I've run off and on (more off than on) throughout my adult life. Most recently I started running in May of 2007.

5K PR: Colder Bolder in December 2009 in 22:50.

10k PR: Bolder Boulder in May 2009 in 48:06.13.

1/2 Marathon PR: Canyonlands Half-Marathon in March 2010 in 1:43:20.

Marathon PR: Newport (Oregon) Marathon in June 2010 in 3:42:17.

I have completed two full marathons.

Easy run + 10 x 8 sec. hill sprints. Average pace: 10:43.

Weather: 35°F, 34% humidity, wind 6 NW, partly cloudy with a waning crescent moon.

I drove thing 2 to seminar at 6:00 this morning before my run and while I was driving him I had an intense desire to go back home and go back to bed. But I went back home and ran instead. My legs actually felt better than I thought they would, but I had a general tiredness and so I made sure to stay at an easy pace. None of my mile splits was under 10:00. My pace on the hill sprints ranged from 8:10 to 9:12, with seven out of the ten under 9:00 pace. Since I was a little late on my run I didn't encounter any middle schoolers on my hill. I saw the last of the middle schoolers walking down the hill as I approached it before starting the hill sprints.

I was thinking about treadmill running vs. running outside yesterday. I realized that when I run outside I really have no sense of the passage of time. I wear a watch and so I know what time it is and I know roughly how long the run will take me, but most of the time I'm focusing on distance and don't notice, for example, when I've been out for an hour. When I run on a treadmill, it's all about time, trying to keep going for 30 more minutes or something like that. I find it much more pleasant to focus on distance rather than time.

I agree about the TM. I get on it for 5 minutes and it feels like eternity - but maybe that's just me.

Don't worry about being slow today. That's what hard/easy is for! I am starting to think Hudson's schedules are a little too vigorous, but that might be that we are looking at the printed ones instead of inventing our own. You're actually doing it though! I look at my workouts and pick & choose, served ala Guilt! :)

I try to look at treadmill runs as nothing more than workouts. The treadmill can be tedious and dull. One advantage is it gives my legs a little break from the pounding they get on the roads. IMHO running outdoors is far superior to running on a treadmill. 75% percent of the reason I run is for the experience of being outdoors, that's why I love trail running...can't wait for Winter to be over...

I hear you sister. If I can't watch TV or something to keep my mind off of the TM I basically go insane and never meet my goal.

Because of that I have found that I will run outside in pretty much any conditions. I always find it worth it.

I'm with you on Hudson, Snoqualmie. For example, here's the schedule from the book for this week (I reorder the days a little):

Mon - Easy Run, 4 miles

Tue - Hill Repetitions, 2 miles easy, 6 x 2 min. uphill @ 10K effort w/jog-back recoveries, 2 miles easy

Wed - Progression Run, 10 miles, last 8 miles hard

Thu - Easy Run, 8 miles + 10 x 8-sec. hill sprints

Fri - Threshold Run, 2 miles easy, 5 miles @ half-marathon pace, 2 miles easy

Sat - rest

Sun - Fartlek Run + Progression, 6 miles easy, 5 miles: 1 min. @ 10K pace/1 min. easy, 1 mile easy, 2 miles hard

So in that schedule, which are the hard days and which are the easy days? Monday and Saturday are clearly easy. I think Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday are hard. But are Tuesday and Thursday easy or hard? I think they're somewhere in between with Tuesday leaning more towards hard and Thursday leaning more towards easy. What do you think?

Technically, Thursday should be easy, unless you take them too hard.

Sunday's run is not super easy, but it is not hard either ... you really are only running 1 minute at a hard (10K pace) - the "hard" bits should be slower than 10K pace - you could even write "comfortably hard" in there (which would put you somewhere slower than 1/2 marathon pace and close to marathon pace -- Steady State pace in McMillan speak) and 2 miles shouldn't be too bad at the right pace.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday's are harder and having Tuesday and Wednesday close together does not give you a lot of recovery time. There also isn't a lot of time to recover from Wednesday before your Friday run (which is the hardest run of the week IMO).

The only program I can tolerate well is alternating like this:

I don't consider Hudson's 10 x 8-sec. hill sprints to be hard, but they take time to get used to ... and if you feel they are hard to recover from then either you are doing them too hard or you should skip them (as I think you are getting "more" from the progression and threshold runs -- they are a staple).

To make the schedule work for me, I switch Monday and Saturday, and then shift everything forward a day. So I did Tuesday's hill repetitions on Monday this week, Wednesday's progression run on Tuesday, and Thursday's hill sprints today. I've got Friday's Threshold run tomorrow.

I think for the Sunday (Saturday for me) long run, you're supposed to do 6 miles easy, then alternate between 1 minute at 10K pace and 1 minute easy for however long it takes you to run 5 miles, then do 1 mile easy, then 2 miles hard.

I'm not too worried about the Threshold run tomorrow because McMillan has my half-marathon pace at 9:27 and that's actually not too hard for me. I suspect my true half-marathon pace is faster (we'll see in a month). So if I keep it at 9:27 tomorrow instead of going faster, I should be fine.

Yikes! I switched from PreMed to Public Relations in college so I wouldn't have to do math. If I continue to build my base is this what I have to look forward to? You're scaring me!

Don't worry, edrickt. My watch tracks the pace and the laps and all that stuff for me. I don't have to do the math. I've got a Garmin Forerunner 205, in case you're wondering.
