I had the feeling as I left the house this morning that I was forgetting something, but it took me a minute or two to realize that the thing I had forgotten was my glasses. They're not essential to my running; I run without them in the winter because my lower face covering causes them to fog up. So I continued on without them. I am more prone to seeing things that aren't there when I don't have my glasses on. This morning I was perlexed for a while by what turned out to be traffic lights reflected in a wet spot on the sidewalk (it was wet from sprinklers).

Boot Camp was cancelled this morning because the recruit was unavailable. It's a good thing, because I've had a freakishly busy morning without it.

In other news, I registered yesterday for a half marathon that I'm planning to run in November. This is the inaugural running of this race. They just posted the course description and it says this: "This is a hilly course that is 95% trail. It is scenic and challenging." Of course the name of the race is the Wildcat Mountain 1/2 Marathon. And it is sponsored by the Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA) and for most of their races the description says that the course is suitable to all skill levels, and then it's a wicked hilly course. So I'm not sure what to think when THEY say it's a challenging course. And I can't go check out the course because 1) The course map makes absolutely no sense to me, and b) Parts of the trail are not open yet (it's a new trail). What have I gotten myself into?

Your trail run 1/2 marathon will be a great adventure. It sounds like some hill training would be good prep.

Will there be snow on the trails in November? I think it will be great fun..and a real workout. I can't wait to hear about how it goes.

Will you do a long run tomorrow?

That sounds like an interesting run. I have always wondered what it would be like to run wearing glasses. I did not know you wore glasses!

You will do great on the race, I am sure! Just go into it with the right attitude---blind (not knowing the course) and looking for a fun race!!! Those have always been my favorite races. I KNOW that I ended up hate the Moab 1/2 because I drove the course before. I think I would have enjoyed it far more had I known nothing! What do you think? Do you like knowing beforehand?

I do lots of hill running. I live in a very hilly area. My average run is about a 1/3 uphill, 1/3 downhill, and 1/3 flat.

There might or might not be snow on the trail in November. We typically get more snow in the Spring than in the Fall, but it is certainly possible, especially in the part of town where this race is happening. It's higher elevation than downtown Denver.

Kelli,

It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference to me whether I know the course before hand or not. The big unknown for me with this race is that it's a trail race and I'm not sure how technical it will be. It says it's single track and the little bit of trail running I do is on a big wide well-groomed trail. The HRCA also has a 5 or 10 mile trail race in October. I did the 10 mile race last year. I'll probably do that again as a tune-up for the half marathon.

Also, see my avatar? In that picture I'm wearing my regular glasses with sunglasses that attach via magnets. If you take off the sunglass part, it's just my regular glasses that I wear all the time.

You'll be ready for the race with all the hill practice you're getting.

My daily run course is flat as a pancake. I live in the sandhills, but my neighborhood ended up with all the sand and no hills.

I like to know what a course is all about when I'm aiming for a goal. But most of the time, I enjoy not knowing and just enjoying the journey.

Your stop light in the puddle story is funny. I sometimes see things that aren't there when I'm running in the dark- and I do have my glasses on. I always blame my imagination and lack of sleep. Maybe I'll try running without my glasses and see if it helps :-).

Wow that sounds like a cool race! I think you will be absolutely fine! You already run lots of hills as it is...Will you add more to your routine?

From RAD on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 13:55:34 from 76.27.12.70

Nice run this morning, way to get out and get some miles in. I wear contacts and I've tried running with my glasses occasionally, but I'm not as used to the prescription, so it makes me sick. I'm so blind I would trip over the curb if I didn't have glasses/contacts!

I think the race will be great, just don't go into it looking for a PR (I'm sure you already know that). From what I've been told for 'trail' races you typically add like 1 or more min/mile to your race pace. I think the 10 miler will be a GREAT warm-up! Sorry about bootcamp, but I'm glad you got a little extra time!

That sounds like a very cool race!! I wish I could some run it with you... I'm sure you will do great!

Inaugural races are great. This sounds like a good trail race.

I wear eyeglasses when I run. I forget them sometimes but no biggee, I'm a little near sided and they help a lot on dark mornings, but without them I'm fine too, as long as I don't let my imagination run away from me.

Guess what?! My work computer bit the dust big time around noon. So I had to take the afternoon off. So sad. (Not!)

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 18:05:51 from 71.219.97.42

AHHH, I just thought they were sunglasses!!!

Trail running is tricky, so I can see your point on that.

From RAD on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 20:32:25 from 76.27.12.70

Sorry about the computer, but not sorry you got the afternoon off - I just hope it was paid :)

I'm salaried, so it was paid.
