009 at 09:25:37 from 24.8.167.243

I hope the manure stench blows out of there soon. I often smell bacon and donuts on my runs (because I run past IHOP and a donut shop), but not today.

Carolyn, that run took some guts this morning! Very impressive tempo run, especially considering the nasty weather. Hope you have a great day!

OK- do you have a weather station at your house???

Nice run. You are too cool for school :)

From Mark on Thu, Oct 01, 2009 at 11:14:58 from 24.129.132.74

Awesome run! especially through the cold and sprinklers and wind. I think there was also a 5K PR sandwiched someplace in those 4 miles. Way to go!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Oct 01, 2009 at 11:36:16 from 198.241.174.15

Yes Mark, any 3.1 extracted from those 4 miles would be a 5K PR for me. I tend to run better in training than in races for some reason.

Marion, I have a little window thermometer at my house, but mostly I use http://www.wunderground.com. Someone not too far from me has a weather station that has data listed on this website. Most of my weekday runs go around this particular weather station, though I didn't today.

Carolyn, so sorry to hear about the young man at your son's school. So sad that things like this happen.

From jun on Thu, Oct 01, 2009 at 13:20:01 from 66.239.250.209

That is so sad about the young man in your area. That recently happened here in SLC during one of the races. It is really strange and unfortunate.

That sucks! You never know when it's your time to go. I'm glad you mentioned it, we all need a reminder now and then of how fragile life is.

Nice run. Those are great splits on the "time trial".

From RAD on Thu, Oct 01, 2009 at 14:33:21 from 76.27.12.70

wow...GREAT run and interesting story. Especially since it's a familiar run for you! I wish the family all the peace and help they can get.

That poor family :( How terrible.
